P. J: McNANY DOOR FASTENER Filed March 28, 1959 INVENTOR Walla/e m 5 ATTORNEYS Patented May 30, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE noon FASTENER Patrick J. McNaney, New York, N. Y. 7
Application March 28, 1939, Serial No. 264,508
3 Claims. (01.292-291) This invention relates to door fasteners and more particularly to a removable device which may be secured to any door and employed in place of, or in addition to, the ordinary door lock.
The device is adapted to be used on doors opening inwardly and is applied to the door in engagement with the door frame and the door to prevent relative movement of them. The device is of such size that it may be readily carried on the person and is easily applied by the tightening of a bolt.
It has heretofore been proposed to provide a door fastener of this type including an arm having a lug on one end to engage the recess usually provided for the latch or looking bolt in the door frame and also including a member adapted to engage the inner face of the door but the devices of this sort heretofore available have been open to one or more objections. In the present invention I provide a device of this character comprising a body portion of substantial cross section and this body portion is provided with a threaded opening for the reception of a bolt which may be adjusted to contact with the face of the door and is further provided with a groove for the reception of an arm which is pivoted to the body portion and provided with a hook on its end adapted to be received in the recess in the door frame. The arrangement of the locking arm in a groove in the body member provides additional strength and prevents accidental displacement of the parts when in operativeposition.
In the accompanying drawing I have shown one embodiment of the invention. In this showing,
- Fig. l is a plan view'bf the apparatus in applied position, a portion of the door and door frame being illustrated; and
Fig. 2 is a transverse, sectional view on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, the reference numeral I designates a door which is mounted on hinges (not shown) in the usual manner-and cooperates with a door frame 2. The door frame is cut out or recessed in the usual manner to provide a shoulder 3 against which the door abuts when in closed position. It is likewise provided with a recess 4 for the reception of a locking bolt or a latch member which recess is generally covered by a plate 5.
The device forming the subject matter of th invention comprises a member 6 which may be of any suitable shape but which is preferably of substantial cross section as shown in Fig. 2. The
any desired angular position with respect to the bolt. The member 6 is also provided with a longitudinal groove l2 extending from its lower face to a point adjacent its upper face and this groove is adapted to receive an arm l3 which is hinged to the member 6 by a screw it. The forward end of the member I3 is provided with a hook or 2.
lug l5 which is adapted to be received in the re-'.
cess 4 when the device is in operativeposition.
In the use of the door fastening device, the hook I5 on the end of arm I3 is placed in the recess 4 with the member 6 swung upwardly aroundv the pivot It. The door is then closed and the member 6 lowered to the position shown in Fig. 1 whereby the arm l3 will be received in the groove 12. The bolt is then tightened until the engaging member it engages the face of the door. The device possesses several advantages over prior constructions provided for this purpose. In the first place, the provision of a. device of substantial cross section permits the bolt 8 to be arranged in a threaded opening extending the entire length of the member 6 and positions the operating head 9 of the bolt at a point in the rear of the other portions of the device so that it may be easily tightened without interference by other parts of the device. The provision of the ball and socket connection between the bolt and the engaging member H allows the member l I to adjust itself to irregularities in the surface of the door. When the device is in use, the weight of the member 6 holds the arm I 3 in the groove I2 and prevents displacement by jarring or by an attempt to force the door open.
I claim 1. In a device of the character described, a member having a threaded opening and having a groove substantially parallel to said opening, a threaded bolt mounted in said opening and adapted to engage the face of a door, an arm hinged to the member and arranged in said groove when in operative position, and a hook carried by said arm.
2. In a device of the character described a member having a threaded opening and having a 10 member having a threaded opening and having a groove substantially parallel to said openins. a threaded bolt mounted in said opening, one end of said bolt projecting beyond said member and having a flattened head, the other end of the bolt being adapted to engage the face of the door, an arm hinged to the member and arranged in said groove when in operative position, and a hook carried by said am.
