VALANCE-SUPPORTING DEVICE Filed Nov. 25, 1938 Patented Sept. 12, 1939 UNITED STATES y vmais PATENT OFFICE VALANCE-SUPPORTING DEVICE Regina Hoefner, Columbus, Ohio Application November 25, 1938, Serial No. 242,169 7 anims. (c1. 15s- 13) This invention relates to the art of interior decorating and is particularly directed to an improved supporting member ior Valances, draperies and similar types of hanging ornamentations. At the present time, fabric devices known as valances are employed to ornament the upper portions of window and door openings. To hold these Valances, the casings around the doors and windows have a flat board nailed or'otherwise secured thereto and the Valances are tacked or fastened by other means to the outer edges of the boards. This manner of hanging Valances is objectionable because of the difculty of installation and the imperfect appearence resulting from the improper and inadequate support of the Valances. Generally, the valance possesses a vertical dimension of from five to twelve inches and at the ends of the transversely extending portion where the material returns to the wall or window casing, the lower portion is unsupported, permitting it to sag and wrinkle which will detract from the appearance of the device.
The primary object of the inventionresides in providing a valance supporting device which Will avoid the above objections and be simple and convenient to install, rendering the change or replacement of the valance an easy task.
The second object of the invention resides in the provision of a supporting device composed of a plurality of sections which are adjustable relative `to one another to make the device adaptable to windows of various sizes.
The third object rests in providing a support having a vertically disposed corner section which will engage and hold the lower portion of the valance at the juncture of the transversely eX- tending section and the outwardly projecting portions whereby the appearance of the valance will be improved.
Other objects will be apparent from the following description and the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a valance supporting device formed in accordance with the present invention and showing the device in applied position on the window casing;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one end portion of the valance supporting device with the valance positioned thereon, this view being taken from the inner side of the valance;
Fig. 3 is an end elevational view of a bracket forming part of the valance supporting device;
Fig. 4 is a front elevational view of the bracket shown in Fig. 3.
Referring more particularly to the drawing,
the numeral I designates the valance supporting device in its entirety. This device includes a pair of brackets 2 which are connected by means of an extension rod 3. Each of the brackets includes a base portion 4 having a plurality of keyhole openings 5 through which screws 6 or other" securing devices project to hold the brackets in connection with the window or door casing. Secured to the upper portion of the base is a strip l which projects outwardly from the wall or window casing surface and is bent at a point intermediate its ends to provide an arm 8 extending in a horizontal direction toward the opposite side of the window casing in a plane spaced laterally from the surface of the wall or window casing. At the point where the strip l is bent, there is a corner angle member 9 secured at its upper end to the strip. The corner member is Vertically disposed and has its lower end braced by means of a strip l which extends thereto from the lower portion of the base ii. The base 4, the arm 8 and the corner member S are provided with openings Il for the reception of clips I2 or other securing devices used to hold the valance in connection with the bracket.
The valance l?. is provided on its inner or reverse side with a casing Ill in which is removably positioned a tubular extension rod l5. When the valance is assembled with the supporting device, the ends of the arms 8 on the brackets are telescopically positioned in the ends of the extension rod l5. Then the entire assembly is secured to the window casing by positioning the base members oi the brackets in engagement with the screws It is obvious that the vertically eX- tending corner member 9 will support the lower portion oi the valance by reason of its engagement therewith and will hold this portion in its intended position.
While the bracket has been shown as fabricated from a plurality of separate pieces welded or otherwise secured together, it is obvious that in the manufacturing of the device, it may be found desirable to stamp the entire device from a single piece of material. This change would not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the following claims.
I claim.:
1. A Valance supporting bracket; comprising a vertically extending corner section, means connected with said section for holding it in spaced relation to a wall surface, and a horizontally disposed arm projecting from said section in a plane parallel to said wall surface and spaced therefrom, said bracket being provided with openings to receive valance securing elements.
2. A valance supporting bracket comprising a vertically disposed corner section, a base section formed for attachment to a wall surface, brace means extending between said base and corner sections to hold the latter in spaced relation to the wall surface, and an arm extending horizontally from said corner section in spaced relation to the wall surface.
3. A valance supporting bracket comprising base section formed for attachment to a well surface, a pair of brace members extending from said base section, a vertically disposed corner section secured to the outer ends of said brace members, and an arm extending horizontally from said corner section in spaced parallel relation to the Wall surface.
4. A valance supporting bracket comprising a vertically disposed corner section, a base section formed for attachment to a wall surface, brace means extending between said base and corner sections to hold the latter in spaced relation to the wall surface, and an arm extending horizontally from the upper end of said corner section in spaced relation to the wall surface.
5. A valance supporting bracket comprising a base section formed for attachment to a wall surface, a member secured to said base section and extending outwardly from the wall surface, said member being bent at the intermediate portion thereof to provide an arm extending in a horizontal direction parallel to and spaced from the wall surface, and a corner section depending from said member at the bend therein.
6. A valance support comprising a pair of brackets each of which includes a base section formed for attachment to a wall surface, a member secured to said base section and extending outwardly from the wall surface, the intermediate portion of said member on each bracket being bent to provide a horizontally disposed arm extending toward the other bracket in spaced relation to the wall surface, a corner section depending from said member at the bend therein, and an extension bar telescopically connected with the outer ends of said horizontal arms.
7. A valance support comprising a pair of brackets each of which includes a base section formed for attachment to a wall surface, a member secured to said base section and extending outwardly from the wall surface, the intermediate portion of said member on each bracket being bent to provide a horizontally disposed arm extending toward the other bracket in spaced relation to the wall surface, a corner section depending from said member at the bend therein, a brace extending from the lower end of said corner section to said base section, and an extension bar telescopically connected with the outer ends of said horizontal arms.
