This invention relates to invalid beds.
The general object of the invention is to provide an improved invalid bed and fracture frame which allows the patient to be placed in various positions so that the best opportunity for recovery may be provided.
A more specific object of the invention is to provide a fracture frame including novel means for adjusting the frame.
Another object of the invention is to provide a fracture frame including a roller mounted patient support wherein novel means is arranged for adjusting the support by turning the rollers.
Another object of the invention is to provide a patient turning device including a pair of rollers so mounted and arranged that the rollers may be turned independently or simultaneously to adjust the position of the patient.
Other objects and the advantages of this invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Referring to the drawings by reference characters I have shown my invention as embodied in a bed which is indicated generally at l0. As 20 shown the bed includes a head II and a foot l2 with side rails 13 connecting the head and foot. This bed may be of any desired construction so long as it is suihciently strong and of the proper size.
My fracture frame is indicated generally at A. This fracture frame includes a head portion l5 and a foot portion It.
At the head the frame includes a hollow upright rectangular post ll which is supported by 30 a clamp member it. As clearly shown in Fig.
4 the clamp member is U-shaped with the post ll positioned between the arms thereof. The clamp member l8 further includes a U bolt is which is positioned in suitable apertures in the 3!. member l8 and has a rod 20 positioned between the arms of the U bolt and one face of the clamp member. The U bolt i8 is provided with nuts 2! for clamping the member 18 to the post IT and the member 18 to the rod 20. The rod 28 is se- 4 cured to the side members of the head H of the bed as by welding.
Positioned in the post I1 I provide a rack bar 22 having gear teeth 23 thereon which are engaged by a gear 2 3 which is positioned in a hous- 45 ing 25 (see Figs. 7, 8 and 9) of an operating device 26.
The housing 25 is mounted on the post I1 and adjacent the gear 24 the housing and the post I! have apertures 26 therein in which the gear 5 2A is positioned. The gear 24 is secured to a shaft 21 which is rotatably mounted in the housing 25 and has a worm gear 28 secured thereon. The worm gear 28 meshes with a worm pinion 29 which is secured to a shaft 38 which is rotatably mounted in the housing 25. The shaft 38 eX tends each way from the housing to adjacent each side of the bed where it includes a polygonal wrench or crank engaging portion 3|. When the shaft is rotated the gear 24 is rotated through the medium of the worm pinion 29, worm gear 28, and the shaft 21. When the gear 24 is rotated it moves the rack bar 22 either up or down depending on the direction in which it is rotated.
Rigidly mounted on the rack bar 22 by means of a stirrup 3| I provide a transverse bar 32,
the ends of which have reduced bar portions 33 thereon.
Mounted on the bar 32 adjacent one side of the bed I provide an operating member which is shown in detail in Figs. 10 to 14, inclusive. As shown the operating member 35 includes a casing 36 which includes an apertured boss 31 in which one of the reduced bar portions 33 of the bar 32 is positioned. The casing 36 is shown as secured in position on the portion 33 by a set screw 38. A shaft 39 is rotatably mounted in the casing 36 and the end thereof adjacent the side of the bed includes a polygonal wrench or crank engaging portion 48. The opposite end of the shaft 39 is positioned in a sleeve 4| which is slotted at each end as indicated at 42. The shaft 39 has a key member 43 thereon which is positioned in one of the sleeve slots 42 to rotatably connect the shaft and sleeve. Slidably mounted on the shaft 39 within the casing 36 I provide a pair of spaced bevel gears 44 and 45 which are rotatably connected to the shaft by a spline 46 on the shaft. (See Fig. 12.) Positioned at a right angle to the shaft 39 and extending to wards the foot of the bed the casing 36 has a shaft 41 rotatably mounted therein. Within the casing 36 the shaft 41 has a bevel gear 48 secured thereto which is positioned between the bevel gears 44 and 45. As shown in Fig. 10 the shaft 41 has an enlarged sleeve 49 thereon which is secured to the shaft by a pin 49 one end of which projects beyond the side of the sleeve. An elongated hollow roller 56 is mounted on the sleeve 48 and adjacent one end has an enlarged recess 5| therein and a s1ot'52 opening into the recess. The roller 56 is positioned on the shaft 41 with the sleeve 49 positioned in one of the recesses 5| and with the pin 49 positioned in the slot 52. A piece of canvas 53 is shown as secured to the roller 50 by a plate 54 which is secured to the roller by screws 55, although other means for securing the canvas may be employed. The canvas 53 is normally rolled around the roller 56 as shown in the drawings.
For shifting the gear 44 I provide a shifting member 56 which includes a flat horizontal plate 51 and a depending forked arm 58 the prongs of which are positioned in a groove 59 provided in the hub of the gear 44. The plate portion 51 of the member 56 adjacent the end oppposite the depending portion has an elongated slot 6|) therein (see Fig. 14) and intermediate the slot 6|! and the depending portion 58 the plate 51 has a threaded aperture 6| therein.
For shifting the gear 45 I provide a shifting member 62 which includes a flat horizontal plate 63 and a depending forked arm 64 the prongs of which are positioned in a groove 65 provided in the hub of the gear 45. Adjacent the end opposite the prongs the plate portion 63 has a slot 66 therein and intermediate the prongs and the slot 66 the plate has an aperture 61 therein.
The shifting member 62 is positioned between the shifting member 56 and the top of the casing 36.
The top of the casing 36 has an elongated slot 68 therein (see Figs. 10 and 11) which aligns with the apertures and slots in the plate portions of the shifting members.
On the top of the casing 36 I provide a shifting lever 69 for operating the shifting member 56 and a shifting lever 10 for operating the shifting member 62. The shifting lever 69 adjacent one end thereof is pivotally secured to the casing 36 as at 1| and the opposite end has a handle member 12 thereon and adjacent the pivot 1| the lever 69 has an arcuate aperture 12 therein. The shifting lever 18 is positioned over the lever 69 and is pivotally secured thereto as indicated at 13.
A bolt 14 is positioned in the arcuate aperture 12' of the lever 69 and extends downward through the slot 68 in the casing 36 and the slot 66 in the shifting member 62 and threadedly engages the plate 51 of the shifting member 56.
Positioned in the aperture 61 of the shifting member 62 I provide a bolt 15 which extends upward through the slot 60 of the shifting member 56 and extends upward through the casing slot 68 and is positioned in an aperture 16 in the lever 15 and has lock nuts 18 thereon to retain it in position.
When the levers 69 and 10 are in the positions shown in Fig. 10 the gear 44 meshes with the gear 48 and when the shaft 39 is rotated the shaft 41 will be rotated in one direction.
When the lever 69 is moved in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 10 to theposition shown in Fig. 11 the gear 44 moves out of mesh with the gear 48 and the gear 45 moves into mesh with the gear 48 whereby upon rotation of the shaft 39 the shaft 41 will be rotated in the opposite direction.
Mounted on the bar 32 at the end thereof opposite the operating member 35 I provide an operating member 16 which is shown in detail in Fig. 6. As shown the operating member 16 includes a casing 11 which includes an apertured boss 18 (see Fig. 3) in which one of the reduced bar portions 33 of the bar 32 is positioned. The casing 11 is shown as secured in position on the bar by a set screw 19. A shaft 80 is rotatably mounted in the casing 11' and has a bevel gear 8| secured thereto which meshes with a bevel gear 82 secured to a shaft 83 which is rotatably mounted in the casing 11'. One end of the shaft 86 like the shaft 39 of the operating member 35 is positioned in the sleeve 4| and has a key member 88 thereon (see Fig. 3) which is positioned in one of the slots 42 of the sleeve. The shaft 83 has an enlarged sleeve 84' thereon which is secured to the shaft 83 by a pin 85 one end of which projects beyond the side of the sleeve. An elongated hollow roller 86 is mounted on the sleeve 84' and adjacent one end has an enlarged recess 81 therein and a slot 88 opening into the recess. The roller 86 is positioned on the shaft 83 with the sleeve 84 positioned in the recess 81 and the pin 85 positioned in the slot 88. The edge of the piece of canvas 53 opposite the edge thereof which is secured to the roller 50 is secured to the roller 86 by a plate 89 which is secured to the roller by screws 96. A portion of the canvas 53 is normally rolled around the roller 86.
At the foot, the frame includes cylindrical uprights 9| each of which is engaged by a clamp 92. This clamp includes a J-shaped member 93 and a clamping plate 9. (See Fig. 24.) Bolts 95 hold the clamping plate and stem of the J against the foot posts I2 while the frame uprights M are held in the curve of the J as shown by a bolt 36. By loosening the bolts 85 and 96 the clamp may be shifted and the position of the fracture frame post 9I may be adjusted.
Positioned in each of the uprights 9'! I provide a rack bar 37 having gear teeth 98 thereon. Positioned on one of the uprights 9| I provide an operating member 99 which is similar in all respects to the previously described operating member 26 except that the shaft 3t! is of less length and the shaft 2? extends out of the casing and has a key member IIIIB thereon and is positioned in a sleeve IUI which has a slot I32 therein in which the key Ibii is positioned. (See Fig. 2.) Mounted on the other upright SI I provide an operating member Hi3 which is shown in detail in 15. The operating member Hi3 includes a casing IIiIl having a shaft I05 rotatably mounted therein on which a gear I06 is secured. Adjacent the gear I55 the casing IM and the upright Iii have an aperture It? therein in which the gear I36 is positioned to mesh with the gear 98 of the rack bar 9?. The shaft I35 extends towards the opposite side of the bed and has a key member IIlEi thereon and is positioned in the sleeve IEII with the key positioned in the slot of the sleeve.
Each of the rack bars is provided with a hollow boss M3 on its upper end through which a shaft lit extends. (See Fig. 2.) These shafts IIG are held in place by means of set screws III? and the inner end of each shaft supports a boss M3 which is mounted on a fracture frame foot member H t. The foot member II t extends from one boss H3 to the other across the foot of the bed and is provided with support bolts H5.
Adjacent each of the bosses I I3 the foot mem- Iil has a hollow bearing member Hi thereon which is adapted to receive a reduced shaft portion III of the roller member 50 or BIS. (See Figs. 2 and 5.)
When the rollers 58 and 85 are operatively mounted on the shafts t? and 83 and in the bearings I If and the lever fit is in the position shown in Fig. 11 and the shaft 39 is rotated, both the rollers 5t and 35 will rotate in the same direc tion. When the lever '55 is in the position shown in Fig. and the shaft 39 is rotated the rollers 59 and 36 will be rotated in opposite directions.
For applying traction to a patients limb I provide a traction device I58 which is shown in detail in Figs. 16 and 17. As shown the traction device III? includes an upright post IIG which is adapted to be removably secured to the foot bar its by a clamp member IZII. The post H9 has a plurality of apertures I2I therein. Mounted on the post I III I provide a slide member I212 which a bolt I23 therein which is positioned in one of the post apertures IZI and has a wing nut I2 5 thereon. The slide member I22 includes a plate portion I which extends outward at a right an-- gle to the post. Pivotally mouned on the plate I25 as by a bolt I25 I provide an arm IN. The arm I21" has a pin I23 thereon which is adapted to be positioned in one of a plurality of apertures I291 in the plate I25 and the bolt I25 has a wing nut I363 thereon for clamping the arm I2? in position. Depending from the arm I2? I provide a pulley I3I through which a cord I32 is rove. One end of the cord I32 is adapted to be secured to cast on a patients limb and the opposite end has a hooked member I33 thereon for supporting a weighted member I34.
Mounted on the device A I provide a frame I35 which includes a pair of spaced vertical head posts I36 anda-pair. of spaced vertical foot posts I31. Transversely the head posts I36 are connected by a rigid cross member I38 and the foot posts I31 are connected by a rigid cross member I39; Longitudinally the head and foot portions of the frame I35 are connected by two rods I lt which are secured to the head and foot portions by clamp members I GI One or more cross bars hi2 may be secured to the bars IdIl by adjustable clamp members M3 which slide on the bars I40 and various other devices may be suspended from the bars l lii'such as the trapeze IN.
The foot posts I31 at their lower ends are formed forked as at I to fit over the bolts I on the foot bar II l of the frame (see Fig. 2) and the head posts I36 at their lower ends are formed forked as at M6 to fit over bolts I47 provided on the operating devices 35 and It.
In Figs. 18, 19, and 20 I have indicated modified canvas roll operating devices generally at I5Il and IESI. When the devices I50 and IEI are usedtwo of the rack bars 97 and its associated parts are used at the head of the bed and two rack bars 9? are used at the foot of the bed.
The operating devices I50 and I5I each include a casing I52 having depending hollow bosses I53 (see Fig. 19) in which the rod III) of the associated rack bar 91 is positioned. Rotatably mounted in the casing I52 of the device I50 I provide a shaft I54 the outer end of which includes a wrench or crank engaging portion I55. The opposite end of the shaft IE4 is positioned in a sleeve I56 and has a key member Iiil thereon which is positioned in a slot I58 in the sleeve. Secured to the shaft I54 within the casing I provide a bevel gear I59 which meshes with a bevel gear IIiIl secured to a shaft III! which is rotatably mounted in the casing. The shaft IEI is an integral part of one wall of a housing I53. Extending from the said one wall of the housing I53 I provide a hub portion I fila and a reduced stud shaft IIiIb which extends out of the housing I63. Rotatably mounted on the hub portion Iiila I provide a worm gear IE2. The construction is such that the worm I together with the housing I53 walks about the shaft IGI. Rotatably mounted in the housing I63 I provide a shaft 154 having a worm pinion I55 thereon which meshes with the worm gear I62. Each end of the shaft I64 projects out of the housing I63 and includes wrench or crank engaging portions IfiIS. The gear I52 includes a sleeve portion I3! which extends out of the housing I63 and surrounds the stud shaft IS-Ib. The sleeve It? has a pin I38 projecting from one side thereof. The sleeve I61 is positioned in the roller 55.3 with the pin I58 positioned in the slot 52 as previously described in connection with the operating device 35.
Rot-atably mounted in the casing I52 of the device IEI I provide a shaft I69 one end of which projects out of the casing and is positioned in the sleeve I36 and has a key member III! thereon which is positioned in a slot III in the sleeve.
Within the casing the shaft I69 has a bevel gear Il2 secured thereto which meshes with a bevel gear I13 secured to a shaft I14 which is rotatably mounted in the casing. The shaft IM has a hub member I15 secured thereon and a sleeve member I'IB loosely mounted thereon. The hub I15 has an aperture I'I'I' therein and a bayonet slot I'Ifi opening into the aperture II'I. Positioned in the aperture III I provide a slide bar I78 having a screw IBI! secured thereto and positioned in the bayonet slot I18.
To operatively connect the hub I15 and the sleeve I16 the slide bar I19 is positioned in one of a plurality of apertures I8I provided in the sleeve member I16. The sleeve I16 has a pin I82 projecting from one side thereof. The shaft I16 is positioned in the canvas roller 86 with the sleeve I16 positioned in the roller recess 81 and the pin I82 positioned in the roller slot 88.
In operation, when the hub I15 is operatively connected to the sleeve I16 by the slide bar I19 and the shaft I54 is rotated the gear I59, through the medium of the gear I69 and the shaft I6I, will rotate the roller 59. At the same time the shaft I54 will rotate the shaft I69 through the medium of the sleeve I56, and the gear I12 will rotate the roller 86 through the medium of the shaft I14, hub I15, slide bar I19, and sleeve I16.
To rotate the roller 50 independently of the roller 86 by means of the crank engaging portion the slide bar I19 of the device I5I is moved out of the aperture in the sleeve I16 and the shaft I6 of the device I50 rotated whereupon the gear I59 will rotate the gears I69 which in turn will rotate the shaft I6I and thus rotate the housing I63 and causing the sleeve I61 to rotate the roller 50, and although the shaft I54, the sleeve I56, and the shaft I14 will be rotated the roller 86 will not rotate. The construction shown in Figs. 18, 19 and 20 is employed when the nurse wishes to change the canvas. In this case the patient is lowered until he rests upon the bed whereupon the operation just described is performed and the canvas is then unrolled freely from the rail 86: until the free end on this roll is secured after which the entire canvas is slipped from under the patient and rolled upon the roll 56. A fresh canvas is then inserted under the patient and one end thereof is secured on the roll 50 and wound after which the other end is Wound onto the roll 86 after which the slide bar I19 is returned to position. An alternative way of rotating the roller 59 alone is to rotate the shaft I64 thereby rotating the worm pinion I65 which will rotate the worm gear I62 thereby rotating the sleeve I61 which in turn rotates the roller 56. When the shaft I64 is rotated the housing I63 remains stationary and the gear I62 and the sleeve I61 rotate freely about the stud shaft Hill).
In Figs. 21 and 22 I have indicated a simplified form of canvas roller operating device generally at I95. When the device I85 is used two rack bars 91 and their associated parts are used at the head of the bed and also at the foot thereof. The device I95 includes a transverse bar I86 having a depending hollow boss member I81 adjacent each end in which the bars I III of the rack bars 91 are positioned. Adjacent each end of the bar I86 a shaft I 88 is rotatably mounted therein on which is secured a pinion gear I89 and a sleeve I96 which is secured to the shaft by a pin I9I which projects from one side of the sleeve. To prevent inward rotation of the gears I89 I provide adjacent each of the gears a dog member I92 which is pivotally secured to the bar I86 as at I93.
To rotate the gears I89 a spanner wrench I94 is applied to the gear teeth. The previously described canvas rollers are adapted to be operatively mounted on the shafts I88 by positioning the shafts I88 in the rollers and the sleeves I in the end recesses of the rollers with the pins I9I in the roller slots.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
1. In a reversing mechanism for operating the rolls of an invalids bed, a shaft having a bevel gear thereon, a second shaft at right angles to the first shaft, a pair of gears on the second shaft and arranged on opposite sides of the first gear, said pair of gears being splined on their shaft to move towards and from the first gear, a support, a shifting member movably mounted on said support and engaging one of said pair of gears, a second shifting member movably mounted on said support and engaging the other of said pair of gears, a lever pivoted on said support, a cam on said lever, said support having a slot, means on said first mentioned shifting member passing through said slot and engaging said cam to shift said first mentioned shifting member, a pin on said second shifting member passing through said slot, a second lever engaging said pin and pivotally mounted on the first lever, the pivot of said second lever being disposed at one side of the axis of said first lever whereby when the first lever has moved said first shifting member to withdraw its associated gear from said first gear said other of the pair of gears will be moved into engagement with said first gear.
2. In a reversing mechanism for operating the rolls of an invalids bed, a shaft having a bevel 35 gear thereon, a second shaft at right angles to the first shaft, a pair of gears on the second shaft and arranged on opposite sides of the first gear, said pair of gears being splined on their shaft to move towards and from the first gear, a housing on said driven shaft, a shifting member movably mounted on said housing and having a fork engaging one of said pair of gears, a second shifting member movably mounted on said housing and having a fork engaging the other of said pair of gears, said housing having a slot, a lever pivoted on said housing, a cam slot on said lever, a pin on said first mentioned shifting member and passing through said slot, said cam slot receiving said pin and being so cone structed that when said lever is shifted said first mentioned shifting member is moved, a second pin on said second shifting member passing through said slot, a second lever engaging said second pin and pivotally mounted on the first lever, the pivot of said second lever being disposed at one side of the axis of said first lever whereby when the first lever has moved said first shifting member to withdraw its associated gear from said first gear said other of the pair of gears will be moved into engagement with said first gear.
