' A'aisssoi PATENT OFFICE y ooN'rArNEa AND ArPuoA'ron Foa 'COSMETIC WhileI this invention maybeadapted for various-uses it isfparticularlyapplicable'for use in Aconnection with applyinga liquid cosmetic or plicators have heretofore been proposed forv applying `,cosmetics generally; none/oi." therfnv are' Ffm applicators are 'no'tada'pted for holding a sumcient amount of liquid forr easy application and others are so constructed that any excess of liquidorcoloring will tend to run down the appli- 'catorand onto the ngers of the user, or in other waysk are not satisfactory i'or the present pur- Aobjects of. the present invention are to 'n provide an improved receptacle for holding liquid cosmetics withmeans permanently associated ",{thercwith for applying the cosmetic; toprovide an 'applicator for liquids having an elongated absorbent member, a portion of which is adapted to carry a supply oi' the liquid and another vportion being adapted to absorb any excess as the fme'tic; and tov provide such other'novel features liquid 'is being applied; to provide an applicator comprising a bottlegcap having a novel form of rvehicle for receiving and applying a liquid coslandladvantages as rvwill appearmore fully from thefollowing description f In the accompanying drawing illustrating this invention, f Fig. 1 is aside view of my improved device;
" Jig.' 2 is a longitudinal sectional view;
ll'ig.y 3 is an enlarged detail of the'applicator;
vand' rigs. 4, 5 and 6 are details of the swab por tion or absorbent vehicle i'or applying the liquid. While my improved container may be made in ,W desired size it is shown'in the drawing on a somewhat enlarged scale for convenience in illustration. It comprises a container orbottle 7 of kany suitable material having a threaded neck for ascrew cap 4I. The cap has a downwardly l'and'inwardly extending hollow projection I lforreceiving and supporting the swab or appliy catormember proper Il. `This member ls ci' the Dirtlcular construction shown and is made from .a twisted wire I I having brush-like or absorbent material such as cotton or other absorbent tlbres I!k interwoven with the strands and supported thereby. y'I'he wire vIl is formed of suitable matend.. as for instance Monel metal, which will f' resist or not be affected by the liquid rouge or other material which is to be used. This comlpolite rod as shown in Fig. 4 is doubled or bent l arebrought close together as shown in Figures 5and6 so that it has the appearanceiof a single stick or rod of absorbent material. The ends are ypreferably bent back` for a short distance as shown at I4 to provide a substantial fastening portion for securing the same to the cap. This endis inserted in the hollow projection 9 as shown particularly in Figure 3 and iits closely therein but is further held in position by any suitable cement or adhesive. This fastening is particularly effective as the adhesive adheres to the absorbent material of the applicator i2 and unites the same securely to the inner walls of the projection.
When the applicator is in normal position in the liquid and not in use, the lower end of the swab portion i0 will extend down into the liquid as shown in Figure l and the upper end of the 1 n the cap or onto the fingers of the user.
When the applicator is to be used, the twisted wire rod provides flexible springiness combined with enough rigidity so that this applicator can be passed over the varied contours oi' the lips. yielding sufficiently to allow thorough and yet light, comfortable contact with all the surfaces of the lips which it is desired to color.
Between the two parallel elements of this rod grooves or troughs are formed, which retain a portion of the liquid, assisting in distributing it evenly in whatever position the applicator may be held. This is an unique feature and important for the reason that lip color applicators must frequently be held in a position with what is here vdescribed as the lower portion extending upwardly, Thus when the applicator is up-ended, its particular construction retains enough of the liquid on and near the roundedextremity so that convenient and complete application may be made without redipping or replenishing.
The enect of twisting the bre about the spiral-I ly-twisted wire gives avtoothed" or brushlike outward thrust termination or projection to the fibres, resulting in a more softly blended application of the color, especially at the edges of the lips.
From this description it will be seen that I back upon itself -to provide a rounded extremity` and having the ends also bent back upon the adjacent portions to form a holding portion, said holding portion fitting inthe hollow projection .and held therein by an adhesive.
2. The combination with a bottle' having -a threaded neck, of a threaded cap engaging with the neck-:and having a hollow downwardly extending projection, an applicator member comprising a twistedv wire formed' ofk metalzwhich' will be resistanttotl'ieliquidV with which the applicatoris to bev used, said wire having absorbent material incorporated therewith,` the wire being bent at the middle with the branchesv arrangedy parallel and adjacent to each other, the ends of the wire beingr fastenedv in the hollow projection.V
3. An applicator for the purposes set forth, comprising a closure for a receptacle, a carrier vehicle for applying liquid, consisting of a. wire having absorbent fibres secured thereto substantially the full length thereof, the wire being bent back upon itself to provide a generally rounded extremity which is adapted to project down into the liquid to be applied and the free ends of the wire'being' secured to the closure.
4. A "container and applicator for cosmetics, comprising a bottle, aclosure for the bottle havn ing a preformed hollow portion, an applicator memberv made of a section of twisted wire with vabsorbent material bound therein bent back upon itself to provide a rounded extremity and havingy at least one end also bent back upon an adjacent portion to forma holding portion, the free ends of said applicator member iitting into and beingrigidly secured within said hollow portion.
v 5. An applicator member for cosmetic preparations comprising handle means, a twisted wire rod having absorbent material k.extending-y substantially the full length thereof, said rod being bent back upon itself to provide al generally yrounded extremity, and the two free ends of saidv rod being secured in an yopening in said handle'means.'
