e claims. (ci. 22e- 68)- This invention relates generally to garment devices. More particularly, my invention relates to a combination garment device adapted for multiple purpose use.
One of the objects of my invention is to pro- Vide a device of the character described which shall be a general improvement in the art, and which is designed to be used as an improved packing aid and which is also adapted for use as an improved garment hanger and improved garment size indicator.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which shall comprise relatively few and simple parts, which shall be easy to assemble, which shall be inexpensive to manufacture, which shall be highly eflicient and practical in use, and which shall be time saving to a high degree.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exempliiied in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown one of the various possible embodiments of this invention,
Fig. 1 is a plan view, slightly in perspective, of a garment device construction in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross-sectional view taken substantially on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross-sectional view taken substantially on vthe line 3,-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig 4 is a development view of a portion of the device illustrated in Fig. 1 showing a form of construction thereof;v v
Fig. 5Vis a view similar to Fig. 1 but illustrating a modified form of my invention;
Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but of reduced size and illustrating one of the uses of the device;
Fig. '7 is an enlarged detail of a portion of the device illustrated in Fig. 1; and V Fig. 8 is a perspective view, partly sectional, illustrating another use of my device.
In manufacturing establishments where dresses and similar garments are manufactured, the general procedure heretofore practised after the dress Was substantially completed was to mount thedress on a hanger and then hang the same on a rack. In order to distinguish the different sizes Aof the garments, they were generally arranged in groups on the rack with a marker indicating the particular size of each group, such marker being an independent member generally hung upon the rack between the groups of dresses. In filling an order, the dresses were then taken off the rack in accordance with the sizes required and packed 5 in cardboard shipping boxes of more or less. standardized size. The method heretofore iollowed'in packing was to take each dress off its hanger and then, after folding the same, place it inside the box, and Vto place upon the folded dress in the boxa flat sheet of cardboard slightly smaller than the box. Another folded dress was then placed upon the cardboard sheet and a second cardboard' sheet placed upon the second folded dress,.and so on until the desired number of 15 dresses was packed.
.It was found that this procedure consumed much valuable time, since it was necessary in each instance to take the dress off the rack and carefully remove the same from the hanger, after which the hanger had to be'deposited in a receptacle or placed back again on the rack. Also, it was found that when packing the dresses as above described, upon arrival at their destination, the dresses were wrinkled and creased since they had 25 become shaken up and displaced during transportation.' Also, according to the method heretofore practised, when the dresses were received by the retailer, it Was necessary for him to separately remove each dress and each cardboard 30 from the box and to then mount the dress upon a hanger, so that they could be placed on suitable racks for sale.
By my invention, I have provided a garment device by means of which I am able to overcome 35 the above described disadvantages and which is., at the same time, attended with additional advantages which will become apparent as the description proceeds.
Referring now inv detail to the drawing, there 40 is discloseda garment device It constructed in accordance with' my invention and comprising a fiat sheet of material such as cardboard or ythe like, having a main body portion Il anda portion l2 projecting outwardly from the center of 45 theftop edge thereof, The portions!! and I2 are preferably made of one piece of material. The portion l2 is provided with a notch I4 so disposed and designed as to forma hook member i5 adapted to be hung upon a suitable garment 50 rack. The body portion H is shaped, yas shown in the drawing, to conform generally to that of the human ligure, 4having shoulder portions l i a and restricted waistline areas IIb. Overlying the portion l2 is a layer I6 of the same material 55 Y as that of the said portion I2, and which is shaped to register with the contour of the portion I2. The layerv I6 and the portion I2 may be Ymade of Y `one piece of material and folded over on a fold line II so as to bein superimposed and registered relationship, as shown in Fig. 4 ofthe drawing.
vided with a window opening 2I through which one of the numbers on the dial 201s' visible. To facilitate the rotation of the dial 20, the lower edge of the layer I6 may be provided with a notch 22 so that access may be had to the said dial which may be .manually operated. Y
It is thus seen from, the above description that I have provided a multiple use garment device Y which is adapted for one of its uses, as a garment hanger and which is also adapted to be used as a size indicator so that. in the factory, when the dress is finished and is hung upon a rack, it will merely be necessary to turn the dial 20 to register the proper size withinY the opening 2 I, and to ,v leave'the dress hangingY until it is. ready to be Vshipped out. Itis also notedthat the shaped con- Y tour of the body portionl I will tend to maintain f the garment GV iny proper shape, asV shown inV Fig. 6 of the drawing. :To prevent wear on the hook member I5 due to the frictional engagement of the notch I4 with the rack, I prefer to reinforce the free edges of the portion I2 as well as the free edges of the layer I6 by a metallic channelshaped strip 25, asshown. The reinforcing strips 25 will also tend to prevent the wearing away and separation ofthe folded edge I'I. Y
In Fig, 8 of the drawing, I have shown how my.
improved multiple usegarment device may be employed to save time and also to more efciently pack a number of dresses for shipment. In packing for shipment, the packer need only take theV dresses of required size off the rack, asV they are j hung-on the device and in thecondition as shown in Fig. 6 of the drawing, and to merely fold over the bottom portion of the dress G toroverlie the upperfportion thereof, using the bottom edge I Ici' of the main body portion I I as a fold line and to then place the folded dress in the standard size packing box B, as shown. In this way, it is seen that the dresses which are packed in the packing box cannot shift out of position Yduring transportation, and will therefore be received at their destination inunwrinkled condition, suitable Yfor `hanging upon the racks forsale without the'neceso Vsity of pressing theY same. Also, Vit is `seen that much time is savedinfnot having to remove each dress from its hangereither at the'place of Vshipfment or at the destination.
' In Fig. 5,' I have Vshowna modified form of my Y invention, in which the overlying ,layer I6,.instead of beingfolded over on a vertical fold line I'I., as in Fig. 4', is cut out `from the'body of the material rof :the portion II and'frolded over one horizontal Afold lin'e 28, leaving the cut out portion 30 conforming to the contour of theV portion I6'. In .this
form of construction, instead of the bottom notch s 22 to facilitate the operation of the dial, there is provided anotch 22 disposed adjacent one side edge of the layer I6. In otherrespects, the modijcation illustrated in Fig. 5 is the same as that shown in Figs. 1 4. Y
While in the drawing I have shown one size of device I0, it is understood that my invention may be applied to any other suitable size, `designed to tV in larger or smaller packing boxes. Also, if desired, the device I0 illustrated in the drawing may be provided with a fold line III in the body portion I I (see Fig. 6) so that when packing the same in a smaller size shipping box, it may be twice folded over.
It will thus be seenV that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical Yuse.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made inl the embodiments above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shownl in the accompanying drawing is to beV interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense. n
Having thus described my invention, I vclaim as new and desire to secure byLetters.l Patent;
