Description

M. CAMPBELL. Sheet-Metal Vessel.
No. 218,483. Patented Aug. 12,1879.
-44 %M A/z 7142/2 @4460.
N. PETERS. PHOTCLUTHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON D c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARVIN CAMPBELL, OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA.
|MPROVEMENT IN SHEET-METAL VESSELS.
, Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 218,483, dated August 12, 1879; application filed February 12, 1879. a
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARVIN CAMPBELL, of South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet-Metal Vessels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective view of my invention in broken section. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of a vessel representing my invention.
Identical parts in the drawings are designated and referred to by the same letters of reference.
My invention relates to sheet-metal vessels of any kind-cans, buckets, &c.; and it consists in the manner in which I attach the bottom to the vessel, which consists of a disk of metal and a disk of wood, paper, or other suitable material, the same being a compound bottom, as will hereinafter more fully appear.
A is the body of the vessel. B is an annular groove or bead formed on the body of the vessel, near its bottom, with the concave surface upon the outside of the "essel, and its convex surface upon the inside of the vessel, projecting inward from the body of the vessel, thus forming a shoulder upon the inside of the vessel and near its bottom.
G is a metal disk, having its edge turned over, forming a burr or flange, as represented at O. The diameter of this disk, after the burr is turned, is the same as the diameter of the inside of the vessel beneath the annular bead or shoulder B.
D is a disk of wood, paper, or other suitable material, of such a diameter as to fit inside the burr or flange U of the disk 0.
The disk D may have an annular groove, E, out upon its edge or this groove E may be dispensed with, at the option of the manufacturer.
The body of the vessel extends sufficiently below the head to allow of its being flanged inwardly over upon the disk D and set into the annular groove E, if the groove is used. This flange is represented at A.
The operation of myinvention is as follows: The body of the vessel being formed of any flexible metal in the common manner, the bottom of the body of the vessel is then turned inwardly, forming the flange A. The disk D is then laid in the concave side of the metal disk 0, the flange G encircling the disk D, and the two are together pushed down into the body of the vessel until the disk D rests upon the flange A. The annular bead B is then formed in the body of the vessel, just above the disk 0, and the two disks are then held firmly between the flanges A and the annular bead B. If desired, the flange A may then be more closely pressed against or into the disk D, or into the groove E, if it be used. The soldering of the metal disk (3 to the bead B, or to the body of the vessel just below the bead, may now be readily done, and the compound bottom of wood and metal is complete.
In the manufacture of dry measures and similar vessels, the soldering may be dispensed with, and the bottom satisfactorily held in position by and between the flange and the bead.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The vessel A, combining in its construction the metallic disk 0, having a peripheral flange, O, and a disk, D, received into the flange G, and together confined between an annular bead, B, in the body and a flange, A, on the lower edge of the body, turned down into a recess formed on the under side of the disk, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MARVIN CAMPBELL.
Witnesses WM. T. CARSKADDEN, G. H. FISHER.
