Description

Patented Nov. 28, 1,939
PATENT OFFICE CUBLEB MB Siegfried Behr, Flushing, N. Y., alsignor to Ben Hur Products, Inc., New York, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application April 27, 1939, Serial No. 272,394
4Claiml.
`This invention relates to combs and particularly to combs which are adapted to be carried by ladies in their hand-bags for which purpose the combs must be of relativelysmall size.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a comb of that type and one which in addition is combined with an instrument for facilitating the curling of the hair and which still is small enough to be carried in a ladies hand-bag and which is light and may be easily operated.
With these and other objects in view which will appear more clearly as the description progresses, the invention consists in the novel construction, adaptation and arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. l is a top plan view of the improved comb-curler.
Fig. 2 is a side view thereof with the curler bars in operative position.
Fig. 3 is a side view of the comb with the curler bars in closed position thereon.
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view on an enlarged scale taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a. detail sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is a detail view showing the pivot joint of the curler part on the comb looking in the direction of the arrow 6 6 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 'l is a detail view in the direction of arrows 1-1 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 8 is an exploded detail section on the line 8-8 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 9 is a vertical section on the line 9-9 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing I0 is a comb, preferably of moldable plastic-material such as acetate, plastic or the like. It consists of a back portion Illa which has a horizontal longitudinal top line and a lower longitudinal line slightly inclined thereto so that the back portion Illa is wider at one end than at the other but its thickness is equal between these lines. From the lower limit line, a plurality of teeth II which are integral with the back I Ila extend downwardly, parallel to each other and all have their ends on a line parallel to the top horizontal line of the back Illa which makes the teeth ofl gradually and uniformly increasing length as .shown from right to left in Fig. 2. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the back Illa of the comb extends on the right side tapering a distance beyond the end tooth Ila of the comb as can be seen in Fig. 1 and by the dotted line indicating the end of extension I0a in Fig.
2. Against both faces of back Ita lean the curler plates I2a which form the rear portions of curler bars I2 and pivotally attached to back Illa by means of a pivot pin or eyelet Il. Each of the curler plates has a cylindrical projection I4 and Ila surrounding the central aperture for pivot I3 and extending into comb portion Ia through a. portion of its thickness. Cylinder I4 `is provided with a horizontal slot Mb while cylinder Ila is provided with a horizontal bar Ile on its 1|) face which flts closely into the slot of Mb. The inner faces cf plates Ila are each provided with two small recesses Il which engage complementary projections lia on comb-back Illa. These projections and recesses are preferably located on the line of the longitudinal axis of bars I2 when in fully closed and open positions and a short distance from pivot I3 and adapted to snap into and out of the recesses when said bars I2 are rotated on pivot I3, the resiliency of the material of which the comb I0, curler bars I2 and curler plates I2a are made permitting this action, while the slot lib and projecting bar llc lock plates I2a together for uniform simultaneous rotation, while the projecting heads lia arrest the rotation when the bars are in open and closed positions on the comb. The shape of the curler bars I2 as shown in Fig. 9 in section is approximately semicircular so that together they have the form of a longitudinally slotted cylinder, slightly tapered in which form they are held, by the pivotal joint above described, in any angular position.
When the curler bars I2 are closed as shown in Fig. 3, the comb may easily be accommodated in a `ladys hand bag and conveniently used as a comb. When the lady desires to curl her locks, she will first straighten a strand of hair using the comb, then open the curler bars as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and shift the strand of hair into the slot between the bars, turn the comb and roll up the hair on the curler bars and finally place a bobby pin alongside the bars on the curled hair to hold the curl from unwinding.
It is thought to be clear that the simple construction of the device herein described provides a very simple and very useful device for combing and curling the hair which can be manufactured and sold at a very reasonable price and conveniently be used because of its simplicity.
Changes in details of construction may be made without departing from the invention and I therefore desire to be limited only by the state of the prior art and the appended claims.v A. l
1. A comb having at one end a pair of elongated bars pivotaliy connected thereto .on opposite sides, said bars being held on opposite sides of said comb and connected by a common pivot to move simultaneously through equal angles.
2. A comb having at one end a pair of elongated bars oi' semi-circular section pivotally connected thereto on opposite sides forming a practically cylindrical structure, said bars being Joined? to each other to move simultaneously through.
equal angles and means to limit the movement of said bars and to hold them automatically at xed end positions.
3. A comb comprising a at back portion and teeth extending therefrom parallel to each other, said back portion having an enlarged portion at one end with an aperture therein, a pair oi semicylindrical bars, one on each side oi' said back portion, each bar having a cylindrical boss thereon lodged in the aperture of said back portion, a pivot pin passing through said bosses ior Joining said bars to said comb permitting rotary movement thereon, a projection on the face o! one boss engaging a recess in the other boss Joining said bars for simultaneous rotary motion on said pivot pin.
4. A comb comprising a back portion, teeth depending from said back portion, a pair of spaced bars pivotally -connected to one end of said back portion and forming an extension thereof, said bars being adapted to be collapsed over said back portion, means for holding the bars in fixed extended position and means ior holdingthe bars in iixed collapsed position.
