Description

S. M. PERRY.
Dust-Pan.
No. 216,529. Pat ented June 17, 1879.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SAMUEL M. PERRY, OF PLAINFIELD, NEW JERSEY.
IM PROVEM ENT IN DUST-PANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 216,529, dated June 17, 1879; application filed I May 19, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL MOODY PERRY,
of Plainfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey. have made an invention of a new and useful Improvement in Dust-Pans; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved dust-pan that can be used without the necessity of the persons stooping to remove the sweepings from the carpet or floor, and when not in use can be folded on the bot- Figure 1 representsa front view of a dustpan with my improvement applied thereto.
Fig. 2 represents a transverse section of the same. Fig. 3 represents a rear view, showing the manner of fastening the hinged socket to the back wall of the dust-pan. Fig. 4 represents a modification of my improvement.
A is an ordinary dust-pan, (represented in said drawings,) and has legs, on which the back part of the pan may rest. B is the hinged socket, having journals a a, which turn in bearin gs c a, secured to the inside of the dust-' pan. Fastened to the hinged socket is a button, D, so that when the hinged socket rests against the back wall of the pan it is held there by means of the button which secures it to the wall of the pan. The long handle 0 is then made fast in the socket by a pin, or by any other suitable means. A ring, E, is secured to the pan for the purpose of suspending it after being used.
When these pans are not in use, and are to be hung up or are to be packed for transportation, the hinged socket is to be unfastened from the back wall of the pan, and allowed to fold over so that it will rest on the bottom of the pan.
I do not confine myself to the hinged socket, nor to the hinging of the socket on the inside of the back wall and bottom of the dust-pan, as there are various ways of accomplishing the result as above described by 1neas, for instance, in place of the hinged socket and long handle, a long wire handle can be made and hinged to the pan by means of hearings; or the handle can be made all of one piece of wood with metal journals, and can be hinged to the pan, as aforesaid; or, in place of hinging the socket or long handle on the inside of the d ust-pan, it can be hinged on the outside of the back wall of the pan.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of a hinged socket or hinged handle with a household dust-pan, so hinged and arranged in connection with the bottom and back wall of said pan that it may be folded down parallel, or thereabout, with the bottom of the pan, so as to be suspended in a compact space when not in use, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of a hinged socket or hinged handle and a dust-pan with a button, or its equivalent, so arranged in connection 'with the back wall of the pan that it will secure the handle to the wall of the pan, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
Witness my hand this 26th day of April, A.
SAML. MOODY PERRY. Witnesses:
W. L. BENNEM, H. H. ISAAOS.
