IMPROVEMENT IN HARVESTER-CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 216,941, dated July 1, 1879; application filed November 25, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS M. OoNNER, of Winterset, Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Harvester-Cutters, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cutterbar with my improvement attached. Fig. 2 is the same view with a cutting-section and key removed. Figs. 3 and 4 are views of the cutting-sections.
My improvement relates to the setting and securing the shanks of movable cutting sections, such as those used in all kinds of harvesters, reapers, mowers, and headers; and it consists in the manner hereinafter described and claimed for securing the cutting-sections on the bar.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the exact manner in which I have carried it out.
In the drawings, A represents the sicklebar, provided with the longitudinal dovetail groove a. B shows one of the cutting-sections, provided with the lug b on the under side, fitting snugly in the dovetail groove a. This lug has a cross-slot, 0, corresponding with the cross-groove D on the sickle-bar, and when in position, as shown in Fig. 1, the key E is passed into the slot, securely fastening the section B in position. The other cuttingsections, B, are provided with lugs Z), fitting in the dovetail groove a, and when these sections have been placed in position, as shown in Fig. 2, the section B is slipped on, and the key E is passed into the cross-slots G and D, and the sickle is ready for use.
To remove the sections from the sickle-bar, it is only necessary to withdraw the key E, and the sections can be readily withdrawn from the bar.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim as new is- A sickle bar provided with a longitudinal dovetail groove, a, in combination with movable cutting-sections B, provided with lugs b,
fitting the dovetail groove, the section B,with its lug provided with the transverse groove D, and the key E, passing through the lug of section B, whereby the other sections are secured in position, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
