HAIR TRIMMER v Filed Aug. 31. 1937 JNVENTOR. ffAee/.so/v 'Lew/s BY M ATTORNEY Pafenied July 1'1, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT oFFlfcE HAIR TRIMMER Harrison Lewis, San Francisco, Calif. Applimuon-August 31, 1937, serial No. 161,777
' v,2 claims. (o1. 3o9o) The invention, Vin general, relates to blade and comb combinations for simultaneouslylcombing and trimming hair and more palticularly relates to a device to which practically any of the commercial types of safety razors may readily be attached for the hair trimming operation.
A primary object of my inventionis to provide a device of the aforementioned nature which is characterized by its ability to elect smooth and symmetrical trimming and thinning of the hair, eyebrows, burn-sides, mustache or beard and which, particularly in the trimming` of the hair, does not leave the hair in a so-calledvstep or ragged condition.
Another important object of my inventionis to provide a compact hair'trimming device to which safety razorsof almost any type or design may be attached in various desired angular relationships thereby affording a Wide range of adjustability between blade and comb for trimming the hair to any desired length.
Another object of the invention is to provide a hair trimmer of the aforementioned character which can be used effectively, rapidly and skillfully by even inexperienced persons without likelihood of injury to the scalp or face.
A still further object of my invention is to provide an eflicient hair trimmerr which can be constructed relatively inexpensively and which has a minimum of parts for assembly.
Other objects of the invention together with Vmany of its advantageous features willappear from the following description of .a preferred and one modified embodiment of my Ainvention illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
While I have shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, together with a modification thereof, in the accompanying drawing, it is to be understood that I am not to be limited to the embodiments illustrated, as my invention, as defined in the appended claims, can be embodied in a plurality and variety of forms.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a preferred embodiment of my invention.
Figure 2 is an elevational View, partly in section, villustrating the attachment Vof a lconvex base type of safety razor to the preferred embodiment of my invention.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of a modified embodiment of the invention.
Figure 4 is an elevational View, partly in section, illustrating the attachment of a straight back safety razor to the preferred embodiment of my invention.
In its preferred form, the hair trimmer of Vmy invention preferably comprises a body having a substantially at bottom, an arcuate end, and an upper surface which includes a comb with relatively long, uniformly spaced teeth merging 5 into a concave portion which, in turn, merges into a straight slanting portion, together with a pair of lugs integral with the sides of the body and overlying its upper surface, said lugs being provided with threaded apertures for the recepl tion of thumb-screws thus enabling safety razors of practically any design of head to be adjustably attached to the body for various angular l relationships between the lcomb of the body and the blade of the razor thereby affording triml ming of the hair to any desired length.
As illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawing, I preferably provide a body II which may be molded or cast from any suitable metal, such as brass, and which preferably includes a sub- 20 stantially at bottom I2 and an arcuate or rounded end I3. 'I'he body II preferably is provided with an upper surface which terminates at one longitudinal extremity in a comb I4 and I preferably construct thecomb portion of the 25 device with a plurality of relatively long, uniformly spaced teeth I6 terminating in rounded points Il. The upper surface of the body II preferably is divided into two main portions of Y which a concave portion I8 occupies the major 30 part of the surface. As illustrated, the `concave portion I8 merges at one longitudinal extremity with the comb I4 and at its other longitudinal extremity with a straight but slanting portion I9, the latter terminating at the rounded end I3 35 of the body. Preferably, the entire upper surface of the body II, exclusive of the teeth of the comb I4, is knurled, as at 2'I, to prevent likelihood of slippage between the head or cap of the razor and the body when the two are as- 40 sembled.
In accordance with the invention, the body I I is provided with a pair of lugs 22 which are formed integrally with the body II and conveniently extend from opposite sides of the body 45 ta-chment of a razor to the body and, hen'ce,.can 55 body H of my device.
be positioned at any suitable points on the body H for effecting this function.
In Figure 2 of the drawing, I have illustrated the attachment of a common type of presently marketed safety razor to the body H, such razor incorporating a base or cap section 21 for the blade 28 which is convex on its outer surface. As shown, the convex outer surface of the base or cap 21 of the razor 26 fits snugly upon the concave portion I8 of the body H of my device. In the position of the razor with respect to the body H illustrated, the relationship between the comb I4 of the body and the blade 28 is such that the teeth IB of the co-mb project an appreciable distance beyond the guard 29 of the razor and, in this relationship, relatively long lengths of hair may be trimmed. It is apparent that the razor 26 may be shifted with respect to the body H so that the handle 3l of the razor assumes a differently inclined position with respect to the body H than that shown and in so shifting the razor, the convex surface of cap 2l may be moved forwardly toward the comb 'lll or rearwardly toward the inclined portion I9 of the upper surface of body H thus variably adjusting the razor to the body H for long, medium or short trimming of the hair. This variable adjustment affords trimming of the hair of the scalp or trimming of burn-sides, eyebrows, mustache or beard to the desired degree and only requires a moment for the adjustment. Of course, after setting the razor in the desired positionY on the body H it requires only a turning of the thumb-screws 24 to engage the same firmly to the normally lower side of the guard 29 of the razor and thus attach the razor firmly to the body.
In Figure 4 of the drawing, I have illustrated the attachment of another type of conventionalV safety razor to the preferred embodiment of the invention, such type of razor incorporating a straight back or cap section. As shown, the outer surface of the straight back of the base 2? of this type of razor is brought into engagement with the straight but slanting portion I9 of the As with a razor having a convex base and illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawing, the straight-back razor 26 may be shifted on the slanting portion l5 of the device so .that the guard 29, blade 28 and handle 3l thereof will assume differently inclined positions with respect to the body H. This shifting of the razor may be forwardly toward the comb i4 of the device or rearwardly toward the arcuate end I3 of the body. Moreover, if desired, the razor 26 can be positioned on the slanting portion i9 of the device so that the leading edge of the blade 23 will be at an angle with respect to a transverse line through the comb i4 and thereby enhance the cutting quality vfor some sections of the head. Thus, the conventional safety razor of the straight back type, as illustrated in Figure 4 of the drawing in position on the device, can be variously adjusted with respect to the body H for long, medium or short trimming of the hair in the same manner as 'the convex base type of razor can be adjusted. While I have omitted showingthe lugs 22 and thumbscrews 24 from the illustration of Figure of the drawing, it is to be understood that these parts function with the straight back type of safety razor in the same manner as with the other types, see Figure 2 of the drawing, to hold the razor rmly attached to the body l l in the desired position.
aieaaoi A modified embodiment of my invention is illustrated in Figure 3 of the drawing. In this modification, which likewise can be molded or cast as a unit from any suitable metal, such as brass, I provide a body I I l having a substantially straight lower surface H2, a. straight end H3 and an upper surface provided at one longitudinal extremity with a comb H4. The comb H4 may be the same as the comb I4 of the embodiment shown in Figure 1 of the drawing and shall include a plurality of uniformly spaced, relatively long teeth H6 terminating in rounded points H1. The upper surface of this modification of the invention preferably is entirely concave in contour, the concave portion H8 extending from the comb l I4 to the end H3 of the body. Preferably, the juncture between the concave portion H8 of the upper surface and the end H3 of the body is rounded, as at H9. As illustrated, the concave upper surface H8 of body IH is knurled, as at I2l, so that the possibility of slippage between the body and the razor to be attached to the body will be reduced toa minimum. In this modication, I also provide a pair of lugs |22' on opposite sides of the body and these lugs may be formed integral with the body in its manufacture. Each lug is bent inwardly, as shown, toY overlie the upper surface of the body and each lug conveniently is provided with a threaded aperture |23 for the reception of a thumb-screw l24 which, when screwed down toward the surface H8 will engage the lower side of the guard of a safety razor and firmly attach the razor to the body HI. This modification is designed primarily` for use in conjunction with safety razors having a base or cap section for the blade with a convex outer surface which, of course, is complementary to the concave portion H8 of the upper surface of the body. Hence, the safety razor of the type mentioned can be readily and adjustably attached to the body IH for various angular relationships between the comb H4 and the blade of the razor to effect long, short or medium trimming of the hair.
It is clear from the foregoing as well as the views illustrated in the accompanying drawing that I have provided a practical, compact device having a combined slanting and concave surface for affording the attachment and close fitting thereto of safety razors of various designs or types having either a fiat or convex base or cap section. Such safety razors may be held firmly in place upon the body or device in any desired angular relationship so that the trimming of the hair may be effected easily and with optimum results as regards smoothness and symmetry and freedom from stepping or ragged ends. Moreover, that such device can be rapidly used by anyone regardless of prior experience in hair trimming without likelihood of any injury whatsoever. The device is especially useful for those i'n military or naval service Where it often occurs that a fresh, neatappearancemust be had on extremely short notice. The attachment of the safety razor to the device of my invention is a matter of only a few seconds and the hair, beard or burn-sides trimming requires but a few minutes. The device has exceptional value to those shut-in in hospitals, sanitoriums andthe like where access to barber shops is burdensome, if Vnot impossible. In addition tothe foregoing uses for individuals, it also is apparent that the device, with safety razor attached, may readily be employed to trim or thin-out the hair of animals with safety to the animal.
Due to the fact that the device or body can be molded or cast as a unit, With the exception of the small thumb-screws, the manufacturing cost of the body is materially lessened. Moreover, the device has a minimum of parts for assembly and for attaching a razor thereto, hence the possibility of losses of necessary equipment is reduced materially.
It is to be understood that the appended claims are to be accorded a range of equivalents commensurate in scope with the advance made over the prior art.
I claim:
1. A new article of manufacture to which a safety razor may be adjustably attached for trimming the hair to any desired length, said article comprising a body, a substantially flat bottom on said body, a concave surface on said body for cooperative adjustable engagement with the convex surface of a safety razor base, a comb merging with and extending from one longitudinal extremity of said concave surface, a flat yto said at bottom and being adapted to be adjustably engaged by a flat surface of a safety razor base, and means on said body for adjustably attaching a razor to said body.
2. A device for use in trimming the hair and to which a conventional safety razor may be attached, said device consisting of a body having a surface with a concave portion and a at portion contiguous to said concave portion; said flat surface being inclined with respect to said concave portion, comb teeth on said body extending from said concave portion of said surface, and a lug on said body having a threaded aperture therein through which a screw may be threaded to engage the base of a safety razor and thereby enable adjustable attachment of the safety razor to the body in any selected one of a plurality of angular or curved positions for trimming the hair short or long as desired.
