Description

Jab. 2, 1940. v

V In Canada March 10, 1936 2 Claims.
The invention relates to improvements in card filing devices, as described in the present specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing which forms a part of the same.
The invention consists essentially in mounting a series of cards on rotatable wheels and enclosing the wheels in cabinets, as more particularly pointed out in the claims for novelty following a description containing an explanation in detail of an acceptable form of the invention.
The objects of the invention are to devise an improved filing construction which will retain a large number of cards or the like, relative to its size, in a restricted area upon a'suitable support, easily and readily accessible; to construct a filing device from which the cards can beeasily removed and placed in proper position without disturbing the remainder;.to furnish a filing device in which the cards will be immediately available, and may be shifted wherever it is more convenient for use; to facilitate posting, saving time and labor, and eliminating errors to a great extent in checking, mailing lists and other operations; to construct a filing device in which the cards may be properly indexed, in clear View of the operator, colored if desired for speeding classification and reference; and generally to provide an enclosed filing device that will be dust-proof,,simple'and reasonable in cost of construction and eflicient for its particular purposes. a
In the drawing: n
Figure 1 is a side elevation showing a type of cabinet having a pull out cover.
Figure 2 is a cross sectional view showing the 35 method of mounting the file within the cabinet.
Figure 3 is a sectional plan view showing the method of mounting and securing the file within the cabinet.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary detail showing the 40 method of securing the tension spring to the pivoted frame. Y a
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary detail showing the pivoted frame journals.
Figure 6 is an enlarged fragmentary detail showing the pivoted frame locking device.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the various figures.
Referring to the drawing, the card index as indicatedby the numeral is in the form of a on a supporting shaft 26, suitably enclosed'in a cabinet 21, and may comprise a single or a plurality of units, depending on the capacity and the type desired 55 The cabinet as shown is ofthe desk-type havtrudes to within the operators reach. The posirotatable wheel-like member, rotatably mounted ing a flat top 45, and pull-out type unit cover 46. The card file or files,.as the case may be, are rotatably mounted on the supporting shaft 26, fixed in bearings 36 of the split or solid type. The supporting shaft 26 which may be rotatably or fixedly secured in the bearings, 36 is carried by the pivoted supporting frame 4?, which consists of two suitably spaced side members 68 being held together by, the distance pieces or tie rods 49,
and this pivoted frame 47 is pivotally journalled 10 on the stub shafts 50 formed with the collars, 5| and flanges 52, which are securely'bolted to the cross walls or framework of the cabinet.
In order that the file may be elevated to convenient height when posting, etc., and that the 5 same may completely disappear into the lower unit when not in use, to allow the operator a clear desk, a suitable handle :53 and position locking means 54 is provided. .The handle 53 is securely fixed in the pad 55 secured to the end of the pivoted supporting frame 41, and is adapted to extend outwardly through the end wall 56 of the cabinet, the end wall having the radially formedslot 51 through which the handle 53 pro- 25 tion locking means 54, which comprises a pointed spindle 58, terminating in a handgrip 59, suitably supported in the bracket 60 which is secured on the outer side of the cabinet end wall 56 in convenientrelation to the handle 53, and this pointed spindle 58 is adapted to engage holes 6| suitably spaced in the pad 62 securely fixed to'the pivoted supporting frame 41. To
prevent thespindle from working free or out of the pad 62, a tension spring 63 is provided, se curely held in position within'the bore 64 of the bracket 66 by the pinned washer 65.v
To relieve the dead weight of the file, etc., when raising or lowering to various positions, a balance is provided in the form of a'helical tension spring r 66, its coiled endbeing suitably housed in the casing 6'l,the open end 68 being attached to the front tie rod 49;" I
What I claim is: 1. In a filing device of the character described, a portable cabinet, a frame pivotally mounted in said cabinet, a transverse shaft secured to said frame, a rotary member mounted on said shaft and having a substantially circular channel adapted to receive a plurality of cards, means 5 for moving said frame about its pivot and thereby raising and lowering said rotary memberand means for locking said frame at the required elevation. a
2. In a filing device of the character described,
a portable cabinet, a, frame pivotally mounted in said cabinet, a transverse shaft secured to said frame, a rotary member rotatably mounted on said shaft and having a peripheral channel 5 adapted to receive a plurality of cards in a substantially radial position, means for retaining said cards within the channel and means for moving said frame about its pivot and thereby raising and lowering said rotary member, and means for locking said frame at the required elevation.
