Patented Aug. 22, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Claims.
This invention relates to a ventilating cover or lid for containers, the general object of the invention being to provide means whereby fumes or gases can escape from the container and fresh air can enter the same, while preventing insects, dust or other foreign particles from entering the container with the air.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view through a container with the improved lid or cover thereon.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the cover.
Fig. 3 is a view of the main cover with the auxiliary cover removed.
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view through Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view through the auxiliary cover.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view through the main cover.
In these drawings, the letter A indicates a container which is to be covered by the improved cover or lid, it being understood that this container may be of any suitable shape or kind. The improved cover consists of a main part I and an auxiliary part 2. The main part or cover I has a flange 3 for fitting in the mouth of the container and the top of this part I has a circular opening 4 at its center. An annular flat part 5 surrounds the opening and this flat part is provided with the spaced holes 6 which are preferably covered by screen. material I, placed on the under face of the flat part. A flange or thickened part 8 is formed on the upper face of the inner circumference of this flat part. The flange 3 may be connected with the top of part I by a turned over edge, as shown at 9 or this flange may be formed integrally with the top. The top of part I is corrugated, the corrugations being in the form of upwardly bowed annular portions, as shown at Ill, the inner one of which surrounds the flat part 5 and an annular bead II surrounds the outer one. The part 2 or auxiliary cover is formed with a central circular depression I2 which fits in the opening 4 and this part 2 is also formed with the flat part I3 which lies over the flat part 5 of the main part I when the two parts are placed together, but
the two flat parts are spaced apart by the flange 8. The part 2 is also formed with the corrugations I4, the outer one of which is formed with the holes I5 and the periphery of part 2 is formed with a downwardly curved part I6 which I fits in the space formed by bead I I and also acts to space the auxiliary part from the main part at the corrugations, as shown in Fig. 4. Thus when the two parts I and 2 are placed together with the depression I2 in the opening 4 the parts 10 8 and I6 will space the parts having the corrugations and the flat portions therein, apart so as to form an annular air space into which air can enter through the holes I5 and pass therefrom through the holes- 6 into the container. Gases and the like can also pass from the container through the holes 6 into said air space and pass from the space through the holes I5. As will be seen, the corrugations make the air space a tortuous one so that if there is any dust or foreign particles in the air, this matter will settle into the lower portions of the corrugations of the part I or rather into the grooves formed by such corrugations.
A handle I'I extends across the depression I2 of the auxiliary part 2 to facilitate handling the said part and an inverted U shaped handle I8 is connected with the main part I.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. A cover device of the class described, comprising a main part having corrugations in an intermediate portion thereof and holes in a portion spaced inwardly of the corrugated part, an auxiliary part having corrugations in an intermediate part, said last mentioned corrugations being spaced above the corrugations of the main part and said auxiliary part having holes in its outer corrugation.
2. A cover device of the class described, comprising a main cover part having a top portion provided with a central opening, a flat part surrounding the opening and having holes therein, and upwardly bowed corrugations in said top portion surrounding the flat part, and. an auxiliary cover part having a central depression removably fitting in the opening and a fiat part surrounding the depression and said auxiliary part having upwardly bowed corrugations therein surrounding the fiat part, the outer one of which has holes therein and means for spacing the corrugations and flat part of the auxiliary part from those of the main part.
3. A cover device of the class described, comprising a main cover part having a top portion provided with a central opening, a fiat part surrounding the opening and having holes therein and upwardly bowed corrugations in said top portion surrounding the flat part, and an auxiliary cover part having a central depression removably fitting in the opening and a fiat part surrounding the depression and said auxiliary part having upwardly bowed corrugations therein surrounding the flat part, the outer one of which has holes therein and means for spacing the corrugations and flat part of the auxiliary part from those 5 circular corrugated lid having air vents around its outer portion and a protruding center portion, a main circular corrugated lid having air vents arotuid its central portion and a center hole, said protruding center portion fitting snugly into said center hole, holding said lids detachably together.
5. In a cover device of the class described, a pair of circular corrugated lids spaced nestingly apart, said space being irregular in line, one lid having air vents around theouter portion, and the other lid having air vents around the central portion, said lids being detachably connected together.
