Another object of my invention is to provide a device as characterized hereinbeiore the major part of which will be hidden from view and only a comparatively small portion will be exposed l on the outside of the article in question, the exposed portion being adapted to add to the artistic appearance oi the object to which my invention has been applied.

Referring now to the drawing more closely by characters of reference, the'numeral'lfl indicates a ladys hand bag in general, having a right hand wall ii and a lefthand wall l2 made of any appropriate material such as textile fabric. Beads it and it are formed along the upper edges of said walls by any appropriate method well known in the art, said beads forming the edges of the opening or the hand bag.
In my invention 1 provide a plurality of reverseiy curved or S-shaped sliding clips, generally indicated by the numeral l5, encircling the beads l4 and I 3 in the manner indicated in Figs. 4 and 5, and being slidable therealong. That portion of the clip between the two gripping or encircling portions constitutes an intermediate integrating portion which cooperates with each arcuate portion to grip the beads respectively on opposite sides of the integrating portion. It is to be noted that the arcuate gripping portions open substantially toward one another.
It is obvious that those portions of the beads i3 and it which are embraced by S-shaped clp it will be brought into close proximity to one another, completely overlapping to form a nesting or interlocking eiiect, and will thereby completely close the opening of the hand bag by overlapping the material adjacent thereto, as indicated in all the figures. If the clips it are pushed to one side, sliding along the beads it and 65, that portion of the beads freed from the clips it will be released, permitting the material to be spread apart and the bag opened.
Approximately one-half of the s-shaped clip It and only one of the heads will be exposed; in this case the portion indicated by the numeral I6 and the outer head It. The inner half of the S-shaped clip I5 indicated by the numeral ii, and the head I 3 will be hidden from view.
The exposed half is of the bead terminates with a somewhat outwardly curved portion is snugly but slidably engaging the wall f it of the head It, while the inner half ll of the S-shaped clip terminates in a circular loop of ring it riding on the portion 20 of the other wall ii of the hand bag adjacent to the bead it.
A flexible cord, chain or other connecting element It, may be threaded through the rings IQ of the various clips i5, said rings being pressed thereon in such a manner that the clips it will be secured on the flexible element 2i, preferably equi-distantly.
As it is also usual with such sliding clips, the clip at the one end of said flexible member 2i, and of the opening for the bag, will be permanently and not movably secured on the respective bands, whilethe clip at the other end will be slidable and preferably will be provided with a grip or catch device, indicated by the numeral 22.
When it is desired to open the hand bag, the last slidable clip will be grasped by the device 22, and will be pushed towards the fixed clip at the opposite end of the opening of the bag as indicated by the arrow 23, while when it is desiredto close the bag the said last sliding clip will be grasped by the device 22 and pulled toproximately through the ends of the two bead-.- gripping portions of the S-shaped clips passesbetween the overlapped beads and through the overlapping material adjacent thereto. By this arrangement the pull exerted on each clip by the spacer element when closing the opening is at a point centrally disposed with reference to the beads along .which the clips s1ide.- Binding of a the clips on the beads is thereby prevented and a very easy 'closing is insured.
When it is desired, the arrangement of the clips in'relation to the flexible member 2| and to the bag may be the reverse, the flexible member 2| being on the outside of the bag. This does not require any change in the construction and operation, merely a reversal of the position of the parts, and it may be used in case bags may be desired to be manufactured with ornamental chains or cords showing on their outsides, along their openings.
It also will be understood that the member- 22 by which the last movable clip may be grasped and operated, may be of many other forms as I that shown at 22, and such handling or grasping members 22 may be of separate pieces suitably shaped, ornamented, and secured onthe respective sliding clip.
While throughout the specification and claims the term arcuate has been used to describe the contour of the gripping portions of the clip, it
should be understood that this term is intended to embrace structures wherein the contour of each gripping portion is "generally arcuate," and not necessarily a continuous curve. It is obvious that a series of straight portions enclosing successive wide angles might be used in lieu of continuous curves to form substantially the same structure for performing precisely the same functions.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I want it rights to such changes and variations as are to be understood that changes and variations may be made in the construction andcombination of the parts, and I want to reserve my within the spirit of this specification, :and the .scope of the claims hereunto appended.
What I claim as new, is: r
1. A slide fastener assembly for closing an opening having flexible beads extending along the edges thereof, comprising a series of clips having adjacent generally arcuate gripping portions of reverse curvature joined by a central integrating portion, the outer side of each arcuate gripping portion terminating, at a point substantially central 'with reference to the central integrating portion, and a flexible spacer element secured at spaced intervals along its. length to each clip adjacent the extremity of an arcuate gripping portion.
2. A slide fastener assembly for closing an opening having "flexible beads extending along the edges thereof, comprising a series of clips: having adjacent generally arcuate gripping portions of reverse curvature joined by a central integrating portion, the outer side of each arcuate gripping portion terminating at a point substantially central with reference to the central integrating portion, a flexible spacer element secured at spaced intervals along its length to ,each clip adjacent the extremity of an arcuate tively on opposite sides of the integrating portion to thereby force said beads and the material immediately adjacent thereto into overlapped relation and maintain the beads in nested relationship when the opening isclosed, each clip including at the extremity of each arcuate gripping portion an additional reversely curved por- I tion cooperable with another portion of the clip to slidably receive and guide the material adjacent the respective beads.

A clip for a slide fastener assembly adapted to embrace beads extending along adjacent edges of material comprising adjacent generally arcuate gripping portions of reverse curvature joined by a central integrating portion, the outer side of each gripping portion terminating at a point substantially central with reference to the central integrating portion, and a guide portion at the end of each gripping portion cooperable with another portion of the clip to slidably receive and guide the material adjacent the respective beads.
