This invention relates to garment holders of the type set forth in Reissue Patent No. 19,930 issued to James G. Tompkins on April 14, 1936, which is characterized by the embodiment of a garment engaging yoke having an open and a closed end and pivoted at its open end for swinging movement around the pivotal axis to effect wrapping of a portion of a garment around the closed end thereof; the present invention especially pertaining to a method of fabricating the yoke as set forth in a co-pending application for Letters Patent on a garment holder filed by me November 26, 1936, and bearing Serial Number 112,257 and of which this application is a division, and which application has resulted in Letters Patent Number 2,122,141 dated June 23, 1938.
In the construction of a garment engaging yoke of the character above referred to it is quite essential that the opposite sides of the yoke be equipped with protruding soft resilient material adapted to effect a cushioning and gripping action on fabric wrapped around the yoke so as to obviate any possibility of such slipping of the fabric as to cause it to become excessively loosened on the yoke or become accidentally disengaged therefrom. An effective means for accomplishing this desideratum resides in equipping the yoke with a gripping pad of rubber or similar resilient material as set forth in the application aforesaid, that is, with the pad anchored in an opening formed in the yoke in a fashion to protrude from both sides of the yoke.
An object of the present invention is to provide a method of fabricating the garment engaging yoke in such fashion as to facilitate assemblage of a resilient gripping pad on the yoke in a strong and durable fashion and such as to present a neat appearance.
Another object is to provide a method of so forming and mounting the pad as to avoid placing it under tension whereby the elastic cushioning quality of the pad is maintained and its gripping efficiency greatly enhanced.
With the foregoing objects in View, together with such other objects and advantages as may subsequently appear, the invention is carried into elTect as illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Referring to the drawing more specifically A indicates generally the garment engaging yoke which embodies arms 8 and 9 projecting from a plate I!) constituting the closed end of the yoke 15 which protrudes a tongue IS with a clearance garment 20 space around the end and side margins of the :25
tongue. The yoke thus formed is pr-eferabh struck from sheet metal, with the opening 14 formed substantially U-shaped to define the tongue.
.In forming the yoke the tongue I5 is extended angularly or obliquely to the plane of the plate l9 so that its free end will project outwardly relative to the margin of the opening l4, and the tongue is formed of a thickness less than the thickness of the marginal portion of the opening M from which it protrudes so as to provide narrow shoulders a and b projecting outwardly from the base of the tongue on opposed sides thereof.
The tongue is slightly tapered longitudinally so that its outer end portion will be narrower than 40 its base portion.
The tongue thus formed is designed to receive a gripping pad or cushion B formed of an elastic or resilient material such as rubber or rubber composition and which as here shown comprises a short tube formed of ribbed rubber, which tube is of substantially rectangular cross section and of an outline substantially conforming to the outline or margin of the opening [4; the bore 5 of the tube being rectangular in cross section and dimensioned to loosely receive the tongue I 5.
Manifestly, the bore l6 may be dimensioned to have a cross sectional area less than that of the tongue I5 whereby on applying the elastic tube 5 to the tongue the tube will be placed under a state of tension or compression such as to tightly grip the tongue. However, while in some instances such construction may be used, it is undesirable in some cases since the tube is thereby stiffened and rendered less elastic, thereby decreasing its wearing qualities and lessening the cushioning and gripping action of the resultant pad B.
In mounting the tube on the tongue 15 the free end of the latter is inserted in one end of the bore [6 as shown in Fig. 3 whereupon the tube is advanced longitudinally of the tongue until it is brought snugly against the margin of the opening 14 at the base of the tongue [5, as shown in Fig. 4. The tongue I is then pressed inwardly to bring its free end to a fixed position within the space bounded by the margin of the opening M, as particularly shown in Fig. 5, so that opposed side portions of the tube will then protrude from opposite sides of the plate .10 and thus form the desired gripping .pad on .each side of the plate.
The pad B formed of the elastic tube will then be securely held in place within the opening l4 since its ends will abut against opposed margins of the opening 14.
By forming the tongue l5 of a thickness less than the width of the margins of the opening l4 and forming the bore l5 of the tube to snugly conform thereto, the margins of the ends of the bore H5 at one end of the tube, will overlie the shoulders a and b and likewise the margins of the bore l6 at the other end of the tube will 1 underlie or overlap the margins of the opening it as indicated at c and d in Fig. 5, thus effectively concealing the margins of the bore.
It will now be seen from the foregoing that I have provided a simple and effective mode of equipping the garment engaging yoke with a gripping pad protruding from opposite sides of an end extension of the yoke with the pad completely encircled or framed by the material of which the yoke and its extension is formed.
The device thus formed is especially applicable for use in hose or stocking supporters in engaging the fabric thereof to hold the hose or stocking in place on the wearer.
I claim:
l. A method of fabricating a hose supporting yoke consisting in forming a yoke with a plate extension on the closed end thereof, forming an opening in the plate with a tongue protruding angularly from the margin of the opening and with the tongue having a thickness slightly less than the thickness of the margin of the opening to provide shoulders along the base of the tongue, advancing a resilient tube in an endwise manner over the free end of said tongue to a position wherein it surrounds said tongue, said tube having a bore closely conforming to said tongue, then pressing the tongue inwardly and fixedly positioning its free end within the space bOllllded by the margin of the opening and thereby positioning the tube within the boundary of the opening'withthe end margins of the bore thereof concealed by the margins of the opening.
' 2. The method of fabricating a hose supporting yoke consisting in forming a yoke of sheet metal with a plate projecting from the closed end thereof, punching a U-shaped opening in the plate to define a tongue, bending the tongue to dispose its free end outwardly from the plate, forming a length of rubber tubing having an exterior contour substantially conforming to the contour of the margin of said opening, and having a bore substantially conforming to said tongue, placing said length of tubing on said tongue by inserting the latter into the tubing, and finally bending the tongue to be positioned its free end within the boundary of said opening.
3. The method of fabricating a hose supporting yoke consisting in stamping out a yoke with a plate on the closed end thereof, the stamping operation cutting out an opening in the plate with a tongue protruding from the margin of the opening, advancing a resilient tube in an endwise manner over the free end of said tongue to a position in which it surrounds said tongue, then pressing said tongue inwardly thus fixedly positioning its free end within the space bounded by the margin of said opening and thereby preventing withdrawal of the tube from the tongue.
4. The subject matter of claim 3, and, said opening which is stamped in said plate being made rectangular.
5. The method of fabricating a hose supporting yoke consisting in performing a stamping operation on sheet metal whereby a plate is formed with a body portion having an opening through it and with attaching extensions, the stamping operation also forming within said opening a tongue protruding from the margin of said opening obliquely in relation to the face of said plate, advancing a resilient tube in an endwise manner over the free end of said tongue to a position in which it surrounds the length of said tongue, then pressing said tongue inwardly and thereby positioning its free end within the plane of said opening, thereby preventing the withdrawal of said tube from said tongue.
