Description

Dec. 12, 1939.
J. ACHATZ VEGETABLE GRADER BELT Original Filed Nov. 19, 1937 2 Shets-Sheet 1 Inventor Z JIM; flckazf;
Attorneys Patented Dec. 12, 1939 ATENT orries VEGETABLE GRADER BELT John Achatz, Hooper, 0010., assignor of onehalf to S. B. Collins, Hooper, Colo.
Application November 19, 1937, Serial No. 175,532 Renewed October 3, 1939 1' Claim. (01. 209-84) This invention appertains to new and useful improvements in vegetable graders and more particularly to a novel belt for grading machines. Tne principal object of the present in- Vention is to provide a belt or screen construction of a multiplicity of hingedly connected links reinforced in such a manner as to promote durability and less likelihood of the ready developments of defects.
yOther-important objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the reader of the following specification.
In the drawingsa Figure 1 represents a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view through the belt.
belt.
Figure 3 is a perspective view showing the inner side of one of the links.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken substantially on line 4-4 of Figure 2.
' Figure 5 is a sectional view on line 55 "of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen that numeral 5 denotes the usual belt-carrying Wheel on the shaft 6 and over which the belt generally referred to by numeral 1 is trained. This belt is made up of'a multiplicity of links and one of which is clearly shown in Figure 3. Each link 35 Certain of the pins H- are bridged by the arcuate-shaped bridge members I Figure 2 is a fragmentary, top plan view of they The longitudinal edge portions of the plate 8 between the barrels 9-46 are pressed inwardly to form flange members i3l l. These flanges extend from arcuate origin points on the head portion of the plate 8 and serve to reinforce the link against transverse'bending. Obviously the barrels s, m serve to prevent longitudinal bending while the flanges l3-lil serve to pre-,
vent transverse bending. Furthermore, by having the flanges l3l4 originating from arcuate points on the longitudinal edge portions of the plate 8 a better grading opening is afforded.
The barrels 9!0 on their corresponding pins H are separated from like barrels on the same pin by barrels of the links of adjacent rows.
While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms,,it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the inven tion as claimed hereinafter. I
. Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is:.
A belt of the class described comprising a plurality of pivotally connected links, each link being formed from a substantially rectangular metallic plate of uniform width throughout and including rolled end portions providing transverse barrels for the reception of connecting pins, the length of the barrels corresponding to the width of the plate, the longitudinalmarginal portions of the plate between the barrels being bent at substantially right angles on inwardly and oppositely curved lines and providing arcuate flanges.
