This invention relates to a retractable pen point holder, the general object of the invention being to provide a handle member having a bore therein and a slidable pen point holder adapted to be moved into the bore to have a portion of the handle enclose the point or by projecting the holder the point will be projected so that it can be used in the ordinary manner.

This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.

In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:

Figure 1 is a view of the improved pen holder 20 with the point in projected position.

Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view with the holder and point in retracted position.

Figure 3 is a view of the handle member.

Figure 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.

Figure 5 is a View of the tubular member having the tongue for carrying the rivet.

Figure 6 is a sectional detail view showing the specific shape of the rivet and how it engages an enlarged end of the slot.

In these views the numeral handle member which is provided with a bore 2 which opens out through the large end of the handle member and said handle member is formed with a slot 3 which communicates with the bore and said slot having enlarged ends 4 of substantially conical shape. The point holder includes a tubular member or sleeve 5 having a spring tongue "6 projecting from the inner end, said tongue being provided with a perforation for receiving a rivet 8 which passes through the slot 3 and said holder also includes the inner sleeve 9 which fits in the sleeve 5 and is so arranged as to leave an arcuate opening between the two sleeves for receiving the pen point Ill so that the point can be readily re- 4 moved from between the sleeves to permit a new point to be put in place.

As will be seen this rivet is provided with an upper cylindrical part under its head and a substantially conical part under the cylindrical part. When this conical part of the rivet engages either of the enlarged ends 4 of the slot 4 the rivet will be held against movement and thus the pen point a bearing sleeves '5 will be locked in either projected or retracted position. When it is desired to move 5 the pen point carrier from one position to the other the rivet is pressed upon so as to move the conical part thereof out of the enlarged end of the slot so as to bring the cylindrical part of the rivet l indicates the opposite the slot. Then the rivet is moved longitudinally through the slot with the cylindrical portion passing through the slot. Then when the rivet reaches the other end of the slot pressure is removed from the rivet so that the spring tongue ii will press the rivet upwardly to place the conical portion thereof in the conical enlargement at the end of the slot and thus the parts are locked in this position.

As will be seen the parts will be retracted and projected without touching the point or a sleeve so that there is no danger of one getting ink on his fingers and the parts are positively held in projected and retracted position by placing the rivet in the extension 5.

t is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.

It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. A pen device of the class described comprising a handle member having a tubular part, a pen point holder slidably arranged in said tubular, part, said tubular part having a longitudinally extending slot therein, a resilient tongue connected with the holder, a projection carried by the tongue and passing through the slot, said projection having an enlarged part adjacent its lower end and the slot having enlarged portions at its ends for receiving said enlarged part of the projection, the enlarged part of the projection being disengaged from the large part of the slot when the projection is depressed.

2. A pen device of the class described comprising a handle member having a tubular part and an elongated slot in, communication with the tubular part, a sleeve having a tongue thereon, a rivet connected with the tongue to pass through the slot and an inner sleeve in the first-mentioned sleeve for holding a pen point between the two sleeves.

3. A pen device of the class described comprising a handle member having a tubular part and an elongated slot in communication with the tubular part, a sleeve having a spring tongue thereon, a rivet connected with the tongue to pass through the slot and an inner sleeve in the firstmentioned sleeve for holding a pen point between the two sleeves, said slot having enlarged ends of conical shape and the rivet having a lower conical part to engage said ends to hold the point in projected or retracted position.
