ermany November '25, 1938 5 Claims. (01. 22H?) The subject matter of the invention is a method of filling and sealing fiat bags, which is distinguished by its particularly simple nature.
The known machines for filling and sealing flat bags are comparatively complicated and bulky in design. They require a relatively large amount of space and are also expensive to produce. To reduce the cost of production a new method is proposed, which is considerably more simple than that made use of in the known filling and sealing machines, which usually possess one, or two, re-
volving devices or long belt conveyors.
The new method resides principally in the fact that the flat bags, taken from a stack, are moved in the open condition to the filling point, where they are engaged by a double gripper, which on the one hand conducts the bags from the filling point to the gumming and sealing point, and on the other hand at the same time passes 20 the bags, which at the gumming point have been furnished with adhesiveandfolded,tothe pressing point, from where they proceed in the sealed and finished condition to the discharge. Owing to this measure not only a second revolving device is dispensed with, but as a matter of fact the entire revolver is for the greater part rendered unnecessary altogether, since in a manner of speaking merely a revolver segment is employed, which oscillates between the filling point and the gumming or the gumming and pressing point.
Filling and sealing machines operating according to this method may be made extremely simple in their complete design- They require little space, canbe designed on simple lines, and are readily accessible in all parts.
Figs. 1 to 5 show details of a filling and sealing machine for fiat bags operating according to the new method. Fig. 1 is an elevational view of the fiat bag extraction. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the machine. Fig. 3. shows 'details of the pressing point, Fig. 4 the gumming, folding and sealing device and details of the movement of the nippers on the gripper 'arm, and Fig. 5 the gripper arm with its two pairs of nippers in plan.
The operation is as follows:
The empty flat bags 2 are taken from the stack of bags I by a wedge-shaped bag opener 3 secured to an oscillatory arm 5, which in turn is mounted on the rod 4, which moves upwards and downwards.
After the empty fiat bags have been placed on the bag opener they are conducted in the open condition to the filling point 6 by a rocking of the arm 5 .in the direction of the arrow. The material to be filled in. passes from the container 1 into the measuring device 8, and is conducted from there in definite quantities into the filling hopper 6. The material then accordingly runs into the bag when the latter islocated below the filling point. 5
The fiat bags filled at the filling point are picked up by an oscillatory gripper arm 9. This gripper arm, as shown in Fig. 5, is of T-shaped design. On its two lateral arms there are mounted pairs of nippers l and II. In accordance with Fig. 4, these nippers are moved over the levers I2, l3 and H by the tie rod I5. The entire gripper arm 9 together with the tie rod I-performs by means of the shaft IS, on which it is mounted, a rotary movement.
If the pairs of nippers ID are located at the filling point 6, the arm 5 moves the opened fiat bags into position. These are filled, and at the same time the nippers In close and firmly grip the fiat bag. When the filling operation has been completed the gripper arm swings in the direction of the, arrow until the filled fiat bag gripped by the nippers III has been moved into position below' the gumming and sealing, point (Fig. 4). On an arm l'l rocking in the direction of the arrow there is pivotally mounted at this point a second arm l8, on which there is provided the gumming strip l9. Upon the return movement of the arm H the arm I8 also swings back, the gumming strip l9 moving into contact with the gumming roller .20 and there picking up adhesive which, upon the forward movement of the arms I! and I8, is transferred to the fiat bag 2. After the adhesive has been applied to the flap 0f the filled fiat bag the folding knife 22 rocking about the pivot 2! moves towards the front, whilst at. the same time a folding bar moves out of the position 23 into the position 24. The folding bar, which moves along a circular path, is secured to a toothed wheel 25, which is actuated by the toothed segment 28.
After the filled. and sealed flat bag has been firmly gripped at the gumming point by the folding bar 24 the nippers I!) open, whereupon the gripper arm 9 again returns to its initial position. Upon repetition of the operation the nippers II also close together with the nippers l0 and pick up the closed flat bag at the gumming point. When the gripper arm then again moves forwards the filled and sealed fiat bags pass to the pressing point where, in accordance with Fig. 3, they are again firmly compressed and scaled down by the pressing jaw 21. The pressing device is actuated by the tie rod 28 by way of the angle lever 29.
After the fiat bag has been firmly sealed at the pressing point the nippers ll open, and the gripper arm again returns. During this time the fiat bags are still held by the pressing Jaws, and
are released when the gripper arm no longer forms an obstruction. They fall on to the sheet 30 secured to the arm 3|, which is rotated by the shaft 32. In this connection it assumes a vertical position, so that the filled fiat bags 33 are transferred to the discharge 34 in the upright condition.
The filling and sealing machine for fiat bags as described in the above represents merely a possible embodiment, in which the pieces of work or the fiat bags are moved'along a circular path. There is no objection also to conveying the perform a straight or any other desired movement.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention, and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is:
1. In an apparatus for filling and sealing fiat bags, means for extracting the bags from a stack, opening them and conducting them to the filling point in the open condition, and means including a swingable T-shaped gripper having a nipper on each of the arms of the T of which one nipper engages the bags and conducts them from the filling point to a gumming, folding and sealing point, and the other nipper conveying bags which at the gumming point have been furnished with adhesive and folded to a pressing point.
2. In an apparatus for filling and sealing fiat bags, means for extracting the bags from a stack, opening them and conducting them to the filling point in the open condition, a double gripper adapted to perform a swinging movement, two pairs of nippers on the said gripper, the one of the said pairs of nippers engaging the bags at the filling point and conducting them to a gumming, folding and sealing point, and the second pair of nippers conveying the said bags to 8' pressing point, and means for passing the sealed bags to the discharge.
3. In an apparatus for filling and sealing fiat bags, means for extracting the bags from a stack, opening them and conducting them to the filling point in the open condition, a double gripper adapted to perform a swinging movement, two pairs of nippers on the said gripper, the one of the said pairs of nippers engaging the bags at the filling point and conducting them to a gumming, folding and sealing point, and the second pair of nippers conveying the said bags from the gumming, folding and sealing point to a pressing point, means for engaging the said bags at the pressing point to permit of release and return of the said nippers from the pressing point to their initial position, and means for passing the sealed bags to the discharge.
4. In an apparatus for filling and sealing fiat bags, means for extracting the bags from a stack, opening them and conducting them to the filling point in the open condition, a double gripper adapted to perform a swinging movement, two pairs of nippers on the said gripper, the one of the said pairs oi nippers engaging the bags at the filling point and conducting them to a gumming, folding and sealing point, and the second pair of nippers conveying bags from the gumming, folding and sealing point to a pressing point, jaws at the pressing point which firmly grip the top of the bag to permit of release and return of the said second pair of nippers to their initial position, and means for passing the sealed bags to the discharge. 5. In an apparatus for filling and sealing fiat bags, means for extracting the bags from a stack, opening them and conducting them to the filling point in the open condition, means including a swingable T-shaped gripper having a nipper on each of the arms of the T of which one nipper engages the bags and conducts them from the filling point to a gumming, folding and sealing point and the other nipper conveying bags which at the gumming point' have been furnished with adhesive and folded to a pressing point, an armrocking towards and away from the said pressing point, and a bag depositing means mounted on the said arm and conveying filled and sealed bags from the pressing point to the discharge.
