ENID IBEAUPBE, OF ALBANY; NEW YORK.
- GAME APPARATUS.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,'ENID BnAUPmi, a citiaen of the United States, residing at Albany, 111 the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented new anduseful Improvements in Game Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
Theobject of my present invention is the provision of a game apparatus that is calculated to afford amusement to a child, and at the same time is possessed. of educational value because of its capacity to impress upon the childs' mind an understanding of the elements of music as well as the relation of notes to the key-board of a piano. To the attainment of the foregoin the invention consists in the peculiar and advantageous game apparatus hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In theaccompanying drawings, forming part hereof. v
Figure 1 is a perspective showing my novel apparatus as the same appears when closed.
2 is a transverse section taken through the closed apparatus.
Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the apparatus as it appears when opened and superimposed for useupon a table or other support.
Fig. 4 is a detail section taken through one of the note-representing figures and the wall by which the said figures are carried, said section being in a plane indicated by the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken in the plane indicated by the line 5-5 of Fig. 3, and showing the removable arrangement of the key-representing members in the casing comprised in the invention.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
The casing that forms part of my novel apparatus is made up of a box-like section 1 and a box-like section 2, the said sections be- .ing hinged together at 3 so that the section 2 may be swung on and off the section 1, and also so that the two sections may be arranged in alinement and flush each with the other, as shown in Fig. 3 when the apparatus is to be used. Manifestly when desired a fastener 4, such as shown in Figs. 13, may be employed, detachably connecting the outer edges of the sections 1 and 2, so that v p fic i n -c cr Patented July13 1920. Application filed July 18, 1919. Serial No. 311,835.
the apparatus may be conveniently carried in its'closed state. i
The section 2 is provided with a wall 5 that 1s spaced from the main wall 6 of the section as shown. On the face of the said wall 5 is provided a musical scale 7 comprislng the usual five lines and four spaces, and formed'in said wall 5 and intersecting the lines ofthe scale 7 and disposed at right angles to said lines are slots 8. Also on the blackened, as' illustrated, to simulate halftone keys, and in the section 1 at intervals in the length thereof are removable portions spaced apart and also blackened to simulate half-tone keys, as indicated by 10. Removably arranged inthe section 1-andhaving reduced portions disposed between the semitone key portions are white members 11 which havefortheir function to simulate the white or full't'one keys of a piano key-board. I would have it understood here that the removable portions 10 are preferably arranged so as to-extend above the plane of the removable portions 11, Fig. 2, so as to better simulate the key-board of a piano. I v Movable in the slots 8 of the section 2 are note-representing fi ures 12. These figures 12 have shanks 13,Fig. 4, and also have suitable retaining means on the inner portions of the said shanks, whereby there is no liability of the figures 12 being disconnected from the wall 5, and yet any one of the said figures may be moved to the position desired on the scale representation 7.
, At the left of the slots 8 in the wall 5.is a slot 8 positioned to permit for the sliding of the two conventional clef signs, one above the other, so that the staff may be read in either clef to enable a child to learn the bass as well as the treble notation. Between the location of the clefs and the slots 8 is afforded space for the signature of the different major scales, it being understood in this connection that I refer to emplo six flat signs, and six sharp signs an one natural sign, printed on card-board or other flat strips, susceptible of being easily handled, and adapted when the game is not in use to be packed at the left-hand side of the section 1. WVhen deemed. expedient, the section 1 may be provided at the left with a receptacle having a black hinged cover 8, and in which the six flats, six sharps and one natural sign strips S may be kept when not in use, Fig. 5.
In the practical use of my game apparatus the insertion and removal of the white keyre n'esenting members ll, and the man1pulation of the note-representing figures 12 are calculated to afford amusement to a child and to excite the interest of the child. This is particularly true when the child is advanced enough to grasp the rudiments of music, for then the child may be taught with the assistance of the apparatus to place the figure 12 opposite each of the letters of the scale 011 the scale line or in the scale space corresponding to the particular letter opposite the figure 12. It will further be appreciated. that when all of the key-representing members 10 and 11, are removed from the casing section 1, a child may be amused and at the same time educated by being called upon to position one of the keys 'at the proper place in the section 1 corresponding to the position of one of the figures 12 that has previously been positioned relatively to the scale 7 Manifestly myno'vel device may be inexpensively manufactured of wood, and sold with profit for a small price.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. A game apparatus comprising a casing having two box-like sections hinged together, one of the said sections being provided with a wall in which are slots extending at right angles to the length of the wall and being also provided on its face with a musical scale the lines and spaces of which are intersected by said slots, and the other section being provided with end walls and. with removable intermediate spaced portions blackened to simulate the half-tone keys of a piano key-board, and one of the sections being provided with the letters of the scale, in regular sequence, figures retained and movable in the said slots, and members removably arranged in the lastnamed section and having reduced portions adapted to be interposed between the halftone key-representingmembers.
2. A game apparatus comprising a casing having box-like sections hinged together and also having a wall in one of said sections, said wall provided with slots extending at right angles to the length of the wall and. also having a slot at the left of the series of the first-named slots, figures removably retained and movable in the first-named slots, figures adapted to be alternately arranged removably in the second-named slot, a space at the right of the second-named slot for signature-inclicating strips, the said signature-indicating strips adapted for alternate use in said space, spaced removable portions carried in the other section, and members removably arranged side by side in said section and having reduced portions adapted to be positioned in lapped relation to the first-named portions.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
