11 Claims.
My invention relates to means for ornamenting leather, cloth, paper,v and other such materials generally used in making shoes, belts,` bags, and many other articles of merchandise.
"' The object of my invention is to provide a simple machine constructed to apply coloring matter to a surface to form a band or ribbon-like line or lines extending parallel to each other to simulate a ribbon or cord, etc., or overlay stripping.
A further object is to provide a machine operative to make a line or lines of stitching on one or both sides of said band or line simultaneously and progressively with the application of the coloring matter.
Afurther object is to provide a process for and a machine to employ the process for simultaneously applying the colored matter to the material in a line or stripe and to indent the material atv one or both sides of the stripe to simulate stitching, or to simultaneously stitch a line or lines adjacent to thestripe.
A further object is to provide a container 'for the coloring matter that is permanently sealed at it in removable relation in the machine.
The machine may be constructed as a whole if desired but I prefer to make it as an attachment for sewing machines such as used for sewing leather', etc. and utilize the feeding means thereof f and the sewing means in carrying out the process.
The drawing4 which forms a part of this specication discloses a preferred'form of construction.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a machine embodying my invention.
Fig.' 2 is a front elevational view.
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view, shown partly in section.

The shank is formed to provide a rectangular shaped opening I2 the side walls of which serve to guide the casing in a vertical direction.
The casing is made in two half parts indicated by I3 and I3', the portion I3 having an integral lug I4 which extends into the opening I2 and fits `in sliding engagement with the side walls thereof and is held to the shank II by the bolt and nut construction I5.l
The casing portions are held together by screws I6 and I1 respectively, the portion I3' remaining in position when said screws are removed.

The wheel is'carried by a shaft on which it is rotatable and the shaft is provided with a screw adjacent to the head'ZIl Whichscrews into a thread (not shown) formed in the casing portion I3 and serves toy assist in holding the casing portions together, as will be readily understood.
The outer or tread surface of the wheel I9 is roughened or serrulated in any desired form to` carry and deposit a color on a surface such as leather, to simulate a ribbon or tape or cord, etc., and to serve as a means whereby the wheel may be rotated by passing the material in contact therewith in the act of applying the coloring matter thereto.
The upper end of the ycasing is formed to provide a cylindrical part 22 which is open at its upper and lower ends and serves to support a removable container 23 which holds the coloring matter.
The container is provided with oppositely extending pins which fit into bayonet shaped slots 25 formed in the enlarged top portion 26 of the casing as illustrated.
This arrangement prevents the displacement of the container when the machine is in operation and also serves to position the lower end thereof adjacent to the wheel I9. I
To open the container which is made of soft material, a screw 21 formed with a sharp edge on its inner end, is fitted to screw into the casing wall and extend therethru into contact with the lower end of the container at one side thereof and shear aportion to permitthe coloring matter to flow to the tread of theA wheel forward of its greatest diameter so that the color will flow in the 'direction in which the wheel is rotating.
Formed in each of the inner side portions of the casing isl a shallow groove indicated by 28 which extend in curved form from the forward side of the wheel to a container 29 and serve to collect and carry excess liquid which may leak from the tread of the wheel, to said container.
Located above the grooves 28 are grooves 30 which lead from the Wheel at 3l to the said container and serve the same purpose.
34 indicates a vertically extending shaft which extends thru the upper wall of the casing at their point of juncture and carries a frusto-conical brush which rests in a chamber 35 and is rotated by means (not shown) which may be automatically driven when the device is operating, or may be manually rotated, the object being to keep the serrations free from dry matter or from becoming clogged by the dryingr of a part of the matter.
32 indicates a piece of material such as soft rubber, which ts in a slot 33 formed in the casing, and which serves to closely confine the coloring matter in the serrations in the wheel.
The presser-foot lil is provided with two or more apertures 35 spaced apart thru which needles may pass to indent or puncture the leather or material being treated, to simulate stitching which extends along the band or stripe as it is formed, and a band of colored material similar to a typewriter ribbon may be used to color the needle and carry the color into the indents if desired, said ribbon being indicated by 3l in Fig. 3. v
The cross-head 38 carrying the needles may be reciprocated in timed relation with the movement of the material being treated, the sewing machine serving the purpose in the usual manner of stitching, and the eyes of the needles serving to carry the color into the perforations.
The container 29 is used as a drip-pan and may be removed at any time by simply siiding it from its position of rest.
39 indicates a spring which normally holds the casing in its lowest position but permits it to rise a limited distance in case the wheel should enn counter a hard substance or that the thickness of the material should vary, thus permitting the machine to follow any uneven surface over which the wheel is passing.
The device may be operated by use of the sewing machine to which it is attached, and which serves to feed the material to the tread of the wheel automatically and at the same time to indent the surface of the material with the needles, as will be readily understood.
The process of simulating a ribbon by depositing a band or line of coloring matter on a surface such as leather and simultaneously simulating a stitching along the margin of the band, may be carried out by a machine differing in construction from that shown in the drawing forming a part of this application, the present machine simply illustrating the process and means by which it may be commercially used.
Minor changes as to form and details of construction may be made within the scope of the invention as disclosed and therefore I do not wish to be limited in this matter as to such changes as may be made within the scope of the claims allowed.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new:
l. A machine of the character described comprising a two part casing, a wheel having a tread surface extending below the casing, a conduit for liquid formed in the casing and leading to the upper side of the wheel, a sealed removable container for liquid carried in and located above and leading to said conduit and wheel; means in the casing for puncturing the lower end of said container; the construction being such that the rotation of said wheel will carry said liquid from the upper side to the lower side thereof.
2. A machine of the character described comprising a casing, a serrated wheel carried by the casing and extending below the same, a conduit for liquid formed in the casing and leading to the upper side of said wheel, a removable container for liquid supported by the casing and discharging into said conduit in communication therewith; soft yielding material located above the wheel in contact with the tread surface thereof; the construction being such that the rotation of said wheel will confine the liquid to said serrations and carry it to the lower side of the wheel.

A machine of the character described comprising a casing formed in two parts held together in separable relation and having an annular slot formed therein, a serrulated wheel fitted to rotate in said slot with its lower end extending below said casing, a shaft for supporting said wheel, a conduit for liquid formed in said casing in open communication with the upper side of said wheel, a separate detachable vsealed container for liquid carried in the casing,
the lower end of which is located adjacent to the upper side of said wheel and means carried by the casing for puncturing the lower end of the container.
4. A machine of the character described comprising a casing formed in two parts held together in separable relation and formed to provide an annular slot between them, a serrulated wheel tted in said slot with its lower end extending below the casing, a shaft supporting said wheeland serving to hold the two casing portions together, a conduit for liquid formed in the casing above the wheel and leading to the serrulations therein, a sealed container for coloring matter located entirely above the wheel and arranged to discharge its contents into said conduit and means carried in a wall oi the casing for puncturing the lower end of the container.

A machine of the character described comprising a casing and formed to provide an annular slot, a serrulated wheel tted to rotate closely in said slot with its lower side extending below said casing, a shaft for supporting said wheel, a conduit for liquid formed in said casing in communication with the upper side of said wheel, a separate detachable container for liquid the lower end of which is sealed and located adjacent and entirely above the upper side of the wheel, means carried by the casing adapted to puncture the lower end of the container and means for conning a liquid flowing from said container closely in the serrulations of the wheel.

A machine for use as an attachment for a sewing machine having a presser-foot and feed mechanism, etc., said attachment comprising a presser-foot formed with an opening in the foot portion thru which the lower side of a wheel may extend, and having a shank portion extending upwardly therefrom formed to provide an opening therein, a casing having a lug portion extending into said opening, means for holding said lug in adjustable relation to permit the casing to move vertically relative to said shank portion.
7. The construction defined in claim 6, together with, a spring located between the casing and shank to effect a resilient yielding action between the casing and shank when pressure is applied to the under side of a wheel carried by the casing.

A machine of the character described comprising a presser-foot formed with an opening in the foot portion thru which a wheel may extend, `and having a shank portion extending upwardly therefrom and formed to provide an opening therethru, a casing having a lug portion which extends into said opening, means for holding said casing to said shank in adjustable relation therewith, a Wheel having a roughened tread surface carried by the casing and extending below the same and into the opening in the-foot' portion, a conduit for liquid leading to the upper side of said wheel, and a source of liquid supply in open communication with the tread of said wheel.

The construction defined in claim l, together with; said casing having a chamber formed therein into Which said Wheel projects, a vertically extending shaft supported in the casing and extending into said chamber, and a brush carried by said shaft and rotatable in contact with the tread of the Wheel to clean the same.
10. The construction defined in claim 1, to-
gether with; said casing having a cylindrical formation at its upper end adapted to hold a container, and a container resting in said cylinder with its lower end adjacent the bottom thereof.
11. A machine of the character described comprising a casing, a Wheel having a tread surface extending below the casing, a conduit for liquid formed in the casing and leading to the upper side of the wheel, a removable container for liquid carried by and located above and lead- K ing to said conduit and wheel; the construction being such that the rotation of said wheel Will carry said liquid from the upper side to the lower Aside thereof, and a rotatable brush carried in the casing in contact with the serrations in the wheel for cleaning the serrations.
