SPELLING-BLOCK.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 21,798, dated October 12, 1858; Ressued March 26,

To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL L. I'IILL, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Spelling-Block; and I do hereby declare the t'ollowing to be a full and exact description o the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ot' this specification.

Figure I represents three sides of a block ot one set, in which are seen two letters of the alphabet (c, ZJ), and the numerical tigure. Fig. II shows the remaining three sides ot the same block, with three other letters ot' the alphabet, (d, e, f). Fig. III. The nature ot my invention consists in preparing a series ot' wooden blocks, of any required number each block having placed upon it certain letters ot the alphabet, tor the purpose of spelling.

The object ot my intention. is to place in the hands of children a uset'ul and instruct.- ing recreation. Y

To enable others to makeand use my inyention I will proceed todescribe it.

I provide a series of six-sided wooden blocks; these blocksfare divided into two sets, distinguished trom each other by color. The blocks in each set are numbered l, 2, 3, 41, 5, G, 7, 8, 9, 0 respectively, and when more blocks are used, as is sometimes the case, the numbers are increased in proportion. On tive sides of each block, tive letters of the alphabet are placed, care being taken that the same letter shall not occur twice on the same block, and on the sixth side, the numerical figure first referred to. The numerical figure serves by the aid of the printed key, to show on what block any desired letter or letters will be found. The set of blocks being thus formed and reference being had to the printed key and numerical figure, it will be found that words can .be readily spelled, and those in which the same letter occurs twice which was not done and could not be done with the old style of blocks or those now in use. Thus the word dog` could be spelled with the old style, but the word goose or any other word in which the same letter occurred twice could not be. structing the blocks. decidedly superior to the old style, in which the letters were rst printed on paper and then pasted upon the block, thus rendering them easy to be torn ott and destroyed, whereas by the mode I employ, otl placing the letters directly upon the l lcck itselt, by painting them upon it, this is guarded against.

I'Iaying thus described my invention what I consider as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent isl. I claim the arrangement of letters on any number of six sided blocks, in the manner described and tor the purpose specified.

2. I claim giving to and placing upon each block its proper numerical figure, for the purpose specified.
