Description

H. ROLNICK @et 3 l, 1939.
HAT BAND Filed DeC. 17, 1938 .Patented Oct. 31, 1939 UNI-TED STATES PATENT OFFICE HAT BAND Harry Rolnlck, Dallas, Tex. Application December 17, 1938, Serial No.l 246,473
3 Claims.
This invention relates to hat bands and the object is to provide an improved hat band which will protect the hat proper from perspiration.
Where the hat band is secured directly to the hat perspiration will seep through' the holes of the stitching securing the band to the hat and discolor the hat even before there is any noticeable seepage or permeation through the hat band itself. By the improved construction hereinafter descriped such seepage is prevented and the hat eiectively protected from perspiration.
The invention consists in the novel construction, arrangment, and combinations of parts hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.
One sheet of drawings accompanies'this specication as part thereof, in which like reference characters indicate like parts throughout.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a vertical cross section taken through a hat, with an improved hat band applied;
Figure 2 is a perspective fragmentary view of an improved hat band as assembled prior to attachment to a hat; and
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical cross section illustrating the improved hat band attached to a hat.
in accordance with the present invention the hat band comprises a head contacting strip of leather l, to which is secured a strip oi water resistant material 2, such as oil silk, Cellophane, or the like, positioned over the finished or inner face of the hat band, as it will be positioned in the hat, and a second attachment strip 3 which may, if desired, also be of water resistant material but of sucient strength to provide a rm anchoring member for holding the hat band in position in a hat.
The attachment strip 3 is folded longitudinally upon itself and this fold may be emphasized, if desired, by inserting a cord 8 at the fold. The head contacting strip l, water resistant strip 2, and attachment strip 3 are secure together by a line of stitching extending adjacent the edges o' the water resistant strip and head contacting strip, and adjacent the fold 4 of the attachment strip 3.
I n positioning the improved hat band in a hat the water resistant strip 2 is folded over the edge of attachment and associated with the outermost fold 5 of the attachment strip 3. The strips 2 and 5 are then secured to the hat H by a line of stitching l, which is positioned in spaced relationship to the line of stitching S when the hat band is folded into the hat as illustrated in Figure 3.
From the construction and arrangement as v thus described it will be apparent that moisture from the forehead of the wearer is repelled in the first instance by the water resistant strip 2 where folded over the edges of the other strips and that any moisture which might permeate strip 2, if it succeeded in passing through the holes of stitching 6 would still have to creep a substantial distance upwards to reach the line of stitching l and thus gain access to the hat proper H.
Various modifications in the material selected will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art.
Having thus fully described my invention I aim:
1. In combination, a hat, a hat band comprising a head contacting strip interposed between a folded attachment strip and a strip of water resistant material by a line of stitching passing through said strips adjacent the fold line of the attachment strip and adjacent edges of the other two strips, said hat band positioned in the hat with the water resistant strip folded on itself around the edge of the head contacting strip and over. the attachment strip and secured in the hat by a second line of stitching passing through the hat, one thickness of the attachment strip and the water resistant stitching spaced from stitching.
2. An improved hat band comprising a head contacting strip, an attachment strip folded lengthwise upon itself and a strip of water resistant material said strips arranged with the head contacting strip intermediate, the other strips with the fold of the attachment strip adjacent an edge of the head contacting strip, said strips secured by `a line of stitching passing through both thicm'iesses of the attachment strip, the head contacting strip, and the water resistant strip adjacent the folded edge of the attachment strip and adjacent edges of the other two strips.
3. In combination, a hat, a hat band comprising a head contacting strip associated with a folded attachment strip on one face and a strip of water resistant material on the other face, said strips secured together by a line of stitching passing through said strips, adjacent the fold line of the attachment strip and adjacent edges of the other two strips, said hat band secured in the hat with the water resistant strip folded around the edge of the head contacting strip by a second line of stitching passing through the hat, one thickness of the attachment strip, and the water resistant strip.
said rst mentioned line of HARRY ROLNICK.
