-2 Claims.
My invention relates to vending machines and more particularly to newspaper vending machines.
One' of the principal objects of my invention is to provide a newspaper vending machine which is simple in construction, durable in use, efficient in operation and economical in manufacture.
Another object of my invention is to provide a above described. character equipped with means whereby a customer may easily discern whether a newspaper or vother periodical is available in the machine for sale.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, appended claims and annexed drawings.
Referring to the drawings wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of my invention.
Figures 2 and 3 are sectional views taken on the lines 2 2 and 3 3 of Figure l respectively.
Figures 4, 5 and 6 are detail sectional views taken on the lines 4 4, 5 5 and 6 6 of Figure 3 respectively;
Figure 7 is a detail perspective View of the magazine release member. f
Figure 8 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 5 8 of Figure l.
In practicing my invention I provide a housing 5 having an upper arcuate top section E and front, rear and side walls '1, 8 and 9 respectively. The side walls are provided with bearings Il) in which are journaled the ends of a rotatable shaft i E transversing the housing and to which isxed and rotatable therewith a reel constituting a magazine I2 equipped with sides I3 and i4 connected together by a plurality of radially extending partitions i5 coacting with the sides i3 Aand i4 to form aplurality of pockets iii.
Fixed to the shaft l between one of the bear'- ings lil and side Ii of the magazine is a drum i'i having connected thereto one end of a cable i3. The opposite end of the cable is connected to an elongated cylindrical shaped weight i9 slidably mounted in a guideway or tube 2t iixed to the bottom of the housing as clearly illustrated in 1Figure l. The cable is normally wound about the drum il and the weight I9 serves to normally urge rotation of the magazine. The sides 3 and Hl are fashioned with a plurality of circumferentially extending spaced slots 2i, a pair of said slots being oppositely disposed in the sides of the pocket i6 adjacent the outer periphery of the magazine.
the
(Cl. S12-59) Extending through each pair of said oppositely disposed slots and transversing the magazine is a shaft `22 having rotatably mounted thereon a roller 23 for engagement with a newspaper or the like as hereinafter setv forth.
The shaft 22 constitutes a connecting arm of a pair of springs 2li and 25 secured to the sides i3 and i@ respectively adjacent each of the pockets .9.3 although it is to be understood that the same couldY be equipped with a shaft or roller without interferingwith the operation of the device. n
Mounted on the side i4 adjacent the outer edge thereof are a plurality of spaced stopmembers 2 having inclined outer faces 28 for a purpose hereinafter set forth. Each of said stopfmembers is arranged adjacent and exteriorly of a respective partition i5.
Secured to the front Wall l is a coin operated mechanism 29 comprising a guide 3i! extending within said housing adjacent the magazine and a slide 3i mounted within said guide and equipped with a finger piece 32 and a coin opening 33. The slide 3i is also fashioned with a slot 34 communicating with the opening 33 and terminating at the inner end of the slide.
Mounted on the upper face of the guide 30 inwardly'of the wall 'l is a pair of spaced bearings 35 through which is journaled a spring actuated shaft 36 having fixed thereon a dog 3l equipped with a subjacently extending coin engaging section 38. The guide 3l) is fashioned with acoin opening 3@ adapted to register with the opening 33 when the slide is actuated inwardly and when thus in registry the dog 3l serves to engage the coin and'discharge the same downwardly through the opening 39 into a coin receptacle lil secured to the wall 1. Pivotally mounted on the upper face of the guide 3% adjacent the rear end thereof isa bellcrank lever li i the outer end of which is connected by means of a spring 2 to the wall l. The inner end of said bell crank lever is fashioned with a pin 43 operable within a slot it fashioned on one end of a magazine release arm t5. The
` opposite end of said release arm is pivoted to the` Wall 'i as at t6. The magazine release arm 45., intermediate the ends thereof, is fashioned with a laterally extending section adapted to engage one of the stop members 2l and prevent rotation of the magazine in counterclockwise direction. Said laterally extending section 41 is maintained in the path of the members 21 through the medium of the spring 42 acting on the bell crank lever 4 I. The arm of the bell crank lever 4I connected to the spring 42 between the ends thereof is provided with a downwardly extending coin engaging pin 48 extending into the slot 34 in the path of a coin.
Thus, when a coin is positioned in the opening 33 and the slide moved inwardly towards the opening 39 the coin will engage the pin 48, actuate the bell crank lever 4l which in turn causes the arm 45 to pivot away from the engaging stop member 21 and permit rotation of the magazine. As the coin is discharged through the opening 39 through the action of the dog 31, the spring 42 causes the bell crank lever 4| to return to normal position and reposition the extended section 41 of the arm 45 in the path of the next st'op member 21.
Above the coin operated mechanism 29 the section 6 of the housing is fashioned with a transversely extending elongated opening 49 in registry with one of the pockets I6, thus when a magazine is rotated as heretofore set' forth the distance of one pocket the customer may reach through the opening 49 and extract the newspaper or periodical from the pocket.
Located above the opening 49 is a window 50 in registry with the pocket to be moved downwardly in registry with the opening 49 by the actuation of the coin operated mechanism 29 'thereby permitting the customer to View the pocket to determine whether a newspaper or the like is available before insertion of a coin. The upper end of the rear wall is provided with a door 5i whereby access is had to the interior of the housing to load the pockets of the magazine.
When the magazine is being loaded the latter is rotated in clockwise direction, the inclined faces of the members 21 serving to engage the laterally extending sections 41 of the arms 45 to operate the bell crank lever and also to permit winding of the cable I8 about the drum l1. Thus when the pockets are loaded the device is set for vending operation as heretofore described.
What I claim is:
1. In a vending machine structure, a housing equipped with a dispensing opening in the front thereof, a magazine rotatably mounted in the housing and provided with side walls, radially extending partitions connecting said walls together and coacting with the latter to form a plurality of radially disposed pockets adapted for selective registry with said opening, said walls provided with arcuate shaped slots communicating with said pockets, shafts transversing said pockets and having ends extending through said slots, and springs mounted on the exterior side faces of said walls and having arms connected to the ends of said shafts for urging the latter towardsJ said partitions whereby articles carried in said pockets are maintained clamped therein against said partitions by said shafts.
2. In a vending machine structure, a housing equipped with a dispensing opening in the front thereof, a cylindrical-shaped magazine rotatably mounted in the housing and provided with side walls, radially extending partitions connecting said Walls together and coacting with the latter to form a plurality of radially disposed pockets adapted forselective registry with said opening, said walls provided with arcuate shaped slots adjacent the peripheries of said walls and communicating with said pockets, shafts transversing said pockets and having ends extending through said slots, rollers mounted on said shafts and rotatable relative to t'he latter, and springs mounted on the exterior side faces of said walls and having arms integrally connected to the ends of said shafts for urging the latter towards said partitions whereby articles carried in said pockets are maintained clamped therein against said partitions by said rollers.
