This invention relates to a selective magazine pencil with twomutually shiftable and rotatable cases fixable in telescoped position, of which cases the rear one carries a feed rod and the front one the lead holders which are longitudinally shiftable by means of the feed rod against the action of return springs.
In the known selective magazinepencils of this type the feed rod fitted behind the rear ends of the lead holder shanks must also be pushed back for retracting the lead holders with the result that the cases come into the extended position v in which the pencil is of inconvenient length for carrying in the pocket. Furthermore, the push-- ing back of the feed rod necessary for carrying the pencil in the pocket renders inconvenient the manipulation in the known pencils.
This disadvantage is overcome by the pencil according to the invention, the novelty consists provided between the knobs n the rear end pieces ofthe lead holder shank 2i) in that space for accommtjyating the feed rod is a which knobs project throughthe longitudinal slots in the guide sleeve accommodating the shanks and their return 25,. springs, in such a manner that the feed rod does not require to pushed back for returning the lead holders into their inoperative position, but can be pushedfto the side in the space between the outer case and the guide sleeve so that it 30 passes out of the range of the knob actuallypushed forward.
' By the invention the two cases remain in the telescoped position even when the lead holders are retracted, with the result that the pencil in 35 its packed state is of a length which allows it to be comfortably placed in the waistcoat ,pocket.
To attain this packed state, it is only necessary to ex rt a brief turning pressure on the' two ,cases in opposite directions, by which pressure 40 the front end of the feed rod'slides oif. the guide knob of the lead holder shank and thus liberates the shankfor jumping back under spring action.

The guide sleeve 0 is closed at its front end by a plate 02 with apertures for the shanks es and forming an abutment for the front ends of return springs 1 whose rear ends bear against the rear end pieces ez under slight preliminary compression. A plate g is fixed on the rear end of the guide sleeve 0 and carries a locking knob h.

The front portion of this tube projecting from the bottom of cup i forms a pair of nippers n with claws m and inwardly directed protrusions m. The tube m also accommodates a rod 01 on the front end, of
which a disengaging knob 0 is mounted which extends into the pair of nippers nwhereas'its .rear end is screw-threaded for receiving an'end cap p. A ring m1 is inserted in the tube m serving as guide for the disengaging knob rod 01 and as abutment for a pressure spring (1 which bears at its rear end against a collar 02 fixed on rod .01.
This rod can be shifted in longitudinal direction in the tube m by pressure exerted on the cap (Fig. 3) but'not rotated. For this. purpose the 0 rod 01 has a longitudinal groove 03, into which projects a pin r or the like in the ring 1121 (Fig. l) If the disengaging knob 0 is forced between the protrusions m (Fig. 3) the claws 'm are spread.
The space between the tube m and the case b or the cup j inserted in this case serves as magazine for spare leads, the screw cap p. forming a lid for this magazine.
Colored marks m are provided on the periphery of the case a, and a mark in on the case b can be selectively brought into register with the marks a by turning the cases a and b the one relatively to the-other. Thus, the feed rod-7c in the annular space d comes behind the selected knob e1 which, if the cases a and b are pushed together,
is shifted from -the position shown in Fig. 1 into that shown in Fig. 2 against the action of its' range of the knob h engage over this knohand securely hold the two cases a and bin their tele scoped position. In this position the selective magazine pencil is so short, that it can be conviently. placed in the waistcoat pocket even with a lead in position for use. If, however, the lead holder e is to be retracted before placing the pencil in the pocket, it is not necessary to push apart the cases a and b but 'a slight relative turning movement between the twccases is sufiicient to bring the-feed rod k out of the range of the knob e1 .(Fig. 5). with thegresult that this knob becomes free and is moved back into its inoperative position under the action of its compressed return spring I. Only for advancing another lead into the writing position is it necessary to first shift apart the cases a and b. This is effectedin theexample illustrated with the aid of the pressurespring s which bears under slight compression at its front end against-the rear end of the case a and at its rear. end against the cup 1'. When the cases a and.b are telescoped, the pressure spring 8 is compressed (Fig. 3). It becomes operativefwhenthe nippers n are disengaged from the knob h, this being effected by pressure -exerted on the cap p in the direction of the arrow A.
I claim:
1. A selective magazine pencil, comprising in combination a rear case, a front case axially dis-' -p1aceab1e and rotatable relatively to said rear case, a sleeve fixed in arid forming with said front case an annular space-and having a pluralityof longitudinal slots, a plurality of lead holders corresponding to'the number of slots in said sleeve and accommodated in said front case in frontof said sleeve, shanks one extending rearwardly from the rear end of each of said holders into said sleeve, end pieces one on the rear end of each of said shanks, knobs projecting laterally outwards from each of said end pieces through one of said slots into said annular space, and a feed rod .fixed in said rear case and extending into said annular space, said rod adapted to be selectively brought into axial alignment with one "of said knobs by relatively turning said cases and on the axial relative displacement of said cases to shift the selected lead holder into operative position through the intermediary of its end piece and shank, means for securely locking said cases inaxially displaced position, and return springs one on each of said shanks and each claim 1, in which the means for locking the cases in their axially displaced position comprise in combination a locking knob on the rear end of the sleeve, a pair of nippers at the rear end of the rear case, claws on said nippers adapted to grip said locking knob at the relative axial displacement of the two cases and secure said cases in their displaced position, inwardly directed protrusions on said nippers, a spring-influenced disengaging element axially shiftable in the rear end of said rear case and adapted to bear against said protrusions to spread said claws to disengage said locking knob, and. a compression spring between said two cases adapted to return said cases into their extended position.
3. A selective magazine pencil as specified in claim 1, in which the means for locking the cases in their mutuallyv axially displaced positions comprise a locking knob on the rear end of the sleeve, a cup fixed in the rear end of the rear case, a tube fitted in the bottom of said cup, a
pair of nippers formed on the front end of said tube and projecting from the bottom of said cup, said nippers comprising claws adapted to grip said locking knob at the relative axial displacement of' said cases and to secure said cases in their displaced position, inwardly projecting protrusions on said nippers, a rod axially guided in said tube, a knob on the front end of said rod adapted on the axial displacement of said rod to bear against said protrusions and spread said nippers to disengage said claws from said knob, and a compression spring between said cases adapted to return said cases into their initial positon on the disengagement of said claws from said knob.
4. A selective magazine pencil as specified in claim 1, in which the means for locking the cases in their mutually axially displaced positions comprise a locking knob on the rear end of the sleeve, a cup fixed in the rear end of the rear case, a tube fitted in the bottom of said cup, a pair of nippers formed on the front end of said tube and projecting from the bottomof said cup, said nippers comprising claws adapted to grip said locking knob at the relative axial displacement of said cases and to' secure said cases in their displaced position, inwardly projecting protrusions on said nippers, a disengaging rod axially guided and locked against rotation in said tube, a screw threaded portion on the rear end of said rod, a cap screwed on said screw threaded portion of the rod and adapted to axially displace said rod, a spring in said tube tending to press said cap in outward direction, a knob on the front end of said rod adapted on the axial displacement of said rod to bear against said protrusions and spread said nippers to disengage said claws from said knob, a compression spring between said cases adapted to return said cases into their initial position on the disengagement of said claws from said knob, and a magazine for spare leads formed by the outer wall of said tube the inner wall of said cup, the outer wall of said cup and the inner wall of said rear case, said cap forming a lid forsaid magazine.
