Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 218,253, dated August 5, 1879; application filed April 28, 1879. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FERNANDO GAUTIER, of West Pascagoula, Jackson county, Mississippi, have invented an Improvement in Plows, of which the following is a specification.
The invention consists in an oscillating knife operated by means of an eccentric, as hereinafter described.
The drawing is a side elevation.
A represents a steel plate, riveted or bolted to a land-side, B, and having a wheel, D, pivoted at G. This wheel has points or teeth E E, and the latter are made adjustable by a mu, 0. F is a cog-wheel fast to wheel D, and employed to transmit the power. 0 is an oscillating knife, pivoted at P, and having arms 1" s, between which Works an eccentric, T, on a shaft, S. This eccentric causes the knife to vibrate, so that the blades W W and M N will out like a pair of scissors.
The advantage of an oscillating knife over a rotary one is, that when plowing very deep or turning under coarse material it is not so liable to come into contact with the ground.
What I claim as new is- 1. The combination, with the land-side of a plow, of the plate A, eccentric T, shaft S, and geared wheel D, having teeth E, as shown and described.
2. The combination, with an oscillating knife, 0, of the steel plate A, having a tapered shear-edged notch fixed to the land-side, as specified.
