DANIEL J. DAVIS, OF RED BOILING SPRINGS, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT'IN CO MBINED TABLE AND SAFE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 217,074, dated July 1, 1879; application filed August 27, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that ,I, DANIEL J. DAVIS, of Red Boiling Springs, in the county of Macon and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and Improved Combined Table and Safe, of which the following is a specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical central section of myimproved table and safe, shown with its movable top raised and fly-net. lowered ready for use. Fig. 2.is a top view of the movable top of the table and of the fly-net attached thereto andFig. 3 is a top view of the table with movable top and revolving center-piece taken off.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention has reference to a combined table and safe that may be used with great convenience as a dining-table, the different parts being made to revolve for more convenient handling of the dishes, and the device being finally changed, after use, into a safe, in which all the plates and accessories are neatly stored away, without requiring a cupboard or shelves, and ready for instant use without the loss of time in removing the plates and set ting the table. During the meal the persons eating are fully protected against the flies, and are able to enjoy their meal with comfort and without annoyance.
The table is specially adapted for country hotels, restaurants, and private families, owing to its convenience in use and the time and labor saved thereby.
The invention consists in a combined table and safe in which a vertically-adjustable top or cover, when raised, forms a canopy and reflector, and when lowered a casing or safe, as hereinafter described.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a table that is made with a revolving centerpiece, B, which is supported on rolls a at suitable height above an outer encircling piece, 0, of ring shape. The ring-shaped piece 0 is also made to revolve, being supported on antifriction rollers b of the table proper, and guided concentrically to the center-piece by flanged horizontal rolls cl; The rolls a and d revolve in wooden or metallic bearings cl,
which are secured to the main frame of the table. The ringshaped section 0 is locked by a slide-catch, e, of the table, that enters a recess, 0, of the ring-piece, so that the same is firmly held in position when taking a meal, while the center-piece is turned by each person for getting conveniently at the dishes placed thereon. Projecting buttons f ofthe ring-section G serve for attaching the tablecloth thereto.
A hollow post, D, at the center of table A serves to guide a vertically-adjustable rackbar, D, to the upper end of which the top or cover E is secured. The diameter of top E is equal to the diameter of the ring-section (l, and its height sufficient to conveniently inclose the ring-section and centerpiece with all the dishes thereon, so as to form, when lowered, a safe or cupboard that fully covers the movable sections with all the plates, dishes,
knives, forks, and other utensils, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. l.
The rack-bar D and top E are raised or lowered by apinion and shaft, the shaft extending through the table, and being made to receive a hand crank or key.- The top is sup ported at any suitable height above the table by a spring-pawl, g, entering notches g of the rack-bar. The hollow post D is extended upward to a level with the centerpiece, which is guided by a central opening thereon.
The movable top E is perforated at theside for ventilation, and preferably so constructed and painted at the inside as to act as a kind of canopy and reflector when in raised position.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of a table with a verticallyadjustable top or cover that forms, when raised, a canopy and reflector, and when lowered a casing or safe for the table, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
DANIEL JONES DAVIS.
