Claims. (01. 164 60 1 This inventionrelates to paper slitters and has for its objects:
First, to produce a new and improved paper slitter. Second, to produce such a slitter in. which "the bearing and other working parts, exclusive of the knife, are protected. against the lint and the like which collect-oh machinery of thistypeh facilitate removal of the blades for Third, to produce such. a slitterin iwhich the knives are held resiliently in cooperating position and in which the knives may be separated .for "the purposes of adjustment and sharpeningby an axial movement and in which one of the knives byfa simple "manipulation, be re t -cted from the other knife away from the plane or the paper onjwhich the knives are working to sharpening and the adjustment oi the device. Other objects and advantages pertaining to details and economies oi. construction and operation will appear ironrthe description to follow. ;The invention is jd efined in the claims. A preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. l is a view partly in section of our improved slitter bringing: the knives in cooperating cutting position, taken on line ie-l of Figs; 2 and/1.
Fig. 2 is a detail sectional View taken on line 2 -2 ofFigl.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to that of Fig. l show- .ing the knives separated for the purposes of adjustment. T Fig. 4 is a view of the rear of the. supporting casing taken from. the right of Figs; 1 and 2.
In our improved device are providedthe rotary cutting knives i and Zdisposed to sever a web of paper 3 which is fed thereto. The knife 2 is ,adjustably supportedbymeans of .a support 4 having column 5 slidably supportedin the supporting block 6. The support 4} is provided with cylindrical bore in whiehis'disposed a cylindrical member iiywhich is both slidable and rotatable in the bore 1. The cylindricalmember El carries" the'axie 9 for the knife 2.. The axle is suitably supported in ball bearings ID and H mounted on the cylindrical member and extends axially of the cylindrical member 8 but is eccentrically disposed with respect to the axis of the cylindrical member Band of the bore 1. On the 1 axis is a suitable bladeholder l2 withnut l3 for clamping the blade 2. Theaxle 9 extends from the end M of the bore 1. The end I5 of the bore 1 is closed by a suitable cap [6 held in place by screws l1 andhav-ing aperture l8. A stem 19 is fixed to the cylindricalmember" 8 and extends through the aperture l8. j To the stem 19 is fixed a ring handle ZILwhich may be used for moving the cylindrical member -8 axially of the bore 1 or for rotating it therein. 5 The handle 20 is provided with an aperture 2| to be engaged byl a suitable hook and is pro- .videdwith a pin 22. spring pressed by a spring 23 in a bore 24 in the handle to engage recesses 25, ZEEand 21 in the cap" 16. A compression l0 spring '28 is mounted in the bore 1 and engages the cylindrical member-fl nging it to the left of Fig. 1 to hold the knives I. and 2' in resilient operating engagement. One end of the spring bears against the cap H5. The support land the cylindrical member 8 areconnected by a pin and slot connection indicated at. 29. The pin extends from the support to engage the slot. 3! in the cylindrical member 8. This slot is provided witha portion 32 extending-in a directionaxial of the bore to lock the cyliridricai member against rotation whenthe knivesare in operative engage merit. jand'a portiontii extendingcircumferene tially-and connected with the portion 32 serving u v "to hold the knives out of engagement when the 5 cylindrical member 8 ismoved to the right in Fig.
' 1 isthen rotated tomove the knife 2 upwardly as viewed in i Fi "l I andtheknife 1.
away from the paper In Fig. 1, we show the knives in cutting dengag ementh In Fig. 3; we show the knives separated axially and also with the knife 2 moved. away from the plane of the paper. This is accomplished by pulling on the handleZO to retract the cylindrical member 8 in the bore 1 and by then turning the handle 20 in a counterclockwise direction so that the pin 30 will engage in the portion 33 of the slot 31 to hold the blades in axially; separated position while the eccentric mountingof the axle 9 and the turning of the 0 cylindrical member raise thebl ade 2 to the position shown;
. It-lwillbej apparentthat when the blade 2 has beenmovedto the position shown in Fig. 3, it is possible to easily remove the blade 2 for sharpen- 2 .ingand ityis possiblealso to adjust the blades to the desired relative position before moving the blade 2 downso that itwill meet blade I and then permitting it to move axially. to resilient engagement withthe blade. This device is particularly useful because of the ease of adjustment and becauseit is possible by merely reaching in with a hook to move the blade from the position of Fig. 1 to the position of Fig. 3, and because when the blades are in operating position they are held accumulation of lint whichinterferes resiliently in engagement. It will be apparent that the working parts are well protected against with the operation of slitters in general.
If it is desired, the slot 3| may be'provided with an extension 34 by means of which theblade 2 maybe held away from the blade I without ,materia'lly raising the blade away from the plane of the paper to be out.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to'secure by Letters Patent is: j i v 1.
