UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
LOUIS A. BRINGIER, OF ASOENSION PARISH, LOUISIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN- BACK-BANDS FOR PLOW-HARNESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 217,983, dated July 29, 1879; application filed May 13, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS A. BRINGIER, of the parish of Ascension and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Back-Band for Plow-Harnesses, of which the following is a specification.
Back-bands as heretofore used consist of a canvas strap that goes over the back of the horse, provided at its ends with hooks to engage the trace-chain and support the same intermediately of the hames and whiffletree. The canvas soon rots, and, besides that, the hooks very frequently become detached from the trace, and cause delay, annoyance, and loss of time.
The invention consists in a connecting device of peculiar form for holding the traces and preventing their detachment.
I11 the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improved back-band. Fig. 2 is a side View. Fig. 3 represents the device for connecting the trace, with the parts separated to show them more clearly.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
a is a wide strap of leather, to the ends of which are attached pads 12 b, preferably of Wood. These pads I) take the weight and prevent the strap from slipping or gallin g the animals back, and these parts form a saddle, from which, at opposite sides, the chains 0 c are suspended by eyes attached to the pads.
To the lower end of each chain c is a ring,
01, and on each ring d two wire loops, 0 e, are hung.
On each ring d, between the loops 0 e, a straight pin, f, is hung by an eye formed in its upper end. These pins f extend slightly below the loops c.
When the back-band is in use the tracechains will pass through the loops 0, and be thereby held up. The pin f on each chain 0 will pass through one link of the trace and prevent the trace from slipping through the loops, so that the trace will be securely held, with no liability of detachment, as is the case when hooks are used.
The device permits ready disconnection and adjustment of the traces.
This device is simple, effective for its intended purposes, and the whole apparatus is a durable and convenient back-band.
The pad may be fitted with a hook at each side, as shown at i, for shortening the chains when required.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with the trace-supports c, of loops cc and pins f, as and for the purposes described.
LOUIS AM'EDEE BRINGIER.
