NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
YARNALL BAILY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
GAS-BURNER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 21,733, dated October 12, 1858; Ressued May 3, 1859, No. 708.
T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I7 YARNALL BAILY, of the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented anew and Improved Mode of Adjusting Self-Generating Gas-Burners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and accurate description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention consists in so constructing and arranging the generator of self genererating gasburners in connection with the tube and burner that the said heater may be adjustable in such a manner that when the heater is extended it will prevent more surface to the flame, which consequently generates more vapor or gas, and the extent of the light is increased, and by lowering the heater less surface is exposedto the flame and the opposite results are obtained, thus by my improved mode of adjusting self generating gasburners the extent of the llame may be increased or diminished at pleasure.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
On reference to the drawings which form a part of this specification Figure l is a perspective view of the tube and generator showing my improvement. Fig. 2. is a sectional view showing the flame reduced. Fig. 3. is a transverse section of the same.
A represents a portion of a reservoir to which my improvement is attached.
B is the tube for the reception of a wick c, the end of which is submerged in the fluid.
[FIR-sr PRINTED 1911.]
c a vacant space in the tube as a gaschamber o the burner.
Underneath the burner and closely encircling the tube B, is an adjustable heater D, which may be kept in place by a screw or otherwise and which extends above the burner, having a slot or opening through, forming flanges (e, c) for the flame to pass between7 which imparts sufficient Vheat to furnish a supply of gas or vapor. IVhen it is desired to reduce the extent of the flame, the heater is lowered, which prevents less surface to the flame and also removes the lower part of the heater from contact with the tube by which means less heat is imparted to the tube and consequently generates less vapor thus the extent of the flame may be increased or diminished at pleasure.
I am aware that heaters have been used for similar purposes heretofore. Therefore I do not desire to claim the idea or invention of generating the vapor by the use of heaters, arranged in contact with the flame of lamps or gasburners7 but fhat I claim and desire t-o secure by Letters Patent is- The mode of producing a Haine, the extent of which may be increased or diminished at pleasure by means of the adjustable heater D in connection with the tube B and the burner o substantially as herein described or any equivalent to the same.
YARNALL BAILY.
