Description

INTERNALLY COOLED VALVE FOR COMBUSTION ENGINES Filed Feb; 24, 1937 Patented June 13, 1939 INTERNALLY COOLED VALVE FOR, COMBUSTION ENGINES Court Gross, Oslo, Norway, assignor to Motoraktieselskapet av 1935, Oslo, Norway 7 Application February 24, 1937, Serial No. 127,509
In Norway January 23, 193'! 1 Claim.
it has been suggested to cool the valves of internal combustion engines by means of a fluid such as air or gas or a liquid, but the known devices have the drawback that the cooling agent I 5 has either been caused to pass along the exterior surfaces of the valve on the parts thereof located in the channel controlled by' the valve, or has been let out of the valve adjacent these parts, for instance through holes in the valve head.
10 In accordance with the present invention the drawbacks of the known cooling systems are avoided by providing the hollow valve rod at two points with an intake and an outlet opening for the cooling medium, said cooling medium on its 1 way between the intake and outlet opening being caused by means of suitable guiding members to pass those parts in the interior of the valve which it is desired to cool.
when the valve cooling is carried out in this M manner, it is for instance possible to use pressure air, which after having cooled the valve is let out into the atmosphere or the cooling air may be drawn through the valve by connecting the outlet opening for the cooling air with some 5 part or the intake opening to the motor in which there is created a suction effect.
In valves the operation of which is wholly or partly caused by means of pressure air or pressure gas acting on a piston secured on the valve '0 rod, the cooling fluid for the interior parts of the valve may be obtained through a suitable opening leading from the valve interior to the pressure air cylinder. r In thiscase the valve rod may be surrounded ll by a stationary sleeve about which the pressure air piston fits tightly in such a. manner that the pressure air piston will automatically close the passage fromthe pressure air cylinder to the interior oi! the valve. at times when it is im- 40 portant to maintain the highest possible pressure in the pressure air cylinder.
n the drawing one embodiment of the in vention is illustrated. Fig. .1 shows a diagrammatic sectional view through an air cooled v'alve.
Fig. 2 is a section taken on lines 2-! of Fig;- l.
- again.
Fig. 3 is a section taken on lines 3-3 of Fig. 1.
0n Figure 1 there is shown the hollow valve the valve rod of which is provided with two openings 2 and 3.
In the form illustrated on Fig. 1 the hollow 5 valve rod is provided with two openings 2 and '3 for the cooling air, and the valve rodis surroiglded by a pressure air cylinder I with pressur air supply passage 5 and further carries pistop 8 which serves to replace wholly or partly the 10 valve vsprings. The valve is air pressure closed by upward pressure of the air supplied by conduit 5 acting against the lower side of piston 8. The valve may be operated by any well known means for opening.
The valve rod is further surrounded by the stationary sleeve 9; which is provided on its inner surface with the groove Ill connected with the pressure air cylinder I! through the narrow opening ll. an
The movement of the cooling air inside the valve is controlled by means of the guiding strip 4, but when the valve with its piston 8 moves downwards, opening [I is closed by means of the lower edge of the piston ll so that no air is lost and no corresponding decrease of pressure is caused in the moment in which it is important to have the strongest possible upward iorce acting on piston 8 to close the valve.
As it will be understood, the cooling may also be carried out by means of a liquid such as 011, said cooling oil being in that case collected after having passed the valve so that it may be used I claim: a
An internally cooled valve for internal combustion engines of that type which is wholly or partly operated by means of air under pressure comprising a hollow valve stem, 9. piston secured to said valve stem, a valve operating cylinder for 0 said piston and means for leading the outlet air from said cylinder through said hollow valve stem in order to utilize the pressure air for internally cooling said valve. 7
