IMPROVEMENT IN BEDS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 217,632, dated July 15, 1879; application filed December 20, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES L. MoKEEvER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Bed, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is applicable to beds of all kinds, but it is more particularly adapted to cots or portable beds.

The invention consists in a bed or cot having parallel sides and rounded ends, and in a hinged coyer of wire or other netting supported by a frame which is similar in form to the frame of the bed.

The object of the invention is to construct a light strong bed having a protective covering of wire-netting to be used in hospitals and sick rooms for the protection of patients against flies and other insects. It is also in tended for use as an outdoor bed in warm countries.

Referring to the drawings, A is the frame of the bed, which is composed of two bent pieces, B B. forming the semicircular ends, and the straight pieces 0 O, which are secured to the straight ends of the bent pieces, forming straight rigid sides.

Rods D extend across the frame near each end. Upon these rods the legs E are pivoted, and a support is formed for the slats F, which support the mattress, the latter having semicircular ends which conform to the ends of the frame A. The legs E, at each end of the frame, are connected by a rod, a, and each leg is provided with a slotted brace, 1).

Instead of making the frame A of several pieces, as above described, it may be made of a single strip of .wood bent into the required form.

A frame, G, which is similar in all respects to the frame A, is placed upon the frame A, and held in place by dowels g at the sides and hooks c at the ends. To the head of the frame G, at the juncture of the straight and curved portions, an arched or bent piece, H, is secured, at right angles to the upper surface of the frame, and to it is secured a wire-gauze hood, which is also secured to the head of the frame G.

The movable cover I consists of the bent piece 01, which extends from the piece H to the foot of the frame G, the two upright arched pieces 0 j, and the wire covering 9 h. This cover is pivoted to the arched piece H near the frame G, and to one of its pivots is attached a lever, J, for opening and closing the cover. The cover fits tightly down upon the frame G and over the arched piece H when it is closed, and when it is opened it assumes the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The cover is easily operated from the inside, and, while it permits of a free circulation of air, it effectually excludes insects.

The form of the bed-frame renders it very strong and durable, as end joints are avoided, and it permits of the use of little material in its manufacture. When the cover is removed the bed may be used as an ordinary cot.

I am aware that a woven wire-cloth cradlebody with a pivoted wire hood, or one consisting of separate end pieces, is not new; also, that it is old to support a wooden cradle by upright ribs, or to make a cradle with semicylindrical frame covered with wire-cloth, pivoted to a head and foot rail; but What I claim as new and of my invention 1s The combination, with the frame B B (J 0, having slats supported on cross-bars D D, of the frame G, secured detachably thereto and provided with a netting whose longer section turns over the shorter one, as shown and described.
