This application is a continuation in part of my previously filed application, Serial No. 718,712, led'April 2, 1934.
This invention relates to improvements in door fastening means, and .refers speciiically to the provision of a door fastening device, particularly adapted for automobile doors and the like, wherein the handle or knob which actuates the fastening mechanism is rendered inaccessible when the device is in locked position. One of the important objects oi my inventionA is the provision of simple means by which the handle of a door, such for example as an automobile door, may be protected against damage either by Ibeing 4struck by some other object or twisted intentionallyin an eiort to open the door. p
Also, another feature of'the invention is to provide a Adoor fastening means which may be incorporated in a door of conventional constructionand adapted to the existing lock without material change in these parts,V or departure from established practice.
Another object of the invention is to provide a structure of the class described which is of highly simpliiied construction, durable in use and comparatively economical to manufacture.

The locking mechanism comprising my invention may 'be carried in substantially its entirety upon plate 8 which may have a portion l bent at an angle to the main part of the plate. An aperture 8 may be provided in plate 6 and a collar y 9 may be loosely positioned in said aperture. A' retainingstrip I II'may be secured to plate 6 and the bent extension thereof I as shown respectively at II and I2 in Fig. 3, said strip being adapted to prevent the accidental displacement of collar 9 from aperture 8.
A pin I3 having a square or other polygonal cross section may be positioned in` an opening provided in collar 9, said opening being of similar cross section to that of the pin. A portion of pin I3 vmay extend beyond the end of collar 9 and may project outwardly from plate 6, said portion being undercut or provided with an annular recess I4. A lug I5, Fig. 9, having bifurcated arms I l may be adapted to secure pin I3 in de- Y sired position, said arms preventing longitudinal motion oi pin I3. Lug I5 may be secured to the face of plate 6 by means of screw I1 or the like.
Handle I may be integrally attached to spindle E I8, which may be provided with a longitudinal bore I9 of similar cross section to that oi pin I2. As will be hereinattenmore fully described. spindle I 8 is slidably movable upon pin I2 whereby handle i may be positioned either in its advance position. as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3. or in its locked position, wherein the entire handle may be disposed in recess 20 provided in the outer panel 2| of door 2. A lug '22' may be mounted upon the bent plate 'I and may carry an outwardly projecting portion 24. A cylindrical collar 25 having an end of reduced diameter 2B may be positioned within an aperture provided in the extension 24. When the reduced portion 26 of collar 25 is, positioned within said aperture, the end thereof may be flared outwardly sc as to rigidly secure collar 26 and the extension 24. Collar 25 may function as a. support or guide for. spindle IB in its movements hereinbefore described.

member 28 may be sldablymounted upon plate 6, said plate being provided with slot 29 in which tion parallel to the length of slot 29. One end of member 28 may comprise latch 3l which is adapted to register with keeper 32, formed in the face plate 33 of the door frame 34. A juxtaposed .portion of member 28 may be positioned adjecent the end of arm 21, the relation being such that when arm 21 is rocked, as hereinbefore described, member 28 Will be slidably moved, whereby latch 3| may be retracted-from keeper 32. A coil spring 35 or other resilient member may operatively secure member 28 and plate 6 wherebylatch 3l will be resiliently impelled into registration with keeper 32. When arm 21 moves member 28 so asto retract latch 3|, member 28 will be moved against the tension of spring 35.
The inner end of spindle I8 may be provided with an annular groove 36, a notch-31 may connect said groove to the end of said spindle. On the side of the spindle diametrically opposite notch 31, said spindle may be provided with a longitudinal groove 38. A pin 39 may be mounted upon collar 25, and may project inwardly into groove 38. v
To assemble the parts hereinbefore described, pin I3 may first be positioned within recess I9 in spindle I8. The spindle and the pin may then be inserted into collar 25, the position of handle being such that slot 31 registers with pin 39. In this manner pin 39 may be brought into the annular groove 36 and handle 5 may be rotated through an angle of 180 until pin 39 lies at the end of the longitudinal groove 38. Spindle I8 may then be moved inwardly through collar 25, pin 39 being positioned in groove 38. When spindle I8 has been pushed inwardly until handle 5 abuts the base of recess 28, the end of pin I3 will project beyond plate 6 and lug I5 may be utilized to anchor the pin in the position shown in Fig. 3. Prior, however, to inserting spindle I8 and pin I3 into collar 25, a coil spring 48 may be positioned upon pin I3, said springbeing so constructed as to be under compression when spindle I8 is in locked position and, consequently,'said spring tends to impel handle 5 out"of the recess 28 when the device is unlocked, as will be hereinafter described. f
The strip II for retaining collar -9 in position may be provided at its end with an upwardly extending integral ange 4|.' A lug '42 may be secured to the face of plate 6 as by screws 43 or the like and may also be provided with an upwardly extending flange 44 in a plane parallel to flange 4|. Both lianges 4I and 44 may be provided with apertures through which bar 45 may extend. An end 46 of b'ar 45 may havelan arcuateshaped edge and may comprise a detent which is engageablewith spindle I8, the edge of said detentv being registerable with the annular groove v36 when the device is in locked position. A spring 41 may be positioned between detent 46 and iiange 4| and may normally impel said detent toward spindle I8. e
Lock 4 may comprise a barrel 48 which may .be positioned inan aperture provided in lug 49,
which latter is secured to the bent plate 1 by means of screw 58 or the like. Pin 5I may project from the end of barrel 48 and may carry at.
locked position by pushing handle 5 inwardly toward recess 28. In this position spring 48 is compressed as shown best in Fig. 6 and detent 46 impelled by spring 41 engages with the end of spindle I8.` In this manner, spindle I8 will be 5 retained in its innermost position by means of bar 45. As can readily be seen, latch 3|, in this position, will be in engagement with keeper 32 and the door cannot be opened. l
When it is desired to open door 2 the key may be inserted in lock 4 and barrel 48 may rotate thereby rocking arm 52. Said arm when rocked contacts pin 53 and moves bar 45 in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1. When the bar is so moved, detent 46 is removed from engagement in groove 36 and, consequently, spindle I8 is urged to its advanced position by means of spring 48 as shown best in Mg. '1. In thisposition pin 39 registers with the annular groove 36 and handle 5 may be turned thereby rocking arm 21 mounted upon collar 9 and retracting latch 3|.
It is to be understood that the mechanism comprising lck 4 may be of conventional construction and, consequently, said mechanism is not shown in detail. Said mechanism may be such that arm 52 can be manually .rocked in either direction in which case it would be necessary to' turn the key in the lock either to lock the door or unlock it. If desired, however, the mechanism of lock 4 may be such that arm 62 will spring back to its original position when the force applied to the key is removed, permitting bar 45 to be moved to its original#A position after it has been shifted to remove the detent 46 yfrom groove 36. In this case when lock 4 is actuated to shift the detent inthe direction as shown by the arrow in Fig. 7, and the force applied to said key is removed, the detent will return to its original position. In either case, after bar has beenv f 28, which action results in the engagement of detent 46 in groove 36.
It can readily be seen that, when spindle I8 vreaches its outermost position, pin 39 engages with the outer deiining edge of groove a36 thereby preventing further outward motion of the spindle I8 and handle 5.
A plate 54 may be positioned adjacent the inner panel of door 2 and may carry spindle 55 upon which handle 56 may be mounted. Spindle 55V may be journalled in plate 54 and also in the spaced plate 51 which may be mounted upon the -inner face of plate 54. A collar 58 may be rigidly positioned upon spindle 55 and may carry an integrally attached arm 59, said collar being positioned upon shaft 55 between plates 54 and 51. A notch 68 may be provided in the edge of collar 58 and a'leaf spring 6I may bear against the surface of said collar, whereby when handle b56 is rocked, to disengage latch 3| from keeper 32, as will be hereinafter more fully described, spring 6I will return the handle 56 to its original position after the rotating force has been relieved. A link 62 may be pivotally. connected at one end to the end of arm 59, said link being provided with an elongated slot 63 at its opposite end. A pin 64 may be mounted upon extension 65 of member 28, said pir being positioned inlslot 63.
The arrangement is such that regardless of Vthe operative relationship of the key operated mechanism comprising lock 4, bar 45spindle I8, etc., latch 3| may be disengaged from keeper 32 by rocking handle 56. lvlol'eovcr,4 by the provision 75 of the lost motion connection comprising slot 03 and pin Il, member 28 may be moved to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4 without in any way disturbing the position of handle 5I.
A lug 66' may be mounted upon plate 6 by means'of screw 61 or the like, said lug having an outwardly extending flange 6l. Flange 68 may be provided with anaperture through which bar 69 may pass. One end of .bar l! may be bent as shown best at 1l in Fig, 4, the bent end being positioned adjacent link 62 between spaced pins y 1I and 12 mounted upon said link. 'Ihe opposite end of-bar 69 may be provided with a recess 13 y vthrough which bar may be positioned. A pin 14 may be positioned upon bar 45 adjacent bar 69, -bar 69 being disposed between pin 14 and the outer face of flange 4|. The end of bar 69 may be tapered so as to form a cam surface 1i.
l yIn operation when handle 50 is rocked to move 20 latch Il outwardly from vkeeper 32, pin 1| carried by link 62 contacts the bent end 1I of bar 6l and moves said baiin the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 4. Upon this movement taking place the inclined cam surface 15 contacts pin 25 14 and moves bar l5 against the compressive force of spring I1 thereby disengaging detent from groove 3i and releasing spindle Il permit- -ting outward movement thereof.
By this construction door 2 may be securely 30 locked as approached from the outside of the v automobile. that is,handle l may be positioned within recess 20, vbut movement of the inside handle I6 will release handle land permit it to spring to its outermost position. However, as
f 35 soon as the force rocking handle I6 has been removed, spring il returns handle 56 to its original position and, consequently, pin 12 contacts the bent end of bar thereby permitting detent 4I to be positioned in its normal locking 4@ position. However. at this phase of the operation spindle Il is in its outermost position. .Hence, when the passenger or driver steps from the car and closes door 2, the detent is in position to. receive groove 36 merely by the action of push- 45 lring handle I into recess 2l.
As pointed. out hereinbetore my invention is particularly adaptable for automobile doors but broadly its use is contemplated wherever the features thereof would bedesirableln latching 50 constructions.
I claim as my invention:
1. A door lock having a latch bolt,.an outer andan inner handle, said outer handle having a rotatable spindle and a tubular stem contractible lengthwise of the spindle, a trigger latch for holding the tubular stem in contracted position, a slide bar connecting the latch bolt and the inner handle, and means contacting said slide bar as the inner handle is turned in one direction for releasing the\trigger latch and for permitting the return of the tu ular stem to dispose the outer handle in operative position.
2. A door lock having a latch bolt, amouter and an inner handle, said outer handle having associated therewith a rotatable solid spindle and a tubular stem contractible lengthwise of the spindle, a trigger latch fOrengaging the tubular stem and holding the same in contracted position, a slide bar connecting the latch bolt and the inner handle, and means contacting said slide bar as the inner handle is turned in onedirection for releasing the trigger latch and for permitting the return of the tubular stem to dispose the outer handle in operative position.
3. A door lock having a latch bolt, an outer and an inner handle, said outer handle having a rotatable spindle and a tubular stem contractible lengthwise of the spindle, a trigger latch for holding the tubular stem in contracted position, means operatively connecting the latch bolt and the inner handle to retract the latch bolt when the inner handle is turned in oneI direction, and means actuated by said turning movement of the inner handle for releasing the trigger latch and for permitting the return of the tubular stem to dispose the outer handle in operative position.
4. A door lock comprising a frame, a latch bolt slidably positioned in said frame, an outer handle for the door journaled in said frame, said outer handle having a rotatable spindle and a tubular stem contractible lengthwise of the spindle, -a trigger latch for holding the tubular stem in contracted position, an inner handle for the door, and means operatively connecting said inner handle and said trigger latch to release the trigger latch when the inner handle is turned for permitting the return of the tubular stem to dispose the outer handle in operative position.
