IM PROVEM ENT IN HORSE-COLLARS.

Speciication forming part of Letters Patent No. 217,257, dated July 8, 1879; application tiled January 25, 1879.

To all whom fitmag/ concern:

Be it known that I, EDWTN J. BLOOD, o Mukwonago, in the county of Waukesha and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in HorseOollars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had'to the accompanyin g drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication.

The object of my invention is to provide a l device to secure the upper ends of. horse-eollars together, which will serve as-a substitute for the straps and buckles now used, and by which the ends of the collar may be more plainly and cheaply finished and more quickly secured together.

A further object of the device -is to give the ,upper part of the collar the peculiar rounded or concave shape, so as to nicely lit the neck of a horse, as well as to provide against the tendency of the top of the collar to sag. and draw together and retain the same at all times in its original and proper form, thus `rendering the collar less liable to chafe and gall the horse.

My device consists in providing the upper ends of a collar with two peculiarly-shaped conca\'oconvex metallic plates, which are cast or otherwise shaped to nicely fit upon the top of a horses neck, between which plates the upper ends of the collar are permanently secured, all of which is further explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a sectional front view of my invention as attached to the collar.

Fig. 2 represents a detached side view of my invention, showing the several parts one above another in the order in which they are secured together. Fig. 3 is a top view of the upper plate. Fig. 4 is a top view of the lower plate. Fig. 5 is a sectional side view of my devices as attached.

In the accompanying drawings similar reference-letters represent corresponding parts,

A represents the collar. B is the upper plate, which is provided with holes c c for the reception of pins d d of the lower plate, E, and with hole F for the reception of the screwbolt G of the lower plate, and flange H, against which ange the upper hanne strap of the 'harness rests, and by which it is prevented from workin g backward.

I is an ordinary leather collar-pad, which K is a hand-nut, which may be provided with an ornamental ring at its upper end, by

which it is readily screwed upon or removed from the screw-bolt Gr.V It also serves as a suitable and convenient `support for a bell or other ornament.

Thecollar-pad heilig rst attached, as described, the collar is secured between the plates, as shown in Fig. l, in the following manner: Holes are first cut through the ends of the collar for the reception oi' pins d d, which are inserted through them, when the upper plate, B, is pressed downward, so that the pins d d and screw-bolt G enter their respective holes in said upper plate, when the hand-nut K is turned tlown upon screw G, pressing upon the upper plate, thus drawing the two plates firmly together upon the respective ends of the collar, whereby they are securely held together and retained in their proper shape and position. y

Having thus .described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In devices for securing the upper ends of horse-collars together, the combination of the concavo-convex plate B, provided with holes c c and F, and flange H, with collar A, and concavo-convex plate E, provided with screwbolt Gr, and pins d, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. In devices for securing the upper ends of horse-collars together, the combination. of the ooncavo-'convex plate E, provided with screwbolt G, with collar-pad I, upper plate, B, and' hand-nut K, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
