This invention relates to lifting and carrying devices and more especially to a device for lifting and carrying a storage battery of the type used in automobiles.
A feature of the invention is an improved clamp for the terminal of a storage battery of the type described which is easily positioned on and which provides a firm and secure grip on the terminal and absolutely prevents the clamp from slipping off. Another feature of the invention is such a clamp formed so that it will not bend or mutilate the top of the terminal and will take a secure grip at a position on the terminal near the battery. Another feature of the invention is a twopart clamp in which the parts are mounted to rock easily with reference to each other but which are permanently securedto each other. Another feature is a clamp having two parts which are simple to manufacture and provide a powerful grip on the terminal of the battery. Other objects will appear as the description proceeds,

I The electric storage battery A is of the type used in automobiles and has two diagonally disposed termina s B, each of which is in the form of a truncated cone. A strap handle ill is preferab y made of fabric set in rubber and supports at each end by a permanent fastening. such as rivets or the like, a metal loop I I to the lower end of which my improved clamp is pivotally secured by means of a transverse slot I2 formed near one end of a fiat-metal element I 3 of the c amp. Each element I3 has a short fla upward extension M narrower than the s o ted end of the element. bent away from the perpendicular towards the end slot to form an acute angle with the element 13 and also has two side s ops I5 at the bottom of the u ward extension 14. At the t p. the extension I4 is bent in th op osite direction to form the flat terminal-engaging extension it which forms an obtuse ang e with the extension I4 and which has centrally of the right end a cut-away portion [1 which forms a part of a circle and is engageable with the side wall of a terminal B in the clamping position. The extension I6 is stamped on the top at both sides near the extension M to form sidewardly extending lugs I8 after the extension l6 has been inserted from the bottom through a slot l9 formed transversely near the left end of the other clamping element 20, which is a fiat piece having, near the opposite end, a circular opening 22 which fits down over a terminal B and preferably approximately to the bottom thereof.
The two elements l3 and 20 of the clamp are permanently fixed together but so that they can rock pivotally in the slot l9 with reference to each other, the rocking or pivotal motion being limited by the stops I 5 and the lugs I8. The aperture 22 easily admits the top of the terminal B because of the frustro-conical form of the terminal.
Referring to Figures 1, 2, 3 and 5, the clamping action when the hand grasps the strap l 0 to lift the battery A is clearly illustrated. The curved edge I! engages the wall of the terminal B. The extension l4 engages the left side of the slot 19. The top surface of clamping element l3 engages the left edge of clamping element 20 which forms a fulcrum so that the weight of the battery A and the opposed upward lift on the strap l0 tend the opposite wall of the terminal B. When the battery A is set down and the end of the strap I 0 is dropped down, as shown in Figure 4, the edge I! of extension I 6 is tilted up and away from the terminal B, and thereupon the clamping element 20 may be easily slipped up off the terminal By Havin disclosed my invention and realizing that in view of my disclosure many modifications, substitutions. and omissions of parts may readily occur to those skilled in the art, I do not limit myself except as in the appended claims.
I claim:-
1. A battery-carrying strap having clamps for en aging the terminals of an electric storage battery, each clamp comprising in combination, a flat iece having an opening at one end engageable in a transverse plane with a frustraconical terminal of the battery and a transverse slot near the other end, and an element passing thru said slot and rockable in said slot, having one end above said piece and engageable with and exerting downward pressure on said terminal and the other end extending below said piece and attached to said strap, an intermediate portion between said ends and passing through said transverse slot disposed at an obtuse angle with reference to said terminal end and disposed at an acute angle with reference to the top of said strap end, said intermediate portion and said opening end of said element being narrower than the remainder of the element, and a lug on the side of said opening end of said element and overlying an end of the transverse slot.
2. A battery-carrying strap having clamps for engaging the terminals of an electric storage conical terminal of the battery and a transverse slot near the other, an element passing thru said slot and rockable in said slot, having one end above said piece and engageable with and exerting downward pressure on said terminal, the other end extending below said piece and attached to said strap, and an intermediate portion between said ends and passing through said transverse slot and disposed at an obtuse angle with reference to said terminal end and disposed at an acute angle with reference to the top of said strap end, said intermediate portion and said strap end of said element being wider than the remainder, and a pair of lugs oppositely disposed on the side of said terminal end of said element and overlying the ends of said transverse slot.
