2 Claims. 01. 211-72) This application is a division of my copending application for patent for Display stand, filed November 17, 1937, Serial No. 175,112.
The invention relates to display stands, and particularly to display stands of the knockdown type.
One object of the invention is to provide a display stand of knockdown or collapsible character comprising appropriate elements formed of suitable material such as cardboard, boxboard, corrugated board or the like, and capable, when collapsed or knocked down, of being shipped in flat condition. Thus, although the display stand may be made in a variety of sizes to suit various purposes of use, it may be so packed for shipment as to occupy very little space.
Another object of the invention is to provide a multi-sided, or polygonal, display stand of collapsible or knock-down form, which, when set up for use provides a plurality of surfaces for the reception of advertising and other display matter printed or otherwise applied to them, as desired, and a top upon which may be supported articles of merchandise, and the like, for display.
A further object of the invention is to supplement the display features of the stand with a tray or trays preferably carried by a side or sides of the stand and so constructed that, although when in set up or display condition, they form pocket-like receptacles offstanding from such side or sides, they may be collapsed and folded flat against the collapsed and folded body of the stand.
As disclosed in my copending application referred to the display stand is provided with an interior bracing structure comprising a plurality of cooperating elements which are initially of flat form, or may be converted to fiat form for shipping purposes.
The invention contemplates a display stand of knock-down or collapsible form, including a body member formed from a suitably scored and folded blank of appropriate, relatively stiff, material, which, when set up, provides a polygonal body; and a tray or trays carried by a side or sides of said body member, each of said trays including a wall structure collapsible with respect to the body member, the walls of the wall structure provided with inwardly foldable flaps inter-engageable when inwardly folded to maintain the tray or trays in set up condition, and each of said trays provided with a bottom member adapted to be supported by the upwardly turned edges of said inwardly folded flaps, all as will be explained hereinafter more. fully and finally claimed. y
In the accompanying drawing illustrating the invention, inthe several .figures of which like parts are similarly designated, Figiue l is a perspective view of the display stand of the invention in set up condition, 3
Fig. 2 illustrates the body member and its attached tray structures in collapsed or folded condition.
Fig. 3 is an end View showing the parts partially collapsed or folded, and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view, taken on the line 44 of Fig. 1, and illustrating the tray construction.
The display stand includes a body member a formed of a blank of suitable material, such as cardboard, boxboard, corrugated board, or the like, suitably scored as indicated at l to provide a plurality of sides 2 (six in the form shown), the edges of the blank being brought together as indicated at 3 and appropriately secured as by metal stitches or staples 4. Attached by staples or the like 5 to selected sides of the body member thus formed are tray-forming members b comprising suitably scored and folded blanks, the edges of which are joined as indicated at 6 as by stitches or staples 1. Each of these tray blanks comprises similar front and back walls 8 and 9 respectively, each of which is provided with an inwardly foldable flap Hi, II, respectively, and side walls l2 and [3 each of which is provided with an inwardly foldable flap l4, I5.
When set up for display purposes, the display stand is maintained in rigid distended condition by an appropriate interior bracing structure, and is provided, preferably, with an appropriate polygonal top 0 disposed within the walls of the body member and supported therein by the bracing structure. This top may be provided with a finger hole Hi to facilitate its insertion and removal.
It will be obvious that, when in position, the top 0 serves as an additional bracing means for holding the body member, at least so far as its upper portion is concerned, in distended condition.
In setting up the trays b for display purposes, it is required only that they be distended from the position illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, that the flaps l0 and ll be folded inwardly and upwardly, and the flaps I4 and [5 then similarly folded inwardly and upwardly between the already folded flaps l0 and II, and with their lateral edges in frictional engagement with the adjacent faces thereof. This inwardly and upwardly folded arrangement of the flaps [0, II, I 4 and I5, as will be apparent from an inspection of Fig. 4, serves to maintain the walls of the trays in distended set up condition of tube form and, in addition, the free edges of the flaps will support; the bottoms d of the trays which bottoms comprise separate pieces disposed within the confines of the walls 8, 9, I2 and I3 and having their edges in contact with these walls, thus supplementing the flaps l0, II, M and IS in holding the tray. structures in distended, set up condition.
As hereinbefore mentioned, the display stand may support articles of merchandise, or the like, to be displayed, not on1y upon its top 0, but also within the pocket-like trays b, and its sides and other exposed surfaces may be appropriately ornamented or decorated, or may bear suitable advertising matter.
When knocked down and prepared for shipment, the body member w and its trays b will collapse into substantially flat form, as illustrated in Fig. 2, and all members of the bracing structure are preferably so formed that they may be disassembled and laid flat thereon, as may also the bottoms d of the trays and the top 0. This knocked-down assembly may then, if desired, be enclosed within a suitable shallow packing case, or otherwise wrapped for shipment, as may be found expedient.
Various changes and modifications are considered to be within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the following claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a knockdown display stand, a collapsible multi-sided body member adapted to be set up in polygonal formation, and a knockdown collapsible tray structure carried by a side of said body member, said tray structure including a plurality of walls each of which is provided with an inwardly foldableflap, said flaps interengaging when inwardly folded to maintain the tray structure in distended set up condition, and a bottom member supported upon the upturned edges of said flaps.
2. In a knockdown display stand, a collapsible multi-sided body member adapted to be set up in polygonal formation, and a. knockdown collapsible tray structure carried by a side of said bodyfinember, said tray structure including four walls each of which is provided with an inwardly foldable flap, said flaps when inwardly folded being so disposed that the flaps of two of the walls have their lateral edges in engagement with adjacent faces of the flaps of the other walls to thus maintain the tray structure in distended rectangular condition, and a bottom member supported upon the upturned edges of said flaps within the space defined by said walls.
