CHARLES F. MITCHELL, OF TORRNCE, CALIFORNIA.
RECORD-FILING DEVICE.
Application tiled December 22, 1921. Serial No. 524,154.
To all whom t may cemcem:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. MrrHELL, a citizen of the United States, resldlng at Torrance, in the county of Los Angeles and\ State of California, have inventednew and useful Improvements in Record-Fllmg. Devices, of which the following is a speclfication.
My invention relates generally to record -filing devices, and more particularly to a combined' receptacle and support for cards,
kleaflets and the like, which contain data that may be frequently referred to or which may be written upon from time to time, and the articular form of the invention herein il ustratcd is designed for containing` and Supporting stock record cards that are utilized in connection with tool cribs or stock bins.
wllhe principal objects of my invention are to provide a relatively simple and practical device that will receive and retain 1n a convenient manner a number of cards or 'leaflets, a portion of the device being hmged to the main body or housing so that it may be. swung downward to rovlde a convenient support for the cardew en the same are examined or while they are being written upon.
A further object of my invention is to rovide a device of the character referre to that will maintain a number of cards or leaflets in superimposed relation and at the same time permit the cards or leaflets to be readily separated in order that any one card or leaflet may be readily examined or written upon.
A further object of my invention -is to provide a record filing device that 1s of strong and substantial structure, very compact, and which when closed prevents dust and the like from settling upon the enclosed cards or leafiets.
With the foregoing objects in view, my invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein: l
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a record filing device of my improved construction, with the cover swung downward into position to form a support for the contained cards;
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of' the device with the sition. v
Figure 3 is a side elevational view of a modified form of my improved record filing device.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a practical embodiment of my invention, 10 designates the body of the device which is `preferably box-like in structure, and composed of sheet metal or analogous material. Hinged to the lower front corner of the box-like body 10 is a substantially rectangular plate or panel 11, preferably formed of sheet metal, which is adapted to close'the open front of the boxlike body 10. The side edges of the cover plate or panel 11' are provided with rearwardly projecting flanges 12 which when the panel is in closed position overlie the front edges of the side walls of the body 10.
The plate or panel 11 is provided with a portlon 13 that projects beyond the point where said plate or panel is hinged to the body 10, said projecting portion providing a plate that engages beneath the bottom of the box-like body 10 when the plate or panel 11 is swung downwardly into o en position and, consequently, serving to hold sald plate or panel 11 in a substantially horizontal position, as illustrated in Figure 1. When so positioned, the closing plate or panel 11 provides a convenient support for the cards or leafiets while same are being examined or written upon.
Secured to the inner face of the plate or panel 11 adjacent to the oint where the same is hinged to the container 10 is a pair of ins 14 which occupy positions substantial y at right angles to the plane occupied by said plate or panel, and the ends of said pms are bent so as to form substantiall S- shaped portions 15 that are dispose at right angles to the plane occupied by the body portions of said pins. The cards or leaflets C that are contained within the box or housing are provided adjacent to one end with perforations P which accommodate the pins 14:.
Secured to the top of the boX or container 10 and projecting forwardly therefrom is a short spring tongue member 16 that is adapted to engage the upper or outer edge pf the plate or panel 11 and retain the latter in closed position upon the front of the box.
cover thereof in closed po- When my im roved device is installed for use, it is firm y secured in upright posit-ion against a suitable vertical support and the data-bearing cards are arranged upon the pins 14. When the plate or panel -11 is swun ju wardly into position to close the front ofp the container l0, the cards or leaflets occupy vertical positions within said container, where they are protected from dust and the like, and when the plate or panel is swung downward into a substantially horizontal position the cards or leaflets lie in superimposed arrangement upon .the plate or panel, where they may be readily examined or written upon.
The bent ends 15 of the pins 14 are effective in retaining the cards in position upon said pins when the cover plate or panel is in closed position or while said cover plate is o en and the cards or leaflets are being han led by the users ofthe device.
lln Figure 3 l have illustrated a modified construction wherein the body of the card or leaflet holding box or container is hinged at its rear lower corner to a suitable support so that it may be swunn outwardly and downwardly into a substantially horizontal plane, thereby permitting its top to be used as a writin surface. Where such construction is emp oyed one end of the box or container, preferabiy the upper end, is pro- Leeaeaa vided with a hinged cover which may be readily bent to permit the insertion or renlpval of cards, leaflets, catalogues or the A. record filing,r deviceof my improved construction is comparatively simple, is very compact and provides a convenient container and support for cards or leaflets that are used in various lines of business and which cards or leaets are frequently referred to.
It will be understood that minor changes in the size, form and construction of the various parts of my improved record tiling device may be made and substituted for those hereln shown and described without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope of which is set forth in the appended claim.
lf claim as my invention:
ln combination, -a container having an open side, a panel pivoted on the container to close the open side thereof when in vertical position, and pins secured to the inner side of the panel and having offset free ends for retaining sheets of writing material against displacement from the pins when the panel is in closed position.
lin testimony whereof l have signed my name to this s eciication.
C ARLES l?. MlITCHELL.
