Description

Jan. 2, 1940. I -H. E. HERR SPINNING RING AND TRAVELER THEREFOR 7 Filed Aug. 24, 1938' Patented Jan. 2,1940
PATENT. OFFICE SPINNING RING AND TRAVELER THEREFOR Harvey E. Herr, Buffalo, N. Y., assiguor to Herr Manufacturing Company, Inc., Buffalo, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application August 24,
7 Claims.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the spinning rings and travelleiil's employed in connection with spinning ma- 0 es.
It has for its chief object to provide a ring and' traveler of this character which are designed to maintain an even and constant thread tension and wherein a downward and outward thrust or pressure of the traveler against the ring is provided to counteract any tendency of the thread to exert an upward pull on the traveler during the spinning operation and wherein the ring is provided with simple and eifective means for lubri eating the traveler.
Other features of the invention reside in. the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure lis a side elevation of the spinning ring and traveler embodying my invention, the sanie being shown in operative association with the traverse bar and bobbin. Figure 2 is an enlarged top plan view of the ring and traveler. Figure 3 is an enlarged cross section taken on line is a supporting member or holder l2 of substantially ring-like form and which is alined with an opening-13 formed in the bar. Applied to this holder is the spinning or traverse ring it upon which the traveler I5 is adapted to be revolved.
Rising from the outer side 'of the holder body i2 is an annular flange 16 whose top edge ll forms a seat or shoulderupon which the spinning ring rests, this holder also having a'plurality of upstanding radial lugs l8 rising above the flange l6 and against which the outer side of the ring is adapted to bear to retain'it-in its proper axial position in the holder. The spinning ring it is detachably held in a-level position within the holder by means of a clamping member which may be in the form of a split ring l9 detachably fitted in notches 28 for-med in the holderlugs I8 and in bearing contact with the top side 1938, SerlalNo. 226,499
of the adjoining portion of the ring, as shown in Figure 3. The lower or base portion of the 'ring it is preferably cl'iannel-shaped incross section to provide an outer or seatingflan'ge '2! and an inner or traveler-engaging flange 22, the latter having its lower edge spaced above thebase portion of the holder l2.
The upper or main bearing portion of the ring it on which the traveler runs; is-prefe'rably of the cross-section shown in Figure 3,- wherein a i lower bearing face 23 and an adjoining upper bearing face 24 are provided-the former being flared downwardly and outwardly or'frustowonical in shape and intersecting the contiguous, substantially upright inner bearing face of itheringv flange 22. The upper bearing face 24 is flared upwardly and outwardly from its point of inter section with the companion-"lower'bearing face 23 and terminates attl e upper rim-wall of the ring. Formed in the lower bearing face 23 of'the 20 ring is an annular lubricant-receiving groove or channel 25 having a charging port 26 leading thereto from the exterior of the ring. Removably seated. in this channel is a wick 21 preferably made of coiled wire which'by capillary action distributes the lubricant'about the ringto eflectually lubricate the traveler during operation. I The traveler II is 'made from a single pieceof wire and shaped in the manner shown'in Figure 3, including an upper "inclined bearing'leg go 28 which bears against the upper inclinedjbearing face 24, a downwardly and'outwardly inclined bearing leg 29 which bears against the companion lower bearing face 23 and a pendant leg '30 which is adapted to engage the inner face of the channel-flange 22. The upper bearing leg 28 terminates in a hook-like portion 3| which loosely embraces the top rim of the ring while the pend ant traveler-leg terminates in a like hook-like portion 32 which flts freely about the ring-flange 22 and extends into the adjoining channel-way of the ring. At the junction of the bearing legs 28, 29 there is provided a thread-engaging loop 33 which spans the inner portion of the upper-bearing face 24.
It will be noted that the ring-bearing faces 23, 24 are at substantially right angles to each other as are the traveler legs 28, 2g and that the threadengaging loop 33 is at the lowest point of the bearing leg 28, which-arrangement effectually 5 eliminates the buzzing sound incident to the spinning of the threads. During the normal runnin operation of the traveler, its contact with the ring is along the under or "obliquebearing "face '28, the bearing legs 28 and 3! together with the end- 5 loops ii, I! permitting a limited sliding in and out movement of the contacting bearing leg 29 on the companion ring-bearing face 23. The latter is effectually lubricated by the coiled wick 21 and in this connection the opening in the coil serves as a conduit or manifold to uniformlydistribute the gilbncant about the entire bearing face of the In the-modified form of the ring shown in Figure 4, the same is made of two pieces consisting of an outer section 34 and a concentrically-disposed inner section II to provide a channeled baseportion and a rim-like portion having bearing faces similar to those in the previously described construction. The opposing contiguous faces of the upper portions of these ring-sections are shaped to provide a lubricant-channel 38 in which a wick 31 may be fltted.
I claim as my invention:
1. A device of the character described, comprising a spinning ring for travelers having a downwardlympening channeled base portion providing an outer supporting flange and an inner traveler-engaging flange-having an inner, substantially upright bearing face thereon, and having an upper portion including bearing faces' disposed at substantially right angles to each other to provide an upper outwardly-inclined bearing face and a lower downwardly and outwardly inclined bearing face intersecting the upper end of the inner face of said traveler-engaging flange.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a spinning ring for travelers having a downwardly-opening channeled base portion providing an outer supporting flange and an inner traveler-engaging flange, having an inner, substantially upright bearing face thereon, and havangles to each other with the upper leg inclined upwardly and outwardly and with the lower leg inclined downwardly and outwardly, a substantially upright bearing leg depending from the lower end of said lower leg, and oppositely bent hook-like portions provided at the terminal ends of said upper leg and said upright leg, the inner end of the upper leg having a thread-engaging loop therein.
4.. A traveler for spinning machines, comprising an upper bearing leg, a lower bearing leg extending outwardly and downwardly from the inner edge of the said upper bearing leg in substantially oblique relation thereto, a pendant leg depending from the lower end of said lower hearing leg and terminating in a substantially hookshaped portion.
5. A spinning ring for a traveler having a traveler-engaging bearing face containing a lubricant channel, and a wick consisting of a coiled wire fltted in said channel.
6. A device of the character described, comprising a spinning ring for a traveler having a traveler-engaging bearing face thereon containing 'an annular groove. and a metallic wick fltted in said groove and including a spirally-wound tubular member forming a lubricant receiving chamber from which the lubricant is distributed by capillary action to the surface of the windings of said member.
'7. A device of the character described, comprising a spinning ring for travelers having a downwardly-opening channeled base portion providing an outer supporting flange andan inner traveler-engaging flange having an inner substantially upright bearing face thereon, and having an upper portion including bearing faces disposed at substantially right angles to each other to provide an upper outwardly-inclined bearing face and a lower downwardly and outwardly inclined bearing face intersecting the upper end of the inner face ofsaid travelerengaging flange, said lower outwardly inclined bearing face having an annular groove therein. and a lubricant feed element removably fitted in said groove and consisting of a coil spring .whose bore constitutes a manifold for receiving the lubricant and whose windings serve by capillary action to distribute the lubricant about said bearing face.
