My invention relates broadly to adjustable gunstocks and more particularly to butt extensions therefor.
The object of the invention is to provide a gunstock with butt end equipment whereby the gun may be adjusted relatively to the shoulder rest, or vice versa, to vary the barrel pitch, or drop, in accordance with individual requirements.
Another object is to provide means of the character and for the purpose above set forth which is simple in construction, may be applied to any gunstock, is inexpensive to manufacture, and by means of which a wide range of adjustments may be readily and accurately effected.
With foregoing and other objects in view, and presently appearing, the invention resides in the combinations of parts and features of construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, set forth in detail in the succeeding description, and 20 defined in the claims appended hereto.

Referring to the drawings by numerals, accord- 50 ing to my invention the stock I of the gun is cut off at the butt end thereof so that the extension will not increase the standard overall length of said stock.
Secured to the butt end of the stock I, as by 55 screws 2, is a metal cap plate 3 conforming in size to that of said butt end and of the same shape, i. e., ovoid, the outer edge of said plate being rabbeted as at 4.
Opposed to the plate 3 is a fixed metal housing section 5 having a back web 6 and a lateral, forwardly extending edge flange l of the same size and shape as the plate 3, the front edge of said flange being fitted into the rabbet 4 and soldered thereto as represented at 8. The Web 6 is provided therein with a central rectangular slot 9 extending lengthwise of the web, a similarly shaped and extending lower slot 10, an upper square slot II, and an internal boss i2 at its upper end, all for a purpose presently seen.
At the rear of the housing section 5 is a similar housing section l3 reversed relative to the housing 5 so that the web It thereof bears against the web 6 and the edge flange 15 thereof extends rearwardly. The web M of housing section I3 is provided therein with a central slot HS similar to and opposed to the slot 9, a lower slot ll opposed to the slot I0, an upper slot i8 opposed to slot II, and an upper internal boss l9. The slots 10 and i6 are merely for lightening the sections. The outer edge of the flange i5 is outwardly bowed at its side, as at IQ, for a purpose presently seen.
The above described housing section mounted on the fixed housing 5 for vertical adjustment thereon as follows. Suitably fixed to the rear face of the web M to extend lengthwise across the slot 15 is an elongated clip having a front longitudinal groove 2i therein, the ends of the clip 20 slidably engaging the sides of the slot ll of housing section 5. An adjusting screw 22 is rotatably fixed in the boss i 2 of the housing section 5 to depend therefrom into said section with its kerf exposed at the top of the section. The screw 22 has threaded thereon a clip engaging plate 23 one edge of which fits into thegroove 2| of clip 20, whereby upon turning of the screw 22 in opposite directions, said plate 23 is fed in opposite directions to correspondingly adjust the housing section 13 vertically on the housing section 5, the clip 20 coacting with slot H to guide the section IS in its vertical movement and prevent turning of the same.
In the rear of the housing section I3 is a shoulder rest section 24 similar in form to the sections 5 and I3, that is to say, having a web 25 and an edge flange 26, the edge flange, in this instance, fitting loosely over the flange I5 of housing section I3 so that the shoulder rest section '24 is adapted to be rocked about a transverse axis relative to the other sections, by means presently I3 is described, to incline the same forwardly and rearwardly. To provide suitable bearings for said section 24 in its rocking movement, the side edges of the flange 26 are forwardly bowed, as at Z'I, and bear against an external front edge bead 28 on the housing section I3. The section 24 is provided with an external rear edge bead 29 for the purpose presently seen.
The means for rocking the shoulder rest section 24 comprises the following. Suitably secured, adjacent its opposite ends, as at 36, to the inner face of the web 25 of said section 24 is a vertically extending cam bar 3! provided adjacent its opposite ends with a pair of forwardly extending, oppositely inclined, upper and lower cam portions 32, and also having a pair of ears 33 extending forwardly from its opposite side edges, centrally of said bar, and pivotally mounted on the flange 15 of section l3 within the same by trunnions 34 disposed in the transverse center of said section I 3, whereby said bar and the shoulder rest section 24 may be rocked about a transverse axis on the section 13. Vertically slidable in the section 13 is a cam bar 35 disposed similarly to cam bar 31, opposite the same, and having adjacent its opposite ends a pair of oppositely inclined, rearwardly extending, upper and lower cam portions 313 opposed to the portions 32 in sliding engagement therewith, the arrangement being such that vertical adjustment of said cam bar 35 in opposite directions will rock the cam bar 3! in opposite directions respectively. A screw 3? mounted in the boss Q8 of the section i3, in the same manner as screw 22, and extending through the upper cam portion 36 of cam bar 35 provides for vertically adjusting said bar. The flange 26 of the shoulder rest section 24. is provided with an upper notch 38 therein for access to said screw 3?. The cam bar 35 is provided with an upper guide lug 39 fitting into the slot [8 of the housing section I? so that said bar is prevented from turning.
The shoulder rest section M is clamped to the sections 5 and E3 in the different positions in which it is rocked, by means of a screw 46 extending centrally through the Web- 25 of said section 24 and threaded into a cleat bar 45 extending transversely across the front face of the back web 6 of the section 5 and having a guide boss 62 slidably fitting in slots 5% and 15 of webs 6 and I l and also in a slot 13 in the cam bar 35, whereby said cleat bar is prevented from turning and keys the sections 5 and it together against relative turning. The cam bar 3| has a slot 44 therein to accommodate the screw 45).
A recoil cap-like pad 45 of rubber is fitted over the shoulder rest section 25 the beforementioned bead 29 serving to frictionaily hold the same on said section.
As will be clear, by turning the screw 22 in opposite directions, the shoulder rest section 324 may be adjusted vertically to suit the individual using the gun, such operation of the screw 22 feeding the clip engaging plate 23 along the same, said plate moving the clip in the slot ll of section 5 and thereby adjusting the adjustable housing section 13 vertically, said section l3 imparting similar adjusting movement to the shoulder rest section 24 through the described connection by means of which said section 24 is mounted on the section 13. If it is desired to vary the angle of the shoulder rest 24, this may be accomplished by turning the screw 37, such turning of said screw adjusting the cam bar 35 vertically. Such vertical adjustment of the cam bar 35 cams the cam bar 3! to rock the latter on the trunnions 34 and thereby rock the shoulder rest on the housing section l3 as will be clear.
The foregoing will, it is believed, sufiice to impart a clear understanding of my invention without further explanation.
Manifestly the invention, as described, is susceptible of modification without departing from the inventive concept and right is herein reserved to such modifications as fall within the scope of the subjoined claims.
What I claim is:
1. An adjustable butt assembly'for a gunstock comprising a housing section adapted to be fixed to the butt end of said stock, a similar housing section vertically adjustable on the fixed housing section, a shoulder rest section pivotally mounted on the vertically adjustable section for rocking movement about a horizontal axis, a set screw extending through the top of the fixed housing and operatively connected to the vertically adjustable housing section for manipulation to adjust the same in opposite directions, respectively, and means in the vertically adjustable section for rocking the shoulder rest section in opposite directions, respectively, including a set screw extending through the top of said vertically adjustable section, and operating connections between the last mentioned set screw and said rest section including coacting cam members one slidable relative to the other under manipulation of said last mentioned set screw.
2. An adjustable butt assembly for a gunstock comprising a housing section adapted to be fixed to the butt end of said stock, a similar housing section vertically adjustable on the fixed housing section, a shoulder rest section pivotally mounted on the vertically adjustable section for rocking movement about a horizontal axis, aset screw extending through the top of the fixed housing and operatively connected to the vertically adjustable housing section for manipulation to adjust the same in opposite directions, respectively, and means in the vertically adjustable section for rocking the shoulder rest section in opposite directions, respectively, including a set screw extending through the top of said vertically adjustable section, and camming means operative under manipulation of said last mentioned set screw.
