IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-'HOSE JACKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 216,639, dated June 17, 1879; application filed October 7, 1878.
To all rwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES BALLMRE, of the city of Peoria, in the county of Peoria, in the State of Illinois, have invented an Improvement in Fire-Hose J ackets; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,
0., Fig. I.
I use to form my jacket two half-cylinders of a caliber to suit. the hose. An attached semicircular band strengthens and forms a frame around the center of the same, and is jointed together at the junction of the halfcylinders, and at the opposite side, where the halves of said band meet, is prolonged into arms or jaws, for the purpose of exerting hand or foot pressure to close "the jacket upon the hose, which arms, when closed, are de tained by means of a lateral clamp, pivoted to the band prior to the use of the screw, for bringing down the upper half-cylinder""upon the rupture, which completes the operation. A soft lining of brous material-as thick cloth-may be used as a lining for the cylinder, to act as a dam for any water that may leak from the rupture. i
In` the drawings, A is the lower half-cylinder, attached at its center to the band D, g, annular grooves to receive elastic dams; e, soft tibrous lining; B, upper halfcylinder, suspended on point of a hand-screw, I, which passes through the upper hoop or band, C. This half-cylinder has the same lining and grooves as the other, and both have collars f to receive the band C D and prevent the cylinder B from swinging laterally at the ends. O, upper band, hinged at a to the lower band, D, at the junction of the half-cylinders, and carrying the hand-screw I. and ending in an arm, F, adjoining the similar arm, E, of the lower band, D; D, lower band, carrying halfcylinder A and an arm, E, to which is pivl F to the tightest degree before applying the screw I. This detent G passes into a recess, i, in the sides of the jaws E F, the better to apply the abutment of the handle b to the surface of the jaw F.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. The hose-jacket composed of a hinged band, half of which is rigidly attached to one half-cylinder, (orhalf ofjacket,) while the other half cylinder or jacket is held in the other halt of said band by means of a screw, said band having adetent on the opposite side to the hinge, substantially as and for "the purposes described. h
2. The hose-jacket composed of a hinged central band, the lower halt' carrying one half cylinder or jacket, the other halfjacket being held within the corresponding part of said band by means of a screw, said bands having their joint jaws-extended into arms (on the opposite side to the hinge) securable by means of a lateral clamp pivoted to one of said jaws or arms, and having a screw fitted with a handle, b, for exerting further pressure upon the Y jaws after said detent Gr is in place., substantially as and for the purposes described.
3. In a hose-jacket ot' two half-cylinders, the combination, with same, of band C D, screw I, hinge a, and jaws E F, with detent G, substantially as and for purposesset forth.
4. In a hose-jacket composed of two halt'- cylinders inclosed in a jointed loop or band, a screw, l, in combination with said band and one of the half-cylinders, substantially as and for the purposes described.
5. The combination and arrangement, with Vhalf-cylinders A B, of jointed bands C D, when Witnesses: j
GHAELEs J. RoBERTs, E. THURLOW.
