FATEN-T OFFICE 2 Claims.

The invention relates to a bed or the like and more especially to collapsible or foldable beds.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of a bed of this character, wherein a sectional case creates the head and foot pieces to the bed and when these sections are together the bed is folded and its mattress carrier concealed from view, being enveloped or incased, thus the bed in this condition occupies a minimum space within a room or other enclosure thus such bed is adaptable for service in congested quarters, for example, in apartment houses or other edifices.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a bed of this character, wherein the mattress together with the bed clothing or coverings can be concurrently-folded and confined within the case and in this manner the bed with its adjuncts being together, the said bed being readily operated for the extending thereof from collapsed folded condition for occupancy and is possessed of sturdiness and continuity of use.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of a bed of this character, wherein the same involves refinements over the subject matter of an application for United States Letters Patent filed August 7, 1935, and serially numbered 35,176.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of a bed of this character, which is simple in its construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in operation, readily and easily folded or unfolded, neat in appearance and imitative of a wardrobe or otherlike article of furniture when in its folded condition, occupying the least possible space when not in use, assuring comfort to a user, and inexpensive to manufacture.

With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which disclose the preferred and modified forms of embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.

Similar reference characters indicate correspending parts throughout the several views in the drawings.

Referring to the drawings in detail, particularly Figures 1 to 7 and 9 inclusive, the bed constituting the present invention is of a collapsible or foldable type and A designates generally the case formed in two sections Ill and H, respectively, for matching relation to each other and the section It constitutes the head piece while the section H constitutes the foot piece of the bed. This section H at the upper portion thereof is cut into for a front cover piece l2 being hinged at 13 to the section Ill at the top thereof giving access to the interior of the case when the sections l0" and H are together. The cover section #2 swings vertically to opening and closing positions and by reason ofits shape when in closed position' with the sections it and H together functions in holding such sections in this position. The section ID at its base carries a resilient tread M while in suitable clearances in the base of the section ll are located rollers l5 being journaled at It so that this section I! when pulled outwardly away from the section Ill, 40 the said rollers l5 traction a foundation or flooring' thereby assuring easy folding or unfolding of the bed while the section [0 through the tread I4 is held stationary.

Arranged between the sections l0 and H is a mattress spring or carrier involving a pair of open frames IT and 18, respectively, these being similar to each other and at their outer side rails l9 have in association therewith hinge joints 20 swingingly connecting the frames I1 and I8 together intermediate of the bed. These open frames have spring-tensioned fabric coverings 2| so that a mattress will be supported thereon against sagging and for service.

Arranged on opposite sides of the frames I1 and I8 and fitted interiorly of the sections l0 and l i at the upper portions thereof are perpendicularly arranged elongated slotted guides 22 while fixed to the bases of the sections I0 and II interiorly of the latter are bearings 23 and shiftably and pivotally engaged in the guides 22 and pivoted to the said bearings 23 at 24 and 25, respectively, are the operating end levers 25 and 21. respectively, of lazy tongs 28, one of the latter being at each side of the bed, the levers 26 being hinged together at 29 while the levers 21 are hinged together by the hinge joints 20 connecting the frames I1 and I8 together and on the eX- tending and contracting of the lazy tongs 28 the sections I0 and II are moved apart and brought together while concurrently unfolding and folding with said tongs are the frames i1 and [8 with respect to each other.

At the hinge joint points 30 of the lazy tongs 23 are pivotally supported lifter arms 3|, these having the curved contact terminals 32 and are provided with elongated slots 33 for accommodating guide studs 34 carried by the levers 21 and the purpose of the arms 31 is for the lifting of the frames I! and I8 when in unfolded condition to a horizontal plane in alignment with each other and in this manner the mattress 35 is held for occupancy, the bed being extended from collapsed condition.

The mattress 35 is of a two-part build and carries zipper fasteners 36 at opposite sides thereof and at the meeting ends of the two parts thereof and these zipper fasteners singly afford a fold line and a hinge connection between the parts at opposite sides, being understood, of course, that when one zipper fastener is closed, the other zipper fastener is open thus the closed zipper fastener functioning as a hinge for the folding of the mattress concurrently with the folding of .the frames I! and I8 when carrying said mattress.

The base of the section II] interiorly of the lat ter at the center thereof is fitted with a latch guide 3'! for a latch 38 carried by the section Ii so that the said latch 38 will be directed into a keeper notch 39 in the section 10 on the bringing together of the sections l0 and H and thus fastening the same in this condition. The latch involves a tensioning spring 39 and a releasing rod or plunger readily accessible at the cover i2 opening in said section II so that the latch can be manually released when it is desired to extend the bed for use.

The contacts 32 of the arms 3| play in seats 4i provided in the lower edge of the side rails of the frames I1 and I8 during folding and unfolding activity thereof.

At the hinged joints 20 is the depending hanger 42 through which are laced crossed cables 43 diagonally disposed beneath the frames l1 and 42 serves as a brace between the spring frames I! and I8.

In Figure 8 of the drawings there is shown a slight modification of the bed, wherein the levers 45, which are similar acting to the levers 21, have associated therewith the lifter arms 46, these being pivoted at 41 directly to the frames 48, which are similar to the frames I1 and i8, and such arms 46 are pivoted at 49 to levers 50, these being pivoted at the hinges 5| for the levers 45 and also slidably and pivotally fit at 52 in slotted hanger links 53 which at 54 are pivoted to the hinge between the frames 48 and the hinge joint between the levers 45. The levers 46 are slotted at 56 for the pivots 51 in the levers 45 so that the frames 48 and the said levers 45 will approach each other on the folding of the bed.

The cover l2 when in open position rests upon the top of the section ill of the bed as is clearly shown in Figure 1 of the drawings.

The hanger 42 carries clips for the cables 43.

It is, of course, understood that the bed may be made of any desirable material and different sizes and widths.

What is claimed is:

1. A collapsible bed comprising a case having separable enclosing sections constituting head and foot pieces, lazy tongs between and at opposite sides of the sections and having end levers pivotally and slidably connected to said pieces, respectively, and extended and contracted by movement of said pieces, a foldable mattress carrier having hingedly connected sections supported by said lazy tongs, the hinge connection of the sections being pivoted to the lazy tongs intermediate of the extent thereof, and lifter arms pivotally and slidably linked with said lazy tongs and arranged at opposite sides of the pivotal connection of the sections of the mattress carrier with the lazy tongs and active on the sections of said mattress carrier for supporting the said sections in a horizontal plane in alignment with each other when the said lazy tongs are extended.

2. A collapsible bed comprising a case having separable enclosing sections constituting head and foot pieces, lazy tongs between and at opposite sides of the sections and having end levers pivotally and slidably connected to said pieces, respectively, and extended and contracted by move ment of said pieces, a foldable mattress carrier having hingedly connected sections supported by said lazy tongs, the hinge connection of the sec tions being pivoted to the lazy tongs intermediate of the extent thereof, lifter arms pivotally and slidably linked with said lazy tongs and arranged at opposite sides of the pivotal connection of the sections of the mattress carrier with the la zy tongs and active on the sections of said mattress carrier for supporting the said sections in a horizontal plane in alignment with each other when the said lazy tongs are extended, said lifter arms being provided with elongated slots, and guide studs on said lazy tongs and accommodated in said slots.
