This invention relates to improvements in swatch exhibits; and it comprises a folder in which a swatch assembly is enclosed so that it mey be conveniently carried about in the pocket without danger ofinjury thereto and may be conveniently exhibited ywhen occasion requires, said folder comprising iront and back leaves provided with complementary fastening means whereby they may be interlocked in either a swatch enclosing or a swatch exhibiting relation.

The invention also comprises a background or mounting member constructed so that the swatch may be readily attached thereto, for exhibition or filing purposes, by'means of a tab formed by interlocking the folder leaves in their swatch exhibiting relation. f

In these drawings we have shown a conventional swatch comprising paper samples 5 arranged, in the usual shingled relation, on a relatively stiff cardboard or other suitable backing 6. This swatch assembly is secured within a folder comprising a sheetof flexible cardboard or other suitable exing material folded upon itself to provide iront and back leaves l and 8 having their upper edges integrally joined by a portion 9 1938, Serial No. 194,356 (c1. s-82') overlying the upper edge of the swatch assembly. In the present instance we have shown these parts secured together by staples i3 located ay suitable distance below the upper edge of the folder. Leaf l is creased', below the staples I3, to provide transversely extending fold lines l5, i6 and il. The intermediate line i6 is spaced below the upper line l5 a distance corresponding approximately to the distance between line i5 and the upper edge of the folder. The lower line Il is spaced from the intermediate line l5 a distance corresponding approximately to the thickness of the swatch assembly plus the thicknesses of the front and back folder leaves 'l and 8.

When the front and back folder leaves l and 8 are interlocked, as shown in Figs. l to 3 inclusive, the swatch assembly is adequately protected and may be conveniently carried about in the pocket without danger of injury. When the swatch is to be exhibited, tongue ila (Fig. 2) is withdrawn from slot l2 and the front folder cover 'l is folded' along the fold lines i5, if@ and I'i to assume the position shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6. Leaf 'l is then secured in -this swatch exhibiting position by again passing tongue 9ct` through slot I2 as shown more particularly in Figs. 5 and 6.

Forexhibition mounting or filing purposes it is sometimes desirable to provide a background or mounting member to which the swatch may be conveniently attached. To this end the present invention contemplates the provision of a background or mounting member of the type exemplied in Figs. 7 and 8. As here shown this member I8 consists of a sheet of dark colored cardboard or other suitable stiff material folded upon itself to provide front and back portions i9 and 2B which are secured together, at the edges opposite the fold line 2|, by staples 22 or other suitable fastening means. The front member l5 is provided with a slot 23.` When folder leaves 1 and 8 are interlocked as shown in Fig. 6, they form a tab which, as shown in Fig. 8, may be passed through slot 23 into the space provided between the front and back portions I9 and 20 of the background or mounting member I8. When the resulting assembly is used for display purposes the dark color of member I8 affords a desirable background against which the various sample sheets 5 may be effectively exhibited.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim is:

1. A device of the character described comprising a pad of sample sheets arranged in shingled relation so that the lower edge of each sheet is spaced above the lower edge of the next upper sheet, front and back protecting leaves having their upper portions secured to the upper portion of the pad, said front leaf being extended to provide an extension capable of being folded over the lower edge of the pad to overlie the lower portion of the rear leaf and means for securing said extension in such folded position, said device being further characterized in that the front leaf is creased, below its point of attachment to the upper portion of the pad, to permit said leaf to be folded over the upper edge of the pad to a pad exhibiting position in which the front leaf overlies the rear surface of the back leaf, the extension of the front leaf being, in this position of said leaves, secured in place by the previously mentioned securing means.

2. A device of the character described, comprising a pad of sample sheets arranged in shingled relation so that the lower edge of each sheet is spaced above the corresponding edge of the next upper sheet, a folder comprising front and back protecting leaves having their upper edges integrally joined together by a connecting portion overlying the upper edge of the pad and means fastening the upper portions of said front and back leaves to the upper portion of the pad,

said device being further characterized in that the front leaf is provided, below the portion attached to the pad, with upper, intermediate and lower transverse fold lines, the intermediate fold line being spaced from the upper fold line a distance corresponding closely to the distance between the upper fold line and the upper edge of the front leaf and said lower fold line being spaced from the intermediate fold line a distance corresponding closely to the thickness of the pad plus the thickness of the front and back leaves.

3. A device as set forth in claim 2, in which the front leaf is made longer than the pad to provide an extension capable of being folded around the lower edge of the pad to overlie the lower portion of the back leaf, and means for securing said extension in such folded position.

4. A device of the character described comprising a pad of sample sheets arranged in shingled relation so that the lower edge of each sheet is spaced above the lower edge of the next lower sheet, front and back protecting leaves covering the front and back portions of said pad, means fastening the upper portion of the pad to the overlying upper portions of said leaves, said front leaf being provided, below said fastening means, with transverse fold lines along which the front leaf may be folded to a sample exhibiting position in which the front leaf @verlies the upper edge of the pad and the rear side of the back leaf, and means for securing the front leaf in such folded position.

5. A device as set forth in claim 4, in which the front and back leaves are provided with interlocking parts for securing the front leaf in place when the latter is folded to its pad exhibiting position.
