My invention relates to suction nozzles for use in connection with a vacuum cleaner and particularly to duplex nozzles provided with openings of different sizes which may be selectively con- 5 nected to the source of suction. When the larger opening is in use it will cover a larger surface, thereby increasing the speed of cleaning. However, if a concentrated suction is desired in order to remove dirt which the largeropening will not 10 pick up, the smaller opening may be brought into use.
The objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent from the following description considered in connection with the accompanying 15 drawing which forms part of this specification,
and of which:
Fig. 1 is a cross-sectional view of a .preferred embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view takenon the 20 line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing certain parts in a diierent position.
Referring to the gures, reference character I designates a hollow elongated nozzle body deg5 flning an elongated suction opening I I. A cylindrical part I2 is integral with or rigidly secured to the central part of body I0 and communicates therewith through an opening I3. Part I2 is adapted to receive a conduit for connecting the 30 nozzle to a source of suction. Slidably mounted within parallel transverse slots in the upper part I4 of the body I0 is a box-like valve structure I5,
including spaced walls I6 which extend traversely across the space within the part I0. Opening w I3 is disposed between these walls.
With the parts `in the position shown in Fig. 1, wall I6 cuts on communication between the opening I3 and the ends or branches of the elongated suction opening II, thus confining the flow of air to the small central part of the opening II bounded by the walls I6. This concentrated ow of air is of value in picking up both heavy articles tion between the opening I3 and all parts of the suction opening I I. The valve I5 may be retained in its elevated position by means of springpressed detents 20 which engage recesses 2I formed in the nozzle body. 5 While I have shown and described one more or less specic embodiment of my invention it is to be understood that this has been done for purposes of illustration only, and that the scope of the invention is not to be limited thereby, but 10 is to be determined by the appended claims viewed in the light of the prior art.
. What I claim is:
1. In a suction nozzle, a hollow body having an elongated suction opening and a centrally located outlet adapted to be rigidly connected to a hollow handle for moving said nozzle over a surface to be cleaned and for connecting said outlet to a source of suction, said body including elongated hollow branches disposed on either side of said outlet, the end portions of said elongated opening'being formed in said branches, said body being formed with a transverse slot to one side of said outlet, and a member slidably mounted in said slot and movable with respect to said bodyY and the outlet formed therein from a position interrupting ow from one of said branches to said outlet to a position permitting free flow. 2. In a suction nozzle, a hollow body having an' elongated suction opening and a centrally located outlet adapted to be rigidly connected to a hollow handle for moving saidnozzle over a surface to be cleaned and for connecting said outlet to a source of suction, said body including elongated hollow branches disposed on either side l345 `of said outlet, the end portions of said elongated opening being formed in said branches, said body being formed with .a Ytransverse slot on either side of said outlet', and members slidable in said slots and joined rigidly together outside said o body, said members being movable with respect to said body and the outlet formed therein into and out of said body through said slots to interrupt :flow from said branches to said outlet and to permit free flow, respectively.
