Patented Sept. 12, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Frederick J. Striebel and Levi J. Flags Millbury, Mass.; said Flagg assignor to said Striebel Application August 1, 1938, Serial No. 222,541
4 Claims.
The present invention relates to automatic lubricators for picker rods for looms and has for its primary object to provide means for supplying a lubricant to the rawhide picker as the same travels back and forth along the rod.
An important object of the present invention is to provide novel means for controlling the supply of lubricant fed to the rod.
A still further object is to provide an attachment of this character of simple and practical construction, which is eflicient and reliable in performance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, which may be operatively mounted in position on the lay of the loom without necessitating any material changes in the construction or operation thereof, and which at the same time is otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which- Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the lay of a loom showing the lubricator attached in position thereto.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the guide rod for the picker shown attached to the lubricat- 30 ing reservoir.
Figure 3 is an end elevational View of the reservoir.
Figure 4 is a front elevational view.
Figure 5 is a longitudinal sectional view taken 5 substantially on a line 55 of Figure 2, and
Figure 6 is a longitudinal sectional view through the rod.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration we have disclosed 40 a preferred embodiment of the invention, the
numeral 5 designates the lay of a loom of conventional construction and to the front end of which is secured an oil reservoir 6 by means of a slotted attaching fiange I. The reservoir is of 45 substantially flat irregular contour having a cover plate 8 secured thereto by means of screws or the like 9 and to the upper edge of which is threaded a ventilated filler cap I0.
Formed on the inner wall of the reservoir 6,
50 at one end thereof and adjacent its upper portion, is a recess lubricant trap II from which extends a feed channel I2 communicating with a tubular fitting l3 threadedly attached to the reservoir at one end, the opposite end of the 55 fitting being threaded laterally into an extension H! which is threaded in one end of the guide rod l5 and upon which the rawhide picker l6 slidably travels. The extension [4 is formed with the longitudinally extending passage I! which communicates with the passage of the fitting l3 and 5 which also communicates with a longitudinally extending passage [8 formed in the rod [5.
Intermediate the ends of the rod [5 is a lateral discharge port l9 communicating with the passage l8, said port being controlled by a valve 20 which is adjustable by means of a plug 2| threaded in the side of the rod diametrically opposite from the port 19, as will be clearly apparent from an inspection of Figure 6 of the drawings.
The feeding of lubricant from the reservoir 6 through the passage [2 is also controlled by an adjusting screw 22 threaded through a Wall of the reservoir and having its ends movable into and out of position with respect to the inner end of the passage 12 as shown in Figure 5.
A baflle 23 is formed within the reservoir 6 which extends downwardly from the top of the reservoir and having its lower end curved in a direction toward the trap II to provide a restricted passage 24 leading to said trap.
The fitting l3 and extension M are polygonal in cross section to facilitate the threaded engagement thereof for connecting the parts as shown.
The upper edge of the reservoir provided with the filler plug [0 is offset below the horizontal plane of the uppermost edge of the reservoir and substantially on a horizontal plane with the trap II in order that the reservoir cannot be filled to a level above said trap.
In the operation of the device with the reservoir 6 provided with a quantity of lubricating oil, as the lay of the loom moves back and forth the oil is splashed into the trap H where the same flows by gravity through the duct l2, the fitting 13, the extension l4 and the rod l5 out through the port I9 in the side thereof for the purpose of lubricating the leather picker IS. The volume of oil passing through the rod is controlled by the screw 22 and the valve 20.
It is believed the details of construction and manner of operation of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing without further detailed explanation.
Having thus described the invention, what we claim is- 50 1. A lubricating attachment for picker rods of looms comprising an oil reservoir secured to the lay of the loom, a recess in a wall of the reservoir forming an oil trap within the reservoir for collecting oil as a result of movement of the lay and 55
