Description

(lib ModeL) S. J. LOVE.
Land Roll-er and Stack Glitter.
No. 232,283. Patented Sept. 14,1880.
-FEYERS. PWJTO-LITMOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. D 6..
Nrrnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SHELBY J. LOVE, OF THORNDYKE, WEST VIRGINIA.
LAND-ROLLER AND STALK-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 232,283, dated September 14, 1880,
Application filed July 7, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SHELBY J. LOVE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Thorndyke, in the county of Oabell and State of est Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Land-Rollers and Stalk Cutters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in land-rollers and stalk-cutters; and it consists in the rollers A and A, located in frame B, the removable roller-pieces a. a, knives b b; in the method of combiningin one and the same. devicealand-roller and cornstalk-cutter; and in the combination and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter more fully specified.
In the drawings, Figurel is a plan view of my device when used as a cornstalkcutter. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of one of the rollers. Fig. 3 is a similar view of one of the rollers when employed as a landroller. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the knives, and Fig. 5 is an end view thereof.
The rollers A A (there being two rollers, as shown) are provided with the axles C G, which have their hearings in the hubs D D. By employin g two rollers instead of but a single roller, as ordinarily constructed-'my single roller being divided into two sections-in turnin g a corner dragging is avoided, and as the rollers can be turned at a much less curve the diameter of the circle described is greatly lessened thereby.
E E mark the flat spokes of the roller, which radiate from the hubs D D and are mortised therein.
F F mark intermediate braces, and G G the removable pieces, the removable pieces being secured by the screw-bolts d (I, one of which is located at either end thereof. These screwbolts are slipped into orifices provided in the intermediate braces, in the center thereof, and they are secured by nuts 0 e, as shown, recesses being provided in the removable pieces G G for their reception, as a means of preventing their becoming worn by contact with the land.
When it is desired to employ the device for cutting cornstalks the pieces Gr Gare removed and the knives b b are bolted to the intermediate braces, F F, the bolts which secure them being placed in the same orifices as employed for the intermediate removable pieces, GG.
B represents the frame of my device. It has its bearings on a transverse shaft-bar, H, and the axle (J, which for this purpose is projected through the hubs at either end.
f marks the drivers seat, and g his foot-rest, supported by the transverse shaft-bar H.
The knives b b have at either end thereof, as shown in Fig. 4, the shoulders h h, which are provided with the orifices i 'i, for reception of the screw-bolts for securin g them rigidly to the intermediate braces, F F.
The blades of the knives are caused to project at an angle from the shoulders h h, in order that the knife-blade may be inclined as it strikes the cornstalk.
\Vhat I claim is- In a combined land-roller and stalk-cutter, the combination of the radial spokes or arms E and perforated bracesf, adapted to receive knives b or pieces 9, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I aftix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SHELBY J. LOVE.
