In Germany September 30, 1937 a 3 Claims. (of. 75-126) The present invention relates to steels intended for the manufacture of high speed machining tools. According to the invention such tools are made of steel alloys which contain from 0.6 to
5 1.0% carbon, from 1.0 to 6.0% chromium, from 1.0 to 6.0% molybdenum, and from 1.0 to 3.0% vanadium, the remainder substantially being iron with the normal impurities.
Steels of a composition as specified hereinbefore l although they contain only small percentages 01 alloying constituents are distinguished by a high efliciency in the chip-removing working of materials and can be equal in this respect even to the high alloy high speed tungsten steels or, under 5 favorable cutting conditions, even be superior to them. The best results are obtained by steels which contain the. above alloying constituents within the following limits: Carbon from 0.6 to 1.0%, chromium from 3.0 to 6.0%, molybdenum 20 from 2.0 to 4.0%, vanadium from 2.0 to 3.0%. So,
invention is even superior to that of a low alloy high speed steel containing 1.35% carbon, 4.27% chromium; 3.25% molybdenum, and 4.69%- vanadium.
The efllciency of the new high speed steels can 5 be increased furtherby an addition of tungsten which amounts at'least to 50% of the molybdenum content and comes within the limits of from 1.0 to 4.0%. Finally, the new-steels may contain,
besides the constituents hereinbefore specified,
up to 10.0% cobalt.
What we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: a
1. High speed steels composed of 0.6-1.0% carbon, 1.0-6.0% chromium, more than 1.0 and less 1 than 5.0% molybdenum, 1.0-3.0% vanadium, remainder substantially all iron with the normal impurities.
2. High speed steels composed of 0.6-1.0% carbon, 3.0-6.0% chromium, 2.0 to 4.0% molybdenum, 2.0-3.0% vanadium, remainder substantially allv iron with the normal impurities.
3. A cutting tool composed of high speed steel consisting of 0.6-1.0% carbon, 1.0-6.0% chromium,
I more than 1.0% and less than 5.0%; molybdenum,
1.0-3.0% vanadium, the remainder substantially all iron with the'normal impurities.
