Description
J. H. STAMP.
Fruit-Jar.
No. 216,707. Patented June 17, 1879.-
i 1 mm" x-- UNITED 'STATESPATENT OFFIoEI JOHN H. STAMP, OF WHEELING, WEST VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONEHALF HIS RIGHT TO AROHIBALD W. PAULL, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN FRUIT-JARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 216,707, dated J unc 17, 1879; application filed i May 15, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. STAMP, of Wheeling, in the county of Ohio and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Jars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same,
reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates specially to vessels for preserving fruit, oysters, lard, and such like articles; and it consists of a simple clamping device for holding the lid in position on the mouth of the vessel, whereby a hermeticallysealed package is secured.
This clamping device is shown fully in the drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of ajar with the clamping device attached thereto; Fig. 2, a vertical central section of the same.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts.
The letter F represents the body of the jar; G, a flat annular seat in the neck of the jar to receive the lid; D, rubber ring to form air-tight bearing for lid. 0 is the lid; K, projecting rim or flange on the neck of thejar; E, vertical recesses or passages across the flange. A A are metal clamps, having cross-arms bb, extending across the top of the jar, the ends of which turn down at right angles over the exterior face of the flange and back underneath the edge to the neck of thejar, forming a square ledge, a.
B is a thumb-screw. working through the center of the clamp, having a washer, c, on the end of the screw-bolt.
V The recesses E through the flange permit the ends of theclamp-arlns b b to pass downward the proper distance to be turned around under the projecting flanges.
The application of the thumb-screw B presses the lid down upon its seat, thus forming a hermetically-sealed package, which can readily be opened at will.
Having described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
]S:\ The combination, with the jar having the flange K, provided with the rectangular recesses E, of the cover entirely inclosed by the said tlange, the metal clamps A A, crossing one another at right angles, the thumb-screw B, and the washer c, all constructed and arranged substantially as described and shown.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereunto affix my signatureiu presence of two witnesses.
JOHN H. STAMP. Witnesses W; H. BROWN, E. B. HOWARD.
