NT OFFlCE I This invention relates to a tool kit or holder of the type comprisinga plurality of interchangeable operating elements such as socket members, punches, etc. adapted to be removably secured to a handle member.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a kit which is of simple design and of strong and durable construction and whichis designed securely to hold the interchangeable elements, handle, and other accessories in an orderly manner so that they may be quickly and easily replaced.
Further objects relate to various features of construction and will be apparent from a consideration of the following description and the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a tool kit constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation, with parts broken away and shown in section, of the tool kit shown in Fig. 1; v
Fig. 3 is a view showing a punch assembled with the handle; and
Fig. 4 is an elevation of one of the punch elements.
The embodiment chosen for illustration comprises a base member 10 (Fig. 2) adapted to rest on a bench or like support (not shown) and formed with openings adjacent to each end and a central opening in which is anchored the lower end of a threaded stud l2. At oposite ends the base member In is provided with upstanding posts M which are rigidly secured in position by screws l5 (Fig. 2) which pass through the openings in the ends of the base member. The posts I5 provide a support for a plate I6 which is rigidly anchored in position by screws I8 (Fig. 1).
The plate I5 is formed with a central opening 20 (Fig. 1) in vertical alignment with the stud l2 and a plurality of spaced openings 2! (Fig. 2) grouped in an orderly manner around the central opening 20, as shown in Fig. 1. The central opening 20 is designed to receive a handle member 25 (Fig. 3), here shown by Way of example as consisting of a tubular member having an exteriorly knurled upper end 26, a centrally disposed opening 21 through which punchings or the like may be discharged and an interiorly threaded lower end 28 (Fig. 2) by means of which punches or like operating elements may be removably secured thereto.
The openings 2| are provided with grommets 30 preferably composed of rubber or like inherently resilient material, the grommets being designed so as to receive and releasably retain a plurality of interchangeable operating elements such as punches 32 (Fig. 4) each consisting of a tubular cutter 33 having a pressed fit within a sleeve 34, one end of which is exteriorly threaded, as shown at 35, for attachment to the end 28 of the handle.
The ends 35 of the punches fit within the grommets 30 which yieldingly engage their threaded ends and thusreleasably retain them in position. The handle 25 fits within the opening 20 with its lower end in threaded engagement with the stud l2, thus being securely anchored in position.
It will be noted that in a tool kit constructed in accordance with the present invention, the handle 25 and each of the interchangeable operating elements or punches 32 are securely held in position in the kit or stand and that the handle may be easily removed and assembled with a selected punch, as illustrated in Fig. 3. The punches 32 may be quickly removed and replaced without special manipulation, since the rubber grommets have but a slight yielding engagement with their threaded ends 35, which is suflicient merely to hold them in position so that jolting, rough handling, or tipping over of the kit will not displace them.
While I have shown and described one desirable embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that this disclosure is for the purpose of illustration, and that various changes in shape, proportion, and arrangement of parts, as well as the substitution of equivalent elements for those herein shown and described, may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A tool kit for holding a plurality of interchangeable operating elements and a handle or the like to which said elements may be removably attached, comprising a base member adapted to rest upon a bench or the like, a supporting member in superposed spaced relation to said base member, said supporting member having an opening in which said handle may be inserted and a plurality of openings for the reception of said elements, and means associated with the latter openings for releasably retaining said elements therein.
2. A tool kit for holding a plurality of interchangeable operating elements and a handle or the like to which said elements may be removably attached, comprising a base member adapted to rest upon a bench or the like, a supporting member in superposed spaced relation to said base member, said supporting member having an opening in which said handle may be inserted and a plurality of openings for the reception of said elements, means associated with the latter openings for releasably retaining said elements therein, and means carried by said base member for securing said handle in position.
3. A tool kit for holding a plurality of interchangeable operating elements and a handle or the like to which said elements may be removably attached, comprising a supporting member having an opening in which said handle'may beinserted and a plurality of openings for the reception of said elements, and inherently resilient grommets disposed within the latter openings for releasably retaining said elements in position.
4. A tool kit for holding a'plurality of interchangeable operating elements and a handle or the like to which said elements may be'removably attached, comprising a base member adapted to rest upon a bench or the like, a supporting member in superposed spaced relation to said base member, said supporting member having a central opening in which said handle may be inserted and a plurality of spaced openings disposed about said central opening, and grommets of inherently resilient material disposed within the latter openings for releasably retaining said elements in position.
