Description
J. TRENT. Lamp-Burner.
No. 216,542. Patented Junel'l, 1879..
NVFETERS. FHOT0-L|THOGRAPHEE WASHINGTON. 0 c,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
JOSEPH TRENT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO THE MANHATTAN BURNER COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-BURNERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 216,542, dated J une 17, 1879; application filed April 3, 1879.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J osnrrr TRENT, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burners for Kerosene-Lamps, whichimprovements are fully setforth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of my improved burner, showing the chimney in position. Fig. 2 is a top view of the inner guard. Fig. 3 is a section of the burner on a line which divides the chimney-holding catch longitudinally. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of outer cone, of ordinary construction; and Fig. 5, a like view of the inner cone or'fiame-guard.
My invention relates to the peculiarly-constructed inner cone and a catch for holding the chimney in place.
My improved guard has two sides,B, which converge until they reach the flame-slot, thus causing the air to impinge against the side of the flame and feed it with oxygen at that point, while the other two sides, A, are vertical or straight, and carry the air along the edge of the flame, thereby shaping it to the chimney, and feeding it with oxygen at a point higher than by the guards ordinarily used. This, however, is done without positively deflecting the air into the flame at its edges, as would be the case with the curved overhanging surfaces of the double cone or deflector which has sometimes been used.
To the plate upon which rests the cone is attached a spring-catch, E, of the construction shown. This catch is bent into a V shape, and normally stands out from the chimney; but a slide is attached to the inner arm of the V by a lug Working in a slot, and is made to pass over the outer arm of the V, which projects above the chimney-gallery, and is there curved to conform to the chimney; and this slide, when raised, draws the two arms together, and presses the rounded part against the chimney and holds it firmly in position.
I claim- 1. In combination with the slotted deflector and the wick-tube, the guard having the converging sides B, opposite the sides of the tube,
and the straight sides A, opposite the edges of the tube, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The catch E and slide F, combined in a lamp-burner, as and for the purpose set forth.
