SALES-SLIP HOLDER Filed F'eb. l, 1939 Patented Oct. 10, 1939 UNITED STATES SALES-SLIP HOLDER Henry Y. Brock, Jr., Baltimore, Md., assigner to The Baltimore Salesbook Company, Baltimore, Md., a corporation of Maryland Application February 1, 1939, Serial No. 254,125
5 Claims.
The invention relates to a holder for sales slips and has as an object the provision of a device `of this character that will hold the slips for notation by the salesman, and will provide a receptacle for used slips.
It is'a further object of the invention to provide a rigid casing to hold sales slips with a rigid easel to provide a writing deck for the blank to be filled out.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a holder of the character referred to which is deeper at one end than at the remaining end whereby to meet the conditions oi the slips without an edge projecting above the easel to interfere with lling out of the blank.
Further objects of the invention will appear from the following description when read in connection with the accompanying drawing showing an illustrative embodiment of the invention, and wherein:
Figure l is a plan view;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal transverse section on line 4-4 of Figure 1; and
Fig. 5 is a detail plan view of a portion of the clip; and
Fig. 6 is a detail section on a line corresponding to line 3-3 of Figure 1, showing a different form of the device.
As shown the device comprises a receptacle I0 having end walls Il, I2, and a side wall I3, which latter is of greater width at one end than at the other thereof.
To hold the blank slips to be lled out there is shown a diaphragm I4 hinged to the wall II upon the pintle I5. Upon said pintle there are shown a pair of coil springs I6 one end of which as I1 is anchored against the interior of the wall II and the remaining end I8 of which anchors against the diaphragm I4. The diaphragm I4 is utilized to carry the supply of blank slips to be written on, and for this purpose has rigidly secured thereto member I9 of a paper clip shown in plan view in Figure 5.
Upon a margin of the paper clip are upstanding teeth 2l) to grip the paper and hinged thereto upon a pintle 2| is the swinging portion 22 of the paper clip urged toward the member I9 by means of coil springs 23, the member 22 shown as provided with an upturned member 24 to be engaged by a nger or thumb of the user to insert blank slips at need.
Also hinged upon the pintle I5 there is shown an easel member 25 freely movable about the pintle, no spring pressure acting thereon. The end wall 26 of the easel, which end wall is pivoted upon the pintle I5 is shown as of substantially the same height as end wall II and both 5 are of substantially the same height as end wall I2. This results in the excess thickness of the holder at the hinge end thereof.
The sales slips to be utilized in the device will usually be such as are provided with a plurality 10 of duplicates interleaved with carbon paper. Because the paper clip ISI- 24 compresses these slips at one end thereof while the other end is free of compression, they will bulk deeper adjacent the end wall 25 of the easel and the eX- 15 cess thickness of the entire device at this end will provide for the housing of the slips in this condition. v
Under action of the spring I6 the diaphragm I4 will also compress one end of the slips which have been written upon and are placed under the diaphragm for storage. If the side Wall I3 were of uniform width equal to the combined Width of the end walls II- and 26 and if the end wall l2 were of the same height, writing upon the slips would be interfered with by the excess width of the side walls adjacent the paper clip end of the device.
In use the easel 25 is swung backwardly about the pintle I5, one slip to be utilized is swung outwardly and the easel 25 replaced with the slip to be filled out lying at the upper surface, thereby providing a rigid and smooth surface upon which to write and also preventing any smudging of the remaining supply of blank slips.
After the slip has been filled out the completed slip may be removed, simply by pulling it away from the clip. The diaphragm I4 may be swung away about pintle I5 against resistance of spring I6, notch 21 being shown as provided in the end wall I2 and in the bottom 28 of the receptacle to give ready access of a nger of the user to the end of diaphragm I4, and the filled out slip may be inserted in the receptacle provided below the diaphragm I4. 45
It will be seen that when the device is to be filled with blank slips there will beno slips in the receptacle, the entire supply being upon the paper clip which will normally ll the holder so as to hold the easel 25 substantially flush 50 with the upper edges of the side wall I3. As the supply of slips is utilized one after another, they will be placed in the receptacle which will be lled substantially in proportion to the diminution of the number in the paper clip so that the easel 25, will at all times be substantially flush with the upper edges of the said side walls I3 and the slip at any time being Written upon overlying easel 25 will be as free of access` to the pencil of the user as though it were lying upon a desk top.
In the form of Fig. 6 the plates I4" and 25" are of the same form at the hinged ends,y plate 25.v being hinged to I4 at the angle of the latter., This form 'of the device will operate precisely as; explained for the form of Figs. 1-5.
Minor changes may be made in the physical embodiments of the invention within the. scope of the appended claims Without departing from the spirit thereof.
I claim:
1. A sales slip holder comprising, in; combina-V tion: a receptacle having an open side; a. diaphragm plate hinged at one edge ofA said receptacle for movement over said open side',r relative to the bottom thereof; said plate at its hinged. edge permanently spaced from thev said bottom; spring means urging said plate at4 its free edge toward said bottom whereby to; press against edges of slips stored in the receptacle; an easel plate permanently spaced at one edge from the hinged edge of said diaphragm plate and hinged at said edge for pivotal movement relative to said diaphragm plate and to the receptacle; and paper clip means carried by a free edge of the diaphragm plate.
2. A sales slip holder comprising, in combination: a receptacle; a diaphragm hinged to a Wall of said receptacle in spaced relation to the bottom thereof; spring means urging the free edge of said diaphragm toward the bottom of the receptacle; a paper clip carried by said free edge; and an easel plate spaced at one of its margins from said diaphragm at said Wall with said margin hinged to said Wall to enclose sheets secured by said clip, whereby to secure one edge of a supply of blank sheets by said paper clip and one edge of used slips in said receptacle by the free edge of said diaphragm.
3., A sales slip holder comprising, in combination: a receptacle; a plate hinged to an end wall of said receptacle in spaced relation to the bottorn thereof; spring means urging the free end of said plate toward the bottom of said receptacle; a paper clip secured to said free end; and an easel plate having a down-turned end hinged to said end wall to enclose sales slips secured in said clip, whereby to compress one end of slips by said paper clips and the corresponding ends of slips stored below said plate.
4. The combination of claim 3 with side walls of the receptacle rising to substantially the height of the surface of the easel plate at the hinged end thereof and sloping to a less height at the .free end of said easel plate.
5. A sales slip holder comprising, in combination: a receptacle having bottom, end, and side Walls; a diaphragm plate hinged to one end wall in spaced relation to the bottom Wall and with its free end spring pressed toward said bottom Wall within the remaining end Wall; an easel plate hinged at one margin to the first named end Wall with its hinged margin in spaced relation to said diaphragm plate hinge; the second named end wall rising to substantially the height of said diaphragm plate hinge; and said side walls sloping from a position at the rst named end Wall substantially ush with the hinged end of the easel plate to the height of the free edge of the second named end wall.
