BRIEF OASE Filed March 12, 1938 WILLIAM SATZ INVENTOR BYE5 ATTORN EY Patented Nov. 28, 1939 PATENT OFFICE BRIEF OASE William Satz. New York. N. Y.
Applicatilm March 12,
' 4 Claims.
'I'his invention relates generally to movable handles for portfolios, cases articles of 111ggage and the like, but more specifically 130 apair of handles adapted to be s liclably and concealedly mounted on the outer surfaces of the main alls whereby the seid handles a1'e capable of being raised above the upper 11'mit 015 the said article and lowered below the upper limit of the seid article, depending upon the desire cf the owner.
The mein object of the invention resides in the provlsion of a pair of slidable handles, each being associated with the outer surface of a main Wall of the article of luggage, whereby the interior space is not diminished by the alfixation of the exert very little sliding friction against; the leather or non-metallic parts 01": the article of luggage.
A further object of the invei 1tion resides in the provision of a pair of handles as applied to an article of luggage wherein the leg portions of each of the seid handles cannot be flexed towarcl each other and wherein sliding, Without possibility of jarnming of the leg portions is ac complished by the association therewith of tracks.
A further objectof. the invention resides in the provision of slidable handles Whieh are readily applicable 130 the outer surfaces cf completed articles of luggage without tampering with the internal parts and without causing a thickening of the inner surfaces of the main Walls.
These objects and otherincidental ends and advancages of the invention will hereinafter appear in the progress of the disclosule and as pointed out in the appended claims.
Accomlaanying this specification is a drawing showing a preferred form of the invention'wherein corresponding reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout I7he several views and wherein:
Figure 1 is a front view in elevation showing one of the slidable handles in projected and operative position in association with a brief case,
one of the sheaths for one leg 0f the handle being cut away. 4 Figure 2 is a sectional view of Figure 1 along the plane 22 thereof. 1
Figure 3 is a front view inelevation showing the slidable mounting means between eachleg of a handle and a longitudinal intermediate slot cf a plate member therefor, the seid plate mem her showing a rivet passing through the lower end thereof, the sheath and outer Wall of the article of luggage being shown in phantom lines.
Figure 4 is a sectional view of Figure 3 through the plane 4-4 thereof.
said handles and whereby thehandles themselves was, Seria.l N0.'195,554
(GI. -'12) l In accordance with I:he invention and in aecordance witha preferred form thereof shown in the drawihg, a conventional briefcase er port- Toliols shown, having the usual inner computments such as lateral compartments I2and I3 and an inner compartment I4, the sai d compartments being formed by the front and rear Walls I0, and I I and two intermediate partitions' I5 and I6. The brief case'is providecl With othep comventional structural partssuch as a slidable fas 1 teuer ab the top Wall and bottom and end alls. The main front and rear walls I0 and I I on the outer surfaces thereofare each provided With Similar handle members, preferably of inverted U formation. Thus, each handle has legs I'I and I8, a transverse upper grip I9 and eyelets 20 and 2.I at the lower ends of the said legs.
Legs I1 and I8 of each handle are associated With platze members 22 and 23, preferably of metal, and each containing longitudinal and intermediate slots 24 and 25. The plate members 22 and 23 are provided with orifices 26 and 21 below the lower ends of the slots, the said orifices being used in conjunction With afiixing members suc has rivets to pivotally atfix the said plai- e members 22 and 23 to the outer surfaces cf Walls I0 and II, as will her'einafteramppear. Eyelets .20 and 2I and slots 24 and 25 are adapted to have passed therethrough fiared studs 28 and 29, whereby lege I'I and I8 are made to slidably engage with the plate membei*s 22 and 23 at the side wallsof the slots. v V
' Sheaths 32 and 33 are applied over the metallic plates22 and 23 whereby the said plates are concea led from view and whereby the legs of each handle in lowermost position are concealed fr0m vievv except for I5he transverse grip I9 which lies above the upper limit of sheaths 32 and 33, but below the upper limit of the brief case, The sheaths 32 and 33 are affixed to the 011ter surfaces of the main Walls of the brief case by any means such as lines of stitching 34 and35, the upper transverse edges of the said sheaths being left open so that legs I! and I8 0f each handle may slide upvvardly or downwardly therewithin along slots 24 and 25. Either before or after the sheaths are stitched into place, rivets 30 and 3I are secv.recl through the lower ends of sheaths 34 and 35, orifices 26 and 21 at the lower endshf plates 22 and 23 and the thickness of Walls I0 and II, as best shown in Figure 2. In this manner, rivets 30 and 3I plvotally secure plateS 22and 23 within th sheaths 34 and 35 and prevent the said platze members from linear displacement from within the sheaths 32 and 33. The rivets 30 and 3I, however, are secured in place only after sheaths 34 and are placed over the members 22 and 23 which have already been connected 120 legs I1 and 18 as above described.
It is to be observed that in the movemen'o of the handles about members 22 and 23, the rivets 30 and 31 and the slots 24 and 25 receive all the Stresses and strains. Neither the sheaths nur the outer surfaces of walls I0 and II of the brief case encounter appreciable sliding friction from the movable parts. Moreover, the unique coustruction in the slidable mounting between legs I! and I8 and members 22 and 23 prevent any possibility of jamming 0f the handles when either raised in operative position or lowered into irmperative position. The platze members 22 and 23 at the upper ends and above the upper limit of the slots 24 and 25 are preferably Offset as shown a1; 36 and. 37, whereby the handles, when raised their upper limiting position, c1ick into place. Each of the handles when raised to upper limiting position, together constitute a composite handle by virtue of the fact that the transverse grips I9 are fiexed togeoher by the band of the user.
I wish it understood that minor changes and modifications in the mounting, relative movements 0f the parts, material and location of all the paros, may all be resorted to without departing from Ehe spirit of the invention and without departing from the scope of the appended claims.
I C1aim: 1. In combination with the front and rear wa11s 013 an article of luggage, a pair 0f handles vertically disposed rigid. plates having elongated. tracks on which tracks the said handles are slidab1y mounted, sheaths secured to the front and rear Walls and superposing and concealing the said rigid plates, pivotal securing means on each of the lower ends of said plates, the said securing means being mounted on the said sheaths and Walls.
2. In combination With thefront and. rear walls of an article of luggage, a pair cf handles, each having two leg portions, a pair of elongated, cancealed and rigid track members in which the said leg portions are slidably mounted, means of pivotally securing the lower ends of said track members to the front and rear Walls 0f an article of luggage.
3. In combination With the front and. rear wa1ls of an artic1e ocE luggage, a pair of handles each having leg portions, mounting means in which each of the said leg portions are slidably engageabie and being situated on the outer surfaces of the said front and rear wa11s and pivotal securing means between the said mounting means at the lower ends thereof and the ou'ter surfaces of the said front and rear Walls.
4. In combination with ehe front and rear Walls 0f an article of luggage, a pair of handles each having leg portions, mounting means on each of the front and rear Walls in which the leg portions 0f each handle are s1idably mounted, and pivota] securing means between the lower ends of the mounting' means and each of the fr mt and rear Walls;
WILLIAM SATZ.
