This invention relates to an improvement in pocket lighters, and particularly to. that type in 'which the movement of. the snufer operates tov create a. spark to ignite the wick.

The object of the invention is to connect the operating-lever with the snuier so that a comparatively slight movement of the operatinglever will raise the snuffer to its full open position, and upon the release of the lever the snutler Will be returned to its fully-closed position. The invention resides in the construction as hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.

ln carrying out my invention, I employ a back it anda face II, which together form a casing. Mounted in back is the usual wick-chamber I2 from which a wick I3 projects from the upper end and which may be filled with burning fluid in the usual manner. Adjacent to the chamber is a tube Il which contains a spring I 5 which holds a flint I 6 against a sparking-wheel I1. This sparking-wheel 'is 'mounted ona rivet -IB extending between the back and'face, and upon which pivot the snuifcr I9 is also mounted. The -snuler has the usual cup whichin the closed position sets over the exposed end of the wick I3 and extinguishes it if lighted. Between the sparking-wheel I1 and the inner side. of the snuiTer is a sheet-metal spring 2I having a finger 22 adapted to engage with one of several shoul- .in the case and closes an opening formed in the side thereof., Pivotally mounted in the lever is a channel-shaped toggle-link 25 projectinginto the case and having its -inner end set over a post 26 "mounted on a connecting link 21 which, 5 in'turn, is mounted on a post 28 below the'togglelink 25, and mounted on a pin 29 at the inner end of the connecting-link is an actuating link 30, the opposite end of which is pivotally connected to the inner end of the snuier. A wire 10 spring 3| is mountedon the post 28, one end extending into engagement with the rivet 32 on which the lever 2l is mounted, and the other end bearing upon the pin 29, tending to lift the outer end of the connecting-link 21 so as to tend to 15 return the operating-lever 24 to its closed position and, at the same time, force the actuating link upward so as to close and hold the 'snuffer in its closed position. f

The invention .may be carried out in other specic ways than those herein set forth without departing from the spirit and essential characteristics of the invention, and the present embodiments are, therefore,- to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, and all changes coming Within the meaning and equivalency range of the appended claims are intended to be embraced therein.

` a coupling link pivotally connected with the lower end of the actuating-link, an operating-lever,

a toggle-coupling link connected with the operating-lever and Isaid link, and a spring bearing upon the lower end of and tending to raise the .actuating-link and move the operating-lever to the normal position.
